  • When i was in 8th grade Debbie Rice in my class brought her brother from that band to school. I Hawthorne Ca.

  • So sad, that the group had't a good PR. Very good songs. Yesterday one of the Moskow radio stationes have got an interview with mr. Rhodes.

  • Badfinger....Beatles......and this band....you thing they were all on the same page?

  • it's the sweetles!

  • Comment removed

  • I recall all these songs but never realized the same band di them all!

  • The lead singer looks like the guy who played "Cotton" in the 1970's movie "Bless the Beasts and Children"

  • "Here they are with their big hit.." in Los Angeles and vicinity.

As I said elsewhere. the Bangles stuck up for their local compatriots. Their version of "Live" should have been a hit.

  • I was in a band with Gary Kato, the guy playing lead in the video, he is a really talented song writer, musician and singer.

  • I remember seeing this performance on Hollywood Palace. I was 10 years old, and I thought they were "groovy!"

  • Amazing clip!!!! Emitt Rhodes and Don Knotts!!! 2 American originals!!!

  • great clip! thanks !

he sounds like Lennon one moment then mccartney. What a shame he's unknown.

  • A cross between the Byrds and the Beatles. but hey there are worse things in the world to be influenced by! Emitt Rhodes wrote some great songs tho!

  • Disgusting...a blatent Beatles rip-off at the promotion man's beheast, no doubt. Passion wasted.

  • @rcmp4 - Your a fucking dolt, you should recuse yourself from ever commenting

on anything beyond your beloved fucking Beatles. Go to hell.

  • god just came up on this. I dated rick dey in 68 . just very haunting

  • WOW// They should have been bigger, but what a sound!

  • This is an awesome song! How did it not chart?

  • so' fighi quasi quanto i fab 4! ahhahaha

  • this music sucks ... never heard of them and i grew up in this era

  • @tahdahhhhh Aren't you the typical Eagles fan... you're one to talk with your crappy taste in music.

  • Emitt Rhodes!

  • @pooroldKawliga

    The one and only!!! :D

  • I saw this group in Hollywood on my first group. They were pretty good. Afterward, I took my date out to dinner, the waitress called me honey, and I lost the girl. Oh well. Thanks for the posting anyway!

  • @crowmac49

    Great little anecdote.

Funny how little things can turn your cup over and spill everything on the floor.

  • Vancouver hockey heaven...who will win gold...you Canucks win enough time for the USA...Russia, Sweden, Finland great teams....& let's hear for us Gretzky less LA KINGS fans we have a kick ass young team that might win us a CUP soon!!!!???? We r ther most loyal losing fans in sports...sorry Cubs fans.

  • About hockey askybottom, Vancouver downtown is getting all decked out for the winter olympics, we've got the new canada line up and running in september, so tourists flying in can get from the airport to downtown Vancouver by Skytrian/subtrain in a half hour or less. I like this song and I play it 2 or 3 times a week, thanks for posting.

  • CORRECTION......winter of 1967...my mistake...remember you lovely northern folks were behind music times in La La land...I used to hang out @ the best LA AM station/KRLA & saw these guys in the lobby. At least u had it in the top 40......Thanks for Ice Hockey...my second fav behind music!

  • @askysbottom KHJ and KFWB weren't bad either. at least before they became all news stations. long live The Real Don Steele!!

  • Correction...The year was 1968! It was a minor hit here in Vancouver Canada, peaking just inside the top 20 in May&June here locally. Never heard it as a flashback and never forgotten it either. Thanks for posting a classic as well as a #1 in my books,

  • 1966!`oh we the lucky ones to hear great tunes by bands that never got enough airplay~great to say the competition was intense.....

  • I remember catching this on the tube after taking my girlfriend to see Herman's Hermits at Steel Pier in Atlantic City. This Merry Go Round performance was the highlight of that day. I even recorded a version of "Listen,Listen" with my band in 1990. Still have my programme from the Hermits concert dated Aug.17,1968, so I'm guessing I saw a rerun of the Palace that night.Still have my promo 45 of "Listen,Listen" on white A&M label.

  • Never heard of this group - but there's definitely a very strong Beatles influence here!

  • It's amazing how good they sound without even having their guitars plugged in!

  • @robotswan

And there is even a guy who has to change guitars in between songs ;)

  • Listen, this was a minor hit here in vancouver canada, finding its way just inside the top 40 back in '68. I only heard it a few times and never again as a flashback. It definetly didn't get the recognition it deserved! It's an easy to follow song, the lyrics simply stating you to listen...as the band begins to play because there is nothing you can say or do. It;s in a catagory of it's own (bubblegum) and I missed hearing it but had never forgotten it. Thankyou for sharing this classic.

  • I love this. They were a great band. And hey, Mr. Furley too!:)

  • Fierce competition, Merry Go Round, Left Banke, The Cowsills, The Clingers, and so on...wow!

