  • The vibraphones-what you hear in every elevator.

  • Somehow this reminded me of the old bewitched intro

  • i quit band freshman year of high school, but man do i miss playing the xylo, marimba, and the vibraphone. it was what i was best at in the percussion section and my teach almost always had me on the marimba

  • vibraphones are cozy

  • Cool :)

  • Would you happen to know what mallets those are? I like the sound of them. :)

  • EXCELLENT!!!!!! Keep it going, try Tenderly, East of the sun,September in the rain. You sound great!!!!

  • Whao dude. You move your elbows when you play. That's not proper technique! It's all in da wrists, man! :)

  • Well played! Nice to see the operation of the dampner in this video too! Thanks for sharing

  • hmvrios 1 you're right about not driving it, but playing for the emotion and message in the ballad, but like you I think it was a good choice for the vibraphone if played with a little more passion - and yes those softer mallets too.

  • very nice man, if i may may suggest something, take it a lot slower, its a ballad. play it with ballad emotion, not as moving and driving. also, because it is a ballad, and you play in the bottom part of the instrument for most of the thing, use a softer mallet to get a warmer tone out of the instrument. too much impact on almost every hit and the high notes get kinda obnoxious at times. however I really like this piece and the overall idea of it.

  • @hmvrios1

you can play the song many different styles, it doesnt have to be a ballad. the band i play in (drum set) plays this as a soft swing or even one time we played as a bossa nova. its an easy song to learn and easier to make it sound good, but im at my best i could be on this song, but im pretty good for a 13 year old

  • ootkos suomesta?

  • Nice.

  • hey our jazz ensemble played this for our winter concert.

the ensemble vibe part isn't as interesting...

  • Why do I feel myself standing in an old fashioned elevator?

  • Thank you、nice music.I heard 3 times,

  • lol...i've been playing for a year and i haven't learned four mallets yet..wow....

  • the way you jumped around made me laugh.

  • try brining your mallets down. Don't let them lift so much. Relax more. a lot more. You'll get it.

  • wow that's amazing

  • nice!

  • VERY nice.

  • Excelent, that was very nice

  • excelente!!

  • were can i get that music from?

  • flippin amazing people like u great musicains are what inspired me to be in band

  • You are amazing!

  • for just "dabbling" at this instrument, you are very good at it!

  • Dude, where'd you get your vibes? The problem with playing percussion is that you can't afford an instrument... and so they're hard to come by... :( But well played anyhow!

  • Nice work. I've been looking for a piece similar to this one.

One suggestion, though. Use softer mallets. I typically use Medium Vibe mallets. Whatever size you're using, it sounds a bit clunky.

I also noticed that your playing style is just a bit too wild. I understand that you're getting into the groove of the song (this is very apparent), but I would play it with a slightly more relaxed style.

Once again, good job, and keep up the good work. I'd like to see some more!

  • Good stuff, man! you can make the vibs swing. Keep it up!

  • Reminds me of George Shearing. He plays the piano though. Do one of his band members play a vibraphone?

  • This is fantastic!!!

  • smooooooooooooooooooooooooooooth

  • that was remarkable. thank you. I am a Santur player but I love to learn mallet percussion someday (play 4 notes at once, chromaticism)

  • I don't like it... And stop jump!

  • What a boorish comment....if you don't care for the interpretation, respect the effort. MusicApprec 101.

  • Sounds like you hit all of the right notes, and your technique was pretty good, but I would have liked to hear some dynamics. Other than that, very good!

  • that is so kool. you r so kool howed you play the vibraphon

  • you are COOL

  • You rock, man!

  • Sounds like something you would hear in a 1930s movie background. (Not saying it's anything bad) Who agrees that the vibraphone is one of the best sounding instruments on Earth?

  • @DeltaPhi79: I agree!

  • @DeltaPhi79

all he needed was a double bass, a comping piano, a jazz (brass) combo and a drummer. THEN he would sound awesome!!!

  • @DeltaPhi79 WORD!

  • @DeltaPhi79 One of my favorites. It pisses me off when people call it a xylophone! haha

  • whats up fellow U of U student

  • hello, who might you be?

  • @geekusadrummer I'm your favorite tenor player of all time. No, I'm not Clint....

  • @frizzzzzzal

    Hi Andrew G!

  • What a Fucking Badass!

  • Cool das Video

  • Comment removed

  • nice!

