I was a Conservative, but really that means nothing now days. Harper has done well on most things but his government is showing cracks. Let me explain 16 Billion on f-35 Fighters, 8 Billion on new prisons, 40 Billion on new ships for our navy. We cannot afford this. I am a fiscal Conservative I would be a social democrat as well and again he fails in this department. I would not install an office of religion in government as well as it would require the gov't to pick a faith to defend. Thx

You are welcome. Even though I am a U.S. citizen, I know that Canada is completely independent from Britain. Statute of Westminster 1931, eliminated the right of the British Parliament to legislate for Canada. The right of appeal to the Privy Council was abolished in 1949, making the Supreme Court of Canada the court of last resort. In 1982, Canada obtained the right to amend the Constitution Act (formerly the British North America Act) without the consent of the British Parliament.

The liberal, ndp, bloc and the greens never really gave Harper much of a chance.. You seen this in the debate, and during the entire election run. But Harper still won because he is what a big part of Canadians want. Why risk a coalition in this time of crisis? The break in parliament till January was a very smart idea. Because who wants to see Stephane Dion as prime minister? Didnt liberal lose most their seats because of him. He is an imbecile, not even able to send a video on time.
Dion has not a great charisma, but he is not imbecile! Who cares about who's gonna be the prime ministre while he'll be handcuffed with the NDP. And as you said, people decided to vote not for what he said, but on how he said it, which is kind of stupid. I mean, the Liberal program wasn't bad at all. If it was an other guy, maybe they would be in power.
You say: The coalition is not a good time because we are in crisis. Well, breaking the parliament is maybe worst! No decisions won't be taken

