Larry Norman satirized the 70's religious pop music on "Streams of White Light" lp, questioning their sincerity as profits in their own time, Hollywood be their name. He covered the Stones "Shine a Light", Leon Russel "Stranger in a Strange Land", Harrisons "My Sweet Lord", Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" etc with a certain sense of irony as a believer.
But he never covered Lou Reed's Jesus though familiar with VU; and that is a complement to Reed.
jesus......christ lou reed needs to retire,im not hating he's the ultimate rock poet but age like with most is slowly catching up. he's getting on 70.
@xlerosx of course you can, being an admirer and and avid fan of his work, i have massive expectations whenever i see him live. he's the reason i picked up a guitar, but maybe im wrong with my opinion, with artists like chuck berry at 84 still jiving.
The strange thing - this show aired opposite Conan's last show so it probably had the lowest rating of any recent Letterman show. An amazing live performance. The album version is ho-hum. The real deal for sure.
Sorry to anyone who liked this but I really thought this was a load of crap, I do like lou reed and the blind boys though,so I'm thinking, why is this so shit?
I agree with you. It's not very good because this a soft, subtle song. On the original album (The Velvet Underground, 1969) it's almost whispered. Here they're just belting it out, and it loses the intrinsic melancholy and beauty of the song. Lou Reed nowadays often seems to do things like that, which are below his standards in my opinion, and I must be one of the biggest fans he's ever had
@kidcalabria I know man like I have transormer and it just is one the best albums ever, don't know much of his new stuff but you should check out the song he did with gorillaz called 'some kind of nature' it's awesome you prob like it
Soul music fans call that squall. Kind of an empassioned rough scream. Wilson Pickett used to do it, James Brown used to do it, Joe Cocker, and sometimes guys from the Temptations did/ do it. It's pretty cool if you ask me.
But yeah it kinda sounds like a system freaking out. Or like when you tried to use dial up internet.
This is fucking terrible. Lou should have died from an overdose and been remembered for how great he was instead of over the top performances with an old guy trying to prove he can still "rock".
Your comment is a stunning understatement..... the "guy in the middle" is the very great Jimmy Carter-Lee, and Lou Reed is most certainly not under rated, he's recognised by anybody who knows anything about music as one of the rocks most seminal and influential figures
racist ignorant pricks, just enjoy the music, leave ur upbringing in the closest man, letterman put em on, whether he believes it or not, he still will put on talent on his show, if u don't like, don't watch it
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
jesus crap is annoying and the guitar riff could have been more imaginative, but the blind guardians over there nice vocals but they r black so whats new 2/5
I been seeing Lou live in 1973 and have see the Blind Boys at least 4-5 times in the past 20 years and this song just went a bid flat for me. My first thought on the opening licks was "Dirty Boulevard"!!!!! but was disappointed with this song selection. That said it's still way better than the crap normally seen on TV.
Yeah siple24. The musical combination of blues, gospel, rock and some just gutsy riffs, these kids got their focus all wrong. They're just plain missing out, I feel so sorry for this techno generation, no real guts. So what if they said Jesus, it could be whatever floats your boat. They have no idea about passion, lust maybe but passion no.
"these kids got their focus all wrong. They're just plain missing out, I feel so sorry for this techno generation, no real guts. So what if they said Jesus, it could be whatever floats your boat. They have no idea about passion, lust maybe but passion no"
Sounds just like the kinda thing that he would say....IMO
A lou reed/mo tucker from 1969. That is the trouble with a lot of internet users today, they are very young, and dispite the fact that they could do some pretty indepth research, with relative ease, ie. google, etc, they seem to be basically apathetic about it. Instead of flinging a knee jerk reaction to the word "jesus", they speak before they think, which can be dangerous.
look, im bright..very bright...though, with regardes to theology, im a total idiot.....so teach me: as far as i know practicing jews don't acknowlege jesus' presence, right...or is it [how] they do?
Then afterward, for the first time I understood the Jews of the Bible who knew God. Before I found Christ the Jews in the Bible perplexed me. For they knew God was real. To me it had been as cultural folklore, but also would have to be a lie as presented, if it were not so.
I found Christ. Now I can understand Moses, David, and all the prophets. They shared in the mystery that the world did not know, and still can not.
WOW....The Blind Boys of Alabama continue to surprise me with their amazing talent. I love that they are game to participate in all genres of music. Rockin it - with Lou Reed!
@frozenchosen Yea, the banner on the bottem is a little annoying. Unfortunately, the AudioPerv version cuts off before the end, so this is the only complete version on YouTube so far.

Maybe if Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber or Adam Lambert did the song, the girls with the negative comments would be happy.
The amount of talent on that stage was staggering. The performance was powerful.