  • Those are really hard mallets, i personally like using 186's for more dynamic contrast... good job though:)

  • love this very much..why i have the feeling,i must run in a fifties milk bar and sipping a milkshake?!;D

  • damn ........

  • i like this piece a lot. where'd you get the sheet music for it?? or did you just use another transcription?

  • I used the lead sheet out of the Real Book

  • cool! thanks :)

  • wow thats a really nice vibraphone, you can see your reflection that its so shiny

  • lovely style and interpretation! loved it ;) Just a question, is your rhythm improv?

  • Thanks! Improv indeed I suppose.

  • Nice but needs some kind of shaping and feeling.

  • Wow , That was really good(: I had to play Autumn Leaves too , But I wasnt nearly as good as you. Haha.

  • oh shewt, LOL!!!!

i was watching this and i just noticed this comment, and i was like, WAIT A MIN...

  • very nice......^-^

  • Awesome...don't ever stop playing

  • wow, that was nice! Hope to be that good one day.

  • Nice. Interesting technique with the emphasized lift.

  • fantastic

  • my school got gold vibes. The only bad thing is that im graduatiing in three days

  • Good on ya!

  • very nice jazz vibes!! you've got such expression!

  • fun ^_^

  • hey cool I am currently studying percussion with one of the best teachers in my country. I do like the Vibraphone, but i like to jam on the Marimba. gipsy jazz sounds insane on the marimba. keep it up

  • Are there any Gipsy Jazz Marimba videos that you've seen on youtube? I would like to see that.

  • not really. I usually jam with my friends but never really cared much about filming anything. But as soon as something comes up you'll be the first one to know. cheers

  • Nice playing, I have not really played vibes much at all but they are fun and they have a really cool sound.

  • In some parts of the music especially when you hold chords a bit longer play in tremolo both hands altenately as if you are playing a marimba. The expression will be gratly enhanced but not too longer coz the sustain of the vibes are much longer than the marimba's. Try it, thanks.

  • Just a little suggestion man, if vibrato is truly needed, you can tremulate the chords a little while the sustain pedal is down but not too long. Well unless they bring back the vibrato motor. hehehehe

  • How do I tremulate my chords? thanks!

  • I will suggest that you add a small vibrato to that ditty. It will add the expression too. thanks for posting.

  • Ahh that would have been sweet man! Unfortunately they took the vibrato motors off the vibes for some reason.

  • That was bad ass.

  • You are a great artist. One I classify as keeping the melody here and not put on a one way train to siberia, Great job

  • nice, i play vibrapahone but not four mallets yet

  • Not bad at all. I can't really tell but are you trying the "Burton Grip" there? Thats an excellent sound for a Yamaha as well. keep it up!

  • why are you make such large up strokes? you are bringing your arms/hands up to your chest.

Its good though, keep working on it.

  • It's no that bad for a person that's only playing vibes for a few months.

I play about 3 years and i see you still got to evolve

  • Good job! You're a natural born musician! Keep on the hard work, but don't forget drums!

  • I want to know which high school music program has a gold bar... Awesome

  • University program actually.

  • Just some constructive criticism, but try to loosen up. Use less arm and more wrist.

    :)

  • Hey Thomas, ignore the criticism here (some of which is ill-informed). Keep studying and playing and enjoying. You did fine work here. I play this tune on my MalletKat, and it sounds a lot like yours! Best wishes.

  • Sounds good. I like how you hit dead center on the bars. Gives a nice sound.

  • there are parts where you could really swing a lot harder

  • Dude, relax.

  • meh.

  • Overall pretty good, the biggest thing you need to work on is relaxing your shoulders. If you notice your arms bounce around a little bit, that's because your shoulders are stiff and is cutting off control of your entire arm. If shoulders are tense then arms will be tense, if arms are tense then your wrist will be stiff and so on to fingers. Watch Gary Burton play and see how relaxed he is. Good job, keep on perfecting it.

  • He isn't playing with Stevens. That is either Burton or Traditional from my understanding of the instrument.

  • Yes, It's not Stephens. I am almost certain, though it is hard to tell, he is using Burton. Burton crosses the outside mallets, traditional crosses the inside, and Stephens (marmimba mostly) doesn't cross either

  • Keep up! You are awesome ! =)

  • U need to learn not to bounce ur arms so much other than that great job!

  • you need to learn to raise your fuckin hand if you're gonna leave dumb comments like that. other then that great job!