bissonbenoit, let me ask you a stupid question, as I'm far from being an 'expert' on Quebec politics.
What do you think is the reason why Quebec (at least, the Bloc) talks so much about separating from Canada, but has not done it?
Is it because they don't REALLY want to separate (not hinting, here, just asking because I don't know), or could it be because they don't have enough support of the voters there? Or are there other considerations?
One rap band described the situation: A nation that lives in the closet, while half of it has claustrophobia.
40% of Quebecers will always vote "YES" on a referendum for the separation. Another 40% will always vote "NO", and theres like 20% that are not decided. In 1995, it finished 49.6 (YES) at 50.4 (NO). Documents proved us that Canada Gouvernment allowed more immigrants (or gave nationality) the weeks before the referendum. They also made voting some dead people! We've been fooled!
I appreciate the diversity of your subs Kimchiman, but some with the Liberal leanings should take note that this underhanded typically Liebral attack has done more to dammage confederation than they will ever know. I find it very convienient that less than 6 weeks after an election they cobble together a traitor coalition to oust the PM. Why didn't they declare this plan before the election and let the people decide if it was right?
From a personal standpoint I am now more than ever thinking that it is best that as a foremer Northern BC resident and now proud Albertan that it is time to go our own way and separate. At a time when the west was finally getting a voice they eastern power-brokers kicked me in the teeth and I take that very personaly.Dion/Layton/May have publically stated that they will do all they can to destroy my industry, my livelyhood and my province.
If the rest of Canada believes that we will put up with a government run by the incompetant Dion, the truly scary Layton that will bankrupt everything, and watch as May the enviro wacko is given a seat at the table, they had better give their heads a shake. You cannot believe the backlash that is already happening. Maybe I am a redneck, but I don't think like a Liebral or even want to be around Liebrals. If the rest of Canada wants these traitors then I don't want to be in their Canada.
For those that don't agree with me call me what you want, I don't mind...please keep this in mind: Alberta IS the engine that runs Canada. We are HAVE province and that won't change despite the fact that those with very little concept of how the real world works would like to believe otherwise, call us names (thats healthy expression of your ignorance)...but always remember that 50% +1 works both ways...and we can do very well on our own thank you very much.
Canada must be a true Confederation, so provincial governments could decide what's going on in their province. The differences are too big between us, Quebecers, you Albertans, Ontarians or Newfies. The gvt wants to homogenize every Canadians. Why the fuck you have to be bilingual in BC? There are more Chinese than French people there. Canada's federation truly sucks, in it's not the way we should be governed.
I totally agree but... then you must see what a farce it is for my fate to be decided by a separatist party that doesn't want whats best for my country, the Bloc should not be a national party with voting power in the House of Commons, it should be illegal for them to even be there. Take those seats away and the conservatives did indeed win a majority...not that I care, I am too far gone. I detest Eastern Canadian liberals (the party AND the affliction)... not the Quebecois
Good point. I think that a lot of people, when they hear someone say 'Quebec should just separate and be done with it' think it's because the person saying it dislikes Quebec.
I respect Quebec, and I say that if they want to break off and form their own country, then let them. WHY NOT? Why do so many think that there's something intrinsically WRONG with doing that? So many other countries have formed that way, and we don't hear anyone complaining about THAT.
I wonder if deep down inside, it's because a lot of people secretly think about Canada being the second largest country on the planet, and realize that if Quebec breaks off, then we probably will be moved a couple or more places down the list. Also, it would give a lot more momentum to those of us in the West who would also like to separate from the Eastern capital L Libs.
There are a lot more of us out here than a lot of people want to think about.
People are scared about being a new country. You must know that the poeple is getting older and older, and they want to finish their life without risks. It was proven that if Qubec separates, we wouldn't be in a bad economical situation. In facts, maybe it would go better, because in Quebec, we have to pay twice for services. For example, we pay for the administration of Canada Revenue Agency, and for Revenu Québec.
If you look around the world, the popular tendency is to unification. Here, we can think about the European Union, where countries give some of their sovergnty to a central administration. There are some countries that don't want to allow some nations to have their own country. Tibet in China, the Tchechens in Russia or the Palestinians in Israel. (We can't compare to none of them, but you see the point?).
To finish, Canada's PM have big ego. None of them want to be in power when it'll break.
Well, you must know that the bilinguism was instaured in like 1978 by Trudeau! The Bloc wasn't born yet!!
You must also know that the Bloc is surely representing Quebec, but it doesn't want bad things for Canada. When the conservative said that they wanted to put in jail CHILDREN of 14 years old, this policy wouldn't affect Quebec province, but would have been effective everywhere in Canada. He was against it, and truely fought against it.
I don't understand how Quebecers get hung up on things like the youg offenders act and arts and culture funding like the conservatives are some kind of neanderthal wife beating club. I agree with charging 14yo's with adult sentences for adult crimes, and no those "kids" would not serve the time they are minors in adult prisons, but what is wrong with putting these little bastards in jail? They know exactly what they are doing. I did when I was that age.
And how gullible are Quebecors to take away seats and an almost assured conservative majority over biased CBC reporting that the conservatives were gutting arts and culture? The cuts were miniscule and not enough IMO. Are these the same people supporting the coalition because they say no action was being taken in a time of recession? Looks a little belt tightening to me. Isn't this the same PM that has apologized for everything under the sun and admitted that Quebec society is distinct?
What more do Quecbecers need? This so called scary fascist redneck bully neocon george bush clone with the "hidden" agenda has done more in 4 years than 40 years of Liberal bullshit has ever accomplished and still you punish by voting in the separatists and causing the problem we are in right now. Can you possibly see why so many of us have had enough of this? I truly hope that Quebec gets everything it wants, but once they do the money STOPS.
Are Quebecors sure that the deal the Bloc wants is total separation? From what I have heard they want some crap call sovreignty "association". It means that some sort of federal welfare continues, they still get to use the dollar and the central banking system. I am here to tell you that separation means just that, SEPARATE...gone ...kaput...over. No welfare and you take your share of the debt with you ...good luck.
