  • Beautiful........

  • OMFG that burl is beautiful. I absolutely love turning burl... even though ive only had a chance to turn two bowls from it.

  • I had absolutely no interest in woodworking before I saw this video.

  • @MatthewLeisher :) that's awesome glad you liked it.

  • hayden love your videos, very informative. When you knock off the bottom piece with a chisel how do you secure your piece?

  • @bond3737 I wrapped it in a towel and just held onto it.

  • Ido8

  • i'm watching all your videos. i'm not done yet so i might answer the question i have ina future episode. but, something i'm wondering about this particular project. If the bark is on the side like that, it means that you are turning end grain ? or is there something i'm missing there ? if you have any more details to give concerning these natural edges bowls, i'd appreciate. they are so incredible ! MERCI !

  • @bigguix Hi Merci, Yes at two points you are turning end grain.

  • Really enjoyed this video, might just buy myself a turning lathe..

  • I'm amazed the glue holds that

  • How good can this guy really be? He still has all of his fingers! ;-)

  • I want your job. Badly.

  • what exactly does the mix of oil and wax on sandpaper do??? how does that sand any tearing?

  • @gardengirlbc It eliminates the sanding dust. I like a satin finish so I use the wax as my final finish. The wax and oil actually keeps the sand paper clean and dose a much better job than dry.

  • What is that you are putting on your sandpaper???

  • @laverty22 mineral oil and paste wax. 10 parts paste wax and 1 part mineral oil.

  • can you use any kind of wood

  • @rctractorboy Yes but hard wood cuts and finishes much better.

  • Very nice turning...thank you and have a great day : )

  • @sneezie22 Thank you,

  • murmmurmer hollow it out 5:18

  • go ahead and saw it off with your hand!

  • i want the acorn

  • Wow, such natural beauty in the wood, amazing job Carl.

    Anthony

  • @Noobular4 Thank you Anthony,

  • beautiful.

  • very nice work.

  • Thank you,

  • Hello, still enjoying your videos. You use the tools differently than others I have watched and do very nice work so there is more than one way to do things. What is the reason you sand with the mineral oil/paste wax mixture? I always sand and then put on any wax or oil finish after. Thanks.

  • I mostly sand with the mineral oil and wax to cut down on the dust.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • hi, im interested in starting turning, and i find your videos really put over the enjoyment of it. i think ill be getting a lathe ordered this weekend, so my misses and i can start competing with eachother to see who can make the sexiest project. cheers for the instruction. awesome!

  • Good luck with the competition. Would be great to see some pictures of you and your misses projects.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • Very nice!

What is the product that you are finishing it with?

  • Thank you,

It's paste wax and mineral oil.

  • @haydenHD Is it a mixture that you have made up? If so, what is the ratio? Thanks.

  • I mix it ten to one ten parts being the paste wax.

  • Nice video...Well done!

  • Thank you,

  • Stunning grain on that burl, great work!

  • Thanks,

  • Great work as usual Carl. THANKS!

I am having a serious problem finding wood for turning here in Castle Rock and Longview. I found a source for some nice hardwood but nothing over eight quarter. Do you have any suggestions where I might aquire wood at a reasonable cost?

  • Hi Guy,

I found a supplier in Southern Oregon. They have a YouTube channel called Oregonburls. I don't have a price list from them, but I grew up in Southern Oregon and next time I am down visiting family, I will get a price list.

I often get wood off the beach. Maybe we need to take a road trip. We have had some good winter storms and there should be some great wood out there.

    Carl

  • Thanks very good. beautiful

  • Thank you,

  • That was a great turn. I like the size of that bowl. I'm going to start keeping a chainsaw in the car so I can take advantage of the odd downed tree.

  • That's a great idea,

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • I know this sound stupid,

but i noticed that we never seen your wax-pot full.

Do they sell them almost empty? :P

  • I just put the wax and oil in a old can.

  • Hey Carl, I finally subscribed after watching your videos for a few months now. Your videos have taught me pretty much everything i know about turning. Thank you for taking the time to help people like me become a better turner. The maple burl bowl turned out great!! I would love to get my hands on a peace of wood like that!

  • Thanks, glad to help. Turning is a very enjoyable hobby. Let me know if you have any questions.

    Carl

  • awesome stuff

  • Very nice !

  • Thats a work of art Carl. Awesome.

  • Thanks Leonard!

  • great video keep them comeing

  • great video keep them comeing

  • nice job carl

  • Lovely work!

    Best Wishes, Brendan.

  • Thanks Brendan. Are you getting ready for gardening? What is in the greenhouse this year?

  • @haydenHD I've got the greenhouse under way and have loads of flowers and veg sown. I'll be doing a video soon to show where I'm at.

  • were do you get your sandpaper?

  • "klingspor" there on line I use the shop rolls 2" cloth back.

  • that wood is just beautiful! where do you get all of your burls at???

  • Most of it off the beach.

  • Awesome work! and really cool piece of wood! When you hot glue the blank to the waste block how do you get it centered? I've tried several times, but when i put it on it always it is off... and wobbles like hell ;) thanks~TheDecoyDude

  • @TheDecoyDude im not sure how he does it, but a trick i use it i find the rough center, measure the waste block, and use a compass to make a circle about an 1/8" larger then the waste block, then i just eyeball it, and it usually ends up pretty close

  • Thanks Doug, I didn't see your response yes that is how I do it.

  • If I need it centered I will put a circle with my compass on it to center it. I have never had a piece wobble, make sure the glue is good and hot when you put it on the waste block.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • nice work as always, awesome looking burl there

  • Nice work. /Mats

  • Beautiful work Carl!

I just love that maple burls of yours!!! Is that right of the beach?

    Thanks! /Nic.

  • Thanks Nic,

Yes this is a piece off the beach.

    Carl

  • beautiful

hope to show you my first job...

  • Thanks, love to see a video or some pictures.

  • Cool!

  • Nice burl, Carl. I've got a maple burl blank set to make a clock. I need to get a burl cap, so much more possibilities.

  • Nice work Carl. Do you toss your sandpaper after each project ? Gary

  • Yes, I don't usually save it.

  • is that your son at around 7 min?

  • yes!

  • Was that green?? Or was it aged?? If so for how long??

  • it's aged probably 3 or 4 years

  • Very cool, I seem to get some wobble when I use hot glue. Have you ever had that problem ?

  • It might be from not being flat on the waste block.