  • I was just giving some helpful critique. Stop being an asshole. This isn't a competition

  • I am the Law

  • wtf

  • lol sorry man i dont remember writing that... i was probably in a goofy mood that day. it was a joke. nice critique.

  • Nice steven's grip and not the vibraphone burton grip. but I use it to so too sometimes

  • Hey man That was pretty sweet! :) You did an excellent job!

  • cool :) i like your dance :P

  • Most impressive!

  • lol...cool...is the vibraphone actually yours?...you'd be pretty rich if you just bought a vibraphone after 3 semesters of training...but still thats loads good!

  • Hehe, nope. It's the school's. I wish I were that rich just off being a musician. Someday...

  • really good!

  • WOW! Well done! I can't even begin to imagine playing vibes! It looks so difficult! As a piano player and complete chord geek i would maybe comment that you might try experimenting past the mi7 chords and maybe throw in a few extensions/alterations... (b5, 9, b9, and so on...) nevertheless that was amazing!

  • Oh yeah ! Very good performance.

  • My goodness, that's a pretty vibraphone.

  • si gruoss uajio

  • wow that was kool.

  • lol!!!was that thomas?

  • Who is this? lol

  • very impressive keep up the good work - omg I really want a set of vibes now!!!

  • sounds awesome, i love this song but watch ur technique because you're using a lot of arm motion which can lead to tendonitus try to use mainly wrist

  • Wow that was fantastic! Great Job!

In concert band, I play Clarinet, and have done Mallet percussion as a hobby. This year, however, I'm going to play the Vibes in my school's Jazz Band. I have a small question. Is there any method to pedaling? I know if you don't pedal, the notes blend together and it sounds pretty crappy. I was wondering if you could help me since you're so good. Thanks, and again, Awesome Job!

  • Thanks! I never had any professional training with pedaling...so what I do may be somewhat amateurish. But often I will just pump quarter notes. And sometimes I will hold it down for a few beats if I want to sustain a note for a longer period of time, or if I want to create a 'wash' of sound. That's about all I can offer you! Good luck with jazz vibes!

  • Alright! Thanks! Those tips really helped! We start Jazz Camp on Monday, so I'll try them out! Thanks again! =]

  • Use mallet three to dampen notes that get muddy and bleed into different phrases. Hey you ever thought about playing "All the Things You Are?" It sits really nice on the vibraphone.

  • there's plenty of different ways to dampen, if you don't mind me putting in my two cents. I find it best to just pedal with the phrases. Faster passages usually require minimal pedaling, although it may be done with more chordal movement. Ballad playing is usually done with longer notes, but if your comping (providing chords), use your own discretion. If your improving, try to use the pedal minimaly during the improv or else you and the rythm section will just sound muddy.

  • Are those all your vibraphones? and which model vibes are you using in both of your videos is see ones a musser and other a yamaha

  • Hey. Those are all from the University. The Vibes I am playing are Yamaha 2700. Pretty nice model if I do say so myself.

  • nice job! you sound great for the amount of time you've been playing the instrument. good voicings and 4 mallets. If you want some feedback, I think you should play with softer mallets for a warmer tone, listen to how singers/horn players phrase the melody, and try to feel the time w/o "bouncing your body" and raising the mallets so high off the keyboard. keep up the good work!

  • Hey, thanks for the input! I bought really hard mallets because I was playing in school combos that I had trouble projecting in with softer mallets. I also heard Milt Jackson use something with a bit more bite, which gave me the idea that it was okay to get a stronger attack from the vibes. What are your thoughts regarding all that? Feeling the time would be a great thing for me in many ways...I will bear that in mind for sure!

  • VERY good! I've only had about a month of vibes.

  • he's holding 4 match sticks.. hehe.. nice nice.. i like it ^_^

  • Great job, very cool!

  • You versatile sonofa gun, that was totally goodness. Thanks for the inspiration!!

  • this song i heard in arabic edetion once to a great woman called Faeruiz or something good job dude

  • that was sweet!

  • Oh I love this song! One of my favorites. Sounds great, bro!

  • Wooooo, look at the drummer playing notes!! :-P Awesome, as always!

  • You are doing just fine. You are putting it out there for people to see, that says a lot.

What did you record with?? VHS or digital camcorder?? The sound is clear and crisp.:-)

  • Awesome as always : )

    Congratulations, dude!

  • hahaha thats tight

  • Cool rendition of that song! You really know how to play the vibes!

  • great man!! I really enjoyed it. great playing. i hope I get as good as you on the xylo/marimba/vibra - phone
