The Dog was in REM Sleep and when you are in sleep that deep almost anything is possible for humans and animals. He probably stays up all day and when its time for him to sleep he does. the same thing happens to people in the military in boot camp when the stay up all day and they get time to sleep they fall into a deep REM Sleep and reenact what happened that day in their sleep.