The Quebecers that voted for the Bloc are not all separatists. They just think that this is the only party that will not backstab us. Sovergnty-association was the debate in 1980. We don't want the help of Canada. I mean, yes, we wanted to keep the same money, and maybe share the army. That's it. How can you pretend that sharing the same money is so called welfaire? And for the army,we would have pay for that. We SEPARATE! And of course we'd take a part of the debt. Man, read a little!
Then I guess you are against democracy! Us, 25% of pop, elected the BLOC. The day one party will have a program that will truely represent us, we will listen. How many are you in Alberta-Sask-Man? Then in your logic, your vote for the conservative shouldn't count, and you are the reason why the conservative are in power! There's no good or wrong party, they all represent the ideas in Canada. The separatist party in Quebec is the result of all the shit you gave to us. Then why would there be one?
C'mon man, the PM said we reckognize the Quebec has a nation... and that's it! It's all fucking bullshit. We're not stupid! When you admit that we are a nation, than there must be some other things that come with it! And you must also know that Harper did that only because he wanted our vote. He's not stupid either. He knows that he needs us to make the majority. In Quebec, the culture is very important. We are the only french people in all America. It's one our the only way to stay alive!
There's two ways of thinking about how to reduce criminality. There's the rehabilation way, and the repressive way. Many Quebecers, and many other in the world, think that putting people in jail at the age of 14 will totally fuck him up. He's gonna meet TRUE criminals. By doing this, we send him at the University of Crime, instead of University of Calgary! He'll get outta jail, and he's going to be a real badass. He won't be able to rehabilitate to the society, and he's going to do other crimes
Murderers should be punished, NOT rehabilitated. I mean capital punishment. If they can't come back, they can't kill anyone else.
The ONLY qualm I have about it is that we all know that from time to time, people are convicted who did not commit the crime. And I don't have an answer for that, except that the courts must be more careful about whom they convict.
THIS GUY IS FULL OF SHIT!!Canada is a parliamentary democracy, and if the opposition can seize power by coalescing to form a majority greater than the TORIES, it is valid! He should have had a clear majority of Tories to stave such move. He only has the BIGGEST party in Parliament, nothing more. And using the BQ as a whipping bag when it's convenient, fckng HYPOCRITE! Your past has come to haunt you Harper. Face the music and step down!!
Also, I want to nuance Harper's words. Not only the so-called ''separatists'' did vote for Bloc Québécois. Bloc Québécois is Quebecers' reponse to the faillite of Meetch. The fact that it is so powerfull, more then a decade after it's creation is an ornament for Canada's democracy and also a proof that ''Quebec's question'' is not finished yet.
Many english canadians attack the Bloc québécois, but a lot less question themselves about the reasons of his influence in today's Québec.
In my opinion, it would be the first time in the canadian's Confederation History that us, Quebecers will have a certain power of decision in the gouvernment of Canada. Not just a Québécois prime minister stabbing Québec in the back and insulting democracy like Trudeau did with the Constitution. But a québécois nationalist party promoting Québec's interests.
The Bloc is working to prove that the Canadian confederation would actually have a chance to work for Quebecers. Somehow cute no ?
I'm pissed against the comments of Harper concerning the Bloc Québécois. We elected this party with a huge majority, and since we are part of Canada, our opinion must count. We, Quebecers, are the quarter of the population. If you don't want to deal with us, let us have our own contry. Stop fucking organizing some dumbshit manifestations to say you want us to stay in your Canada and don't ingerate in Quebec's politics when there is a referendum. Separatisme will remain forever
I don't see why people think it's somehow 'wrong' for Quebec to separate. I have nothing against it. And it's not because I don't 'like' Quebec. It is because people have a God given right to decide how to run their own affairs.
I'm of the opinion that if Quebec separates from Canada, it will be better for both new nations, and will probably promote much cooperation between them
Your comment is bang on the mark! There are too many hypocritical games being played by our governments.
I never saw that referendum manifesto and I sure didn't sign it, you are confusing real Canadians that have grown tired of this "Question" and wish your province (country) the best of luck on its own, with Liebrals that want to maintain the status quo to keep their power base and reason for existence. Divide and conquer politics was the only way the natural ruling party was able to hold power for so long
For the interest of Canada, the NDP and Libberals coalition would be a good thing for the democracy. How can you pretend that your have legitimicy when you only got 38% of the ballots? Numerous countries have a coalition the rules on them. You can see it in Germany, in Australia and also in Ukrain.
That other countries have coalition governments does not make the principal right or fair for the people who live in those countries; it also does not mean that we should follow them.
There should be no provision in our constitution for such a practice without it being put to the people to decide. The government is (in theory at least) supposed to be accountable to US. But in this case, they can skirt around answering directly to us by forming a coalition.
They say, "Oh, but we DID put it to the people. They voted us (NDP and Libs) into so many seats collectively!" But the fact of the matter is that we did NOT vote for them collectively; we voted for each party on its own merits, or lack thereof.
It is very telling that so many of the people I've heard calling into talk radio in the past couple of days have been Liberals who, because of Dion's power grab, have said angrily "I will NEVER vote for them again! I am a Liberal, and I did NOT vote for this coalition!"
That THEY are saying such things really speaks to the wrongness of such a coalition (whether it's with the Cons, Libs, NDP, or whoever else)
I don't understand the Liberals that are against this coalition. For the first time, Dion decided to have some leadership and he stood against the Torys. If the coalition finally works, it's gonna be a big plus for the Liberal party.
Considering the fact that NDP and the Liberal party are quite the same, and that the Bloc and the Greens are clearly more about center-left, we must agree that 62% of the population didn't want of a center-right gvnmt. At the debate, we have seen the four party against Harper, and we've seen that all of them had many points in common. (Seriously is there any difference between NDP and the Liberal party?). The coalition will be a mixture of all the center-left ideas.
I'm reminded how Harper has used the Bloc for his own political gain against the opposition, especially the Liberal Party. Four years ago, Harper tried to form a coalition with the NDP and the Bloc against Paul Martin's Liberal Party, so I don't know what he's whining about. Schmuck!
You are absolutely correct. When Michaelle Jean turns down Harper's request to prorogue parliament or call an election, he will have no choice but to resign from leadership of the Conservative Party.
I was a Conservative, but really that means nothing now days. Harper has done well on most things but his government is showing cracks. How very, very few people seem to know that - especially the politicians and so called 'news' people.
Similar problem with the USA; they have a constitutional republic, and NOT a democracy. But you'd never know it to hear their leaders tell it.
Thanks for the comment.