  • Yikes-thought the singer was a woman. First time seeing this also.

  • You didn't have an intelligent comment about the music only a smart-ass comment about Emmitt Rhodes who is the genius that you'll never be. Hence, another thumbs down for you!

  • Is everything going all right in your life? They have medication for your issues.

  • Medication. Pffft... giving advice you rambling attention seeking mind fuck? Please. Now, you're just proving you are a troll and nothing more, Cravenbastard.

  • Actually, Robin McNamara was a MAN, Khultan. He started his singing career in the Broadway musical "Hair".

  • @Khultan Whoa, "Fuck you, you troll".

It always gets me when Youtubers wail on each other as if differences in musical taste are life and death matters, major moral questions.

I kind of see your two points, but, man, do you have to lay on the personal abuse so thick?

  • @written12 Well, I probably could have not brought it to that level and I regret that. GM is still full of himself. Or herself.

  • @Khultan,,

No,Robin NcNamara was a MAN. You are actually the first person I have heard of who thinks he was a woman, and the first person I'm aware of who thinks that Emitt sounds like a woman too.lol.

  • Ssshhh Khultan, I cant hear the woman on stage sing.

  • LUVS

  • I dig the sound. The Merry-Go-Round had alot of air play on the local AM radio stations in L.A. They were one of the many groups who tried to take advantage of the "British Invasion" by trying to sound British. Emitt Rhodes actually went to Hawthorne High School in Hawthorne, CA. The same high school as the Beach Boys.

  • I wanna hear Don Knotts sing.

  • Emitt is a Great songwriter.Love all of his music.

  • difficuLt, that is.

  • Emitt liked the Bangles' cover (as do I), but, if he is to be believed (which can sometime be difficut), he hasn't received royalties for it.

  • Actually, he did receive a royalty. Susannah Hoffs, the divine one. gave him a kiss on the check. Payment enough, right?

I'm just kidding here, engaging in a bit of whimsy.

  • @written12 - Hmmm - seems insufficient, but, then, I'd rather be kissed by Emitt Rhodes. :)

  • In response to the -1'ing of my comment, if you've ever read an interview with Emitt, his grasp of reality and truth as generally understood can be a bit slippery. He's still a genius.

  • @Timmybear,

He wasn't lying. I knew the man who authorized its use and the guy was an absolute crook who also authorized the use of Emitt's "Lullaby" without Emitt's knowledge for the film "The Royal Tenenbaums". He got HIS share of the royalties but Emitt got nothing..until I saw the movie and alerted Emitt of its use in the film. I called the jerk at his office and confronted him about all this, then encouraged Emitt to take the matter to court. It was finally settled, but it was complicated.

  • @Babyhowdy233 - How reassuring and depressing at the same time. Thanks for the info. :)

  • Wow!! Very nice sound!! I like it!! yes! ^____^

  • Still one of my FAVE groups !!!!

  • 'Live' was one of my favs as a very young girl...couldn't believe it when I actually FOUND a clip of it!!! Life is good!!!

  • Wow! These songs sound so very much like what I was writing back in those days.

  • where on earth did you find this? AMAZING!

  • Just found it floating around on the internet a while back....ya it is good stuff.

  • tremendous!!

  • I love Emmitt Rhodes. I think he never made it as big as he should have due to the fact that he sounded alot like The Beatles.....

Trying so hard to get two of his albums that I used to have......very difficult...

    Thanks for posting.

  • I Never heard this group or lead singer before.Really good stuff. Surprised they were not bigger.A lot of Paul Mccarthney in that guy.

  • Emitt is a musical genius, imho...Pity he never got as big as he deserved!

  • I've always enjoyed his voice and sound..

  • You have good taste! ;))

  • I Love Them! They Should Have Done More Songs.

  • It's cool to see them. Listen Listen sounds a lot like they were trying to do a Sgt Pepper.

  • I have been looking for these guys for a while now, never heard of the song listen though.

  • The Bangles did a remake of this song early in their careers.

Michael Quercio of the Three O'Clock reminds me of these dudes.

    Cheers.

  • Thanks for posting this. One of the best groups of the 60's IMO.

  • Is there a vid for the song "live" anywhere on here?

  • Check out The E-types version of "Live" They recorded it in 1966, several months before the Merry Go Round released it. (1967)

    Just click on etypebob.

  • Just awesome, i love his voice :)

  • Nice hair!

  • Emitt Rhodes and Joel Larson to be interviewed by Tony Blass on KCLA-FM 99.3 Los Angeles this Saturday 4/5 at 8 PM PST. Available live streaming at 993kclafm dot com.

  • Thanks for posting! Love it!

  • he was cool and good!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "Live" is one of my all time favorite songs. "Listen, Listen" is fantastic. Thanks for posting this very rare clip!

