lets not forget you don't have the luxury of production work on a tour. I have seen Van Halen a dozen or so times, all were Sammy shows except the VHIII tour with Cherone. I am a biased Sam fan, however have even seen him not be able to hit the high stuff at some of the Balance shows. Either way, he always does give it his all.
Yeah, Balance was the first tour where they tuned down half a step during Sammy's run. Hard to believe Sam was nearly 50 in this vid, he looks 15 years his junior.
i love it how sammy has mike sing some of the verses. it shows that sammy knows how important EVERY member of van halen is. hes not full of it or anything. and if you watch a lot of the videos, he always says how great of a guitarist eddie is and he talks about al a lot too. rock on, van hagar!!!
Honestly? The reason Mike is singing those parts is because at this point, Sammy was starting to not be able to hit the high notes as easily (you can tell as he tries to sing with Mike, but can't as easily as he used to). Also, a few songs from this tour were tuned down a half step, for the same reason being that Sammy couldn't hit the high notes (even songs from the Balance, which they JUST recorded and are on tour for).
How many other 48 year olds could hit such high notes? Plus it could've been a shitty night for him. He only did those high notes 4 years prior but 4 years of touring and recording can put strain on your voice.
@bassistguy - Still not bad for being like 50 at the time. Hagar's voice has definitely aged though, his newer solo stuff is a lot more scratchy than say the 5150 days, but hey that was 20+yrs ago.
Sammy for me is the best Van Halen had ever been, tho this recording is bad they were awesome in concert when I seen them...i am not a dave fan, and that is even my time frame..call me stupid and i am sure many of you will...lol
@AeroZach1029 I saw them on this tour, and if I remember correctly Ed used the 5150 combo, which had just been released at that point. It looked like he had a bunch of them on stage.
i love you!....my son who is due any minute is already named jesse michael!!....and my other son is named julian halen, named after you know who!!!....we miss you MA...

@CDenic
Its the clean amp and the "in between position" on the pickup switch!
2368CHRIS 1 year ago
@CDenic He's also using a harmonizer, and he uses chorus on almost everything he plays dirty or clean, at some minor level.

Eddie wrote this song, made sweet Van Halen love to it, made it know who owned it, and then they put it on the album.

His tone this tour was absolutely phenomenal. Their best tour since Fair Warning in 1981 and nothing has matched this one since...