N'est pas?
kimchiman1000 3 years ago
I wonder if deep down inside, it's because a lot of people secretly think about Canada being the second largest country on the planet, and realize that if Quebec breaks off, then we probably will be moved a couple or more places down the list. Also, it would give a lot more momentum to those of us in the West who would also like to separate from the Eastern capital L Libs.
There are a lot more of us out here than a lot of people want to think about.
kimchiman1000 3 years ago

None of them want to be in power when it'll break.
bissonbenoit 3 years ago
Well, you must know that the bilinguism was instaured in like 1978 by Trudeau! The Bloc wasn't born yet!!
You must also know that the Bloc is surely representing Quebec, but it doesn't want bad things for Canada. When the conservative said that they wanted to put in jail CHILDREN of 14 years old, this policy wouldn't affect Quebec province, but would have been effective everywhere in Canada. He was against it, and truely fought against it.
bissonbenoit 3 years ago
I don't understand how Quebecers get hung up on things like the youg offenders act and arts and culture funding like the conservatives are some kind of neanderthal wife beating club. I agree with charging 14yo's with adult sentences for adult crimes, and no those "kids" would not serve the time they are minors in adult prisons, but what is wrong with putting these little bastards in jail? They know exactly what they are doing. I did when I was that age.

(con't)

No welfare and you take your share of the debt with you ...good luck.
woofybigj 3 years ago
The Quebecers that voted for the Bloc are not all separatists. They just think that this is the only party that will not backstab us. Sovergnty-association was the debate in 1980. We don't want the help of Canada. I mean, yes, we wanted to keep the same money, and maybe share the army. That's it. How can you pretend that sharing the same money is so called welfaire? And for the army,we would have pay for that. We SEPARATE! And of course we'd take a part of the debt. Man, read a little!
bissonbenoit 3 years ago
Then I guess you are against democracy! Us, 25% of pop, elected the BLOC. The day one party will have a program that will truely represent us, we will listen. How many are you in Alberta-Sask-Man? Then in your logic, your vote for the conservative shouldn't count, and you are the reason why the conservative are in power! There's no good or wrong party, they all represent the ideas in Canada. The separatist party in Quebec is the result of all the shit you gave to us. Then why would there be one?
bissonbenoit 3 years ago
C'mon man, the PM said we reckognize the Quebec has a nation... and that's it! It's all fucking bullshit. We're not stupid! When you admit that we are a nation, than there must be some other things that come with it! And you must also know that Harper did that only because he wanted our vote. He's not stupid either. He knows that he needs us to make the majority. In Quebec, the culture is very important. We are the only french people in all America. It's one our the only way to stay alive!
bissonbenoit 3 years ago
There's two ways of thinking about how to reduce criminality. There's the rehabilation way, and the repressive way. Many Quebecers, and many other in the world, think that putting people in jail at the age of 14 will totally fuck him up. He's gonna meet TRUE criminals. By doing this, we send him at the University of Crime, instead of University of Calgary! He'll get outta jail, and he's going to be a real badass. He won't be able to rehabilitate to the society, and he's going to do other crimes
bissonbenoit 3 years ago
I say you're both wrong.
Murderers should be punished, NOT rehabilitated. I mean capital punishment. If they can't come back, they can't kill anyone else.
The ONLY qualm I have about it is that we all know that from time to time, people are convicted who did not commit the crime. And I don't have an answer for that, except that the courts must be more careful about whom they convict.

kimchiman1000 3 years ago
Putting a murderer away for 'life' of 25 years, and then out after 5 or 10 for 'good behavior' is not punishment. It is a reward for some of them.