  • This is awesome. Never expected to see anything of them in here.

  • Hi,First off I am just a fan. I read emitt is in the phone book in hawthorne california, SOOOOO I called, he said he is working on a new album, he's gifted and I hope all the fans give him a chance and support his new effort! Tom in RI

  • Emmitt Rhodes. That's a sad story. He could've been the next great songwriter. He used to record and play all his songs himself.

  • these guys could really groove, look at the way they swing when they sing "listen (cha!) listen (cha!)", its great

  • The Merry-Go_Round was another good band that were victims of bad management and internal frictions within the group mainly connected with not making the kind of money that greedy record companies promised. Emitt Rhodes is and was a genius on the level of the greats of his time.

  • I hear bits of the Sergeant Pepper melody in this.

  • Do you have Time Will Show the Wiser by this group?

  • I would like to that one too!

  • Never heard of this group; they're good

  • Yes, he may be a prick but he sure can bubblegum the blues.

  • I wanted hear more of their version of "Live" I've heard the Bangles version and wanted to hear the original.

  • Love these guys - Emmitt Rhodes, we need to see more of him!! Thanks -

  • i love this song.

  • Love The Merry Go Round,my favorite song of theirs is Time Will Show The Wiser, can you post it? The band is philosophical. Time Will Show The Wiser will cure any girl leaving you. Love the band.

  • love the song, favorite singer, he is a babe, and can rock.

  • Emitt is one of my all time heroes, and a huge influence on my own music. This is a fantastic video.

  • Wow! Joel Larson when he was thin!

  • In regard to the person who said Emitt was a bit of a prick - well, guess what, he is even a bigger prick now! "Wrapped up in a ball and trapped within 4 walls - and a very lovely woman, I'm told

  • WOW Thanks for the memories !!!! That's "T-time" !!! (T-Time is Emitt backwards if you were one of his fans way back then like me !) What a great piece of my past. Emitt is amazingly talented but he was the victim of record contracts. What a sad loss for the music world.

  • Pop genius

  • emitt rhodes = genius

  • excellent! thanks a lot for uploading this one...seen it once before but could not find it again...doh!

i disagree with fletch1950, this is a great Merry go Round clip! fair enough, i don't like medleys (especially if it's not live) but still you get to hear their 2 better known (and best?) songs plus the fantastic Listen Listen in its entirity,by far my fave song by the band! COOL!

  • Emmit Rhodes produces people he likes out there on the scene. He produced a track for my friend who was a female paisly-dressed, Beatles fanatic out here in L.A.

  • Speaking of Female Paisly, didn't The Bangles cover "Live" on their first album?

  • I think the Bangles just liked the song. David Kahne gets all the producing credits on the Bangles second record with "Live" on it.

  • I've never heard of MGR. They seem to have been a very talented group. What ever happen to them?

  • Don Knotts was cool, he made fun of himself as being out of place... how many others would have done that?

  • Merry Go Round was a great, if short-lived group, but this chopped-up video just doesn't cut it.

  • Funny thing about Emitt Rhodes, I've read he was really a bit of a prick, and I guess squandered his talents on booze and drugs, but don't believe everything you read. The MGR Lp is really good, as are his solo Lps. Now if you really are a geek, try finding his Palace Guard 45s!!

  • I was lucky and found a copy of "Like Falling Sugar" by the Palace Guard, on Orange Empire records. Does anybody

know if Don Grady of My Three Sons was in that group?

  • Don Grady was drummer in The Yellow Balloon.

  • I also found a copy of "Like Falling Sugar" with Emitt Rhode's autograph onit. Rock on.. Don Grady was in The Yellow balloon.

  • And mine also. I have his albums on cd and still play and enjoy them more than 30 years on.

  • Emitt Rhodes = my hero

  • I don't see my comment so I'll try again. I said this is cool 'cus although I didn't know the MGR, I LOVE Emitt Rhodes in his sole period. He has some excellent stuff. Check him out.

  • This is so cool. I never knew MGR, but I LOVE Emitt Rhodes in his solo period. If you haven't heard his stuff I highly recommend you give it a listen.

  • According to TV.com, this was broadcast on 3/16/1968

  • Nice. Thanks for letting us see

  • good band! the Bangles did a nice cover of "Live".

  • Very surrealistic seeing Don Knotts introduce the group but they sound great! and Emitt Rhodes (lead singer) has some awesome solo albums out too. They are kinda' hard to find. Plus he sounds a little like McCartney too! (which doesn't hurt)

  • No freakin' way! I just heard my first Merry-Go-Round song yesterday, "Live," the one they start out with. Their songs are so awesome but the whole stage presence is a bit lame. Too much bopping around on the beats of the songs!

  • A kinda odd medley of their best songs. I've never seen the MGR in action before, so this is much appreciated. Thanks! A very underrated band