Stephen Harper SHUT UP TRAITOR AND LIAR
Nicholai322 3 years ago
Also, I want to nuance Harper's words. Not only the so-called ''separatists'' did vote for Bloc Québécois. Bloc Québécois is Quebecers' reponse to the faillite of Meetch. The fact that it is so powerfull, more then a decade after it's creation is an ornament for Canada's democracy and also a proof that ''Quebec's question'' is not finished yet.
Many english canadians attack the Bloc québécois, but a lot less question themselves about the reasons of his influence in today's Québec.
CoyoteDis 3 years ago
In my opinion, it would be the first time in the canadian's Confederation History that us, Quebecers will have a certain power of decision in the gouvernment of Canada. Not just a Québécois prime minister stabbing Québec in the back and insulting democracy like Trudeau did with the Constitution. But a québécois nationalist party promoting Québec's interests.
The Bloc is working to prove that the Canadian confederation would actually have a chance to work for Quebecers. Somehow cute no ?
CoyoteDis 3 years ago
I'm pissed against the comments of Harper concerning the Bloc Québécois. We elected this party with a huge majority, and since we are part of Canada, our opinion must count. We, Quebecers, are the quarter of the population. If you don't want to deal with us, let us have our own contry. Stop fucking organizing some dumbshit manifestations to say you want us to stay in your Canada and don't ingerate in Quebec's politics when there is a referendum. Separatisme will remain forever
bissonbenoit 3 years ago
I agree.
There are too many hypocritical games being played by our governments.
kimchiman1000 3 years ago
I never saw that referendum manifesto and I sure didn't sign it, you are confusing real Canadians that have grown tired of this "Question" and wish your province (country) the best of luck on its own, with Liebrals that want to maintain the status quo to keep their power base and reason for existence. Divide and conquer politics was the only way the natural ruling party was able to hold power for so long
woofybigj 3 years ago
For the interest of Canada, the NDP and Libberals coalition would be a good thing for the democracy. How can you pretend that your have legitimicy when you only got 38% of the ballots? Numerous countries have a coalition the rules on them. You can see it in Germany, in Australia and also in Ukrain.
bissonbenoit 3 years ago
That other countries have coalition governments does not make the principal right or fair for the people who live in those countries; it also does not mean that we should follow them.
There should be no provision in our constitution for such a practice without it being put to the people to decide. The government is (in theory at least) supposed to be accountable to US. But in this case, they can skirt around answering directly to us by forming a coalition.

kimchiman1000 3 years ago

Just my thoughts.
kimchiman1000 3 years ago
I don't understand the Liberals that are against this coalition. For the first time, Dion decided to have some leadership and he stood against the Torys. If the coalition finally works, it's gonna be a big plus for the Liberal party.
bissonbenoit 3 years ago
Time will tell. One thing is certain, IF the coalition happens, it will be a very interesting time in Canadian politics.
I hope they don't shoot us all (as a nation) in the foot, though.
kimchiman1000 3 years ago
Considering the fact that NDP and the Liberal party are quite the same, and that the Bloc and the Greens are clearly more about center-left, we must agree that 62% of the population didn't want of a center-right gvnmt. At the debate, we have seen the four party against Harper, and we've seen that all of them had many points in common. (Seriously is there any difference between NDP and the Liberal party?). The coalition will be a mixture of all the center-left ideas.
bissonbenoit 3 years ago
No, there's no real difference; the NDP is probably a bit more to the left, but otherwise they seem to be very similar ideologically.

I'm reminded how Harper has used the Bloc for his own political gain against the opposition, especially the Liberal Party. Four years ago, Harper tried to form a coalition with the NDP and the Bloc against Paul Martin's Liberal Party, so I don't know what he's whining about. Schmuck!
