  • i wish i could get along withoutttttttt her very well haha this song will help

  • Is that Chet Baker singing?

  • @Jonneh999 exactly :)

  • @Jonneh999 - Yes!

  • @Jonneh999 yes :)

  • spent the day researching 1950`s music and this song just blew my mind! How could I have lived without it for so long! I love Youtube!

  • Tan bello!!!!!!!! Amo Chet Baker.

  • Nice one, Betty.

  • thanks betttyblue for posting this fabulous song!!!!!

  • isn't it ironic that lyricists write words expressing feelings that everyone wishes they could say but can't or don't? study the lyrics of tons of popular songs then imagine speaking some of them, you'd be perceived a jerk, a fool, a weirdo pervert but when those feelings are expressed in lyrics in song, they're acceptable. this demonstrates the power and beauty of music and the vanity and stupidity of man

  • the lyrics really touch me. Describes my situation perfectly again, chet.

  • oh chet baker. i've loved his music for so long, and i now wish i was born in his decade.

  • ♥ awww, these gentle piano clinking... perfectly in line with melancholy voice! love it!!!!

  • What a beautiful song and what a wonderful artist! His unique voice touches me very deeply.

  • He touches some place inside of me that I didn't know was there. What a fabulous artist! So sad that he couldn't take care of himself.

  • @apshaki1 i feel the same of you.

  • hagshor. Your shallow and ill-focused hostility might benefit from some professional counseling. They may even have a pill for it.

  • iceninekills lame name and you just got moded :) why are you arguing anyways on such a beautiful song that has nothing to do with anything your talking about

  • Born in the 90's.

Dreaming of being teenager in the 50's..

  • Chet saw me through some of the darkest time in my life.

He's one of those special few artists that manages to make every word that he sang or note that he played sound like it was especially for you.

  • I wish i had something as beautiful as this to offer the world.

  • I miss my Ex :(

  • @maxrock2009 i feel you. this song brings back so many memories..

  • This track should be part of the Doctors Prescription for Insomnia Patients. One of the most soothing songs.

  • not a singer...always will be a voice to hold bright lights to.and he has chops too!

  • "I should never think of spring/ For that would surely break my heart in two"- Chet tugging at the heartstrings! Lovely song

  • The song itself is actually more than 17 years old...it's been there since the 50's....many people have sang it as time gets old and this song gets old too.

  • Now he holds it . . He knows this treasure . . Above all others: Faith so certain . . Shall never be shaken . . By the heaviest sorrow.

  • The first 10 seconds are to break hearts... And, of course, the rest of this amazing tune. :)

  • Ahhh. I live for the sound of his unheralded voice. And Oh So Copied.....

Nothing compares his Paul Desmond and he romp on the world of standards

  • Chet made me cry. ;_;

  • 17 years old and I love to listen to this.

  • wHAT A great WESTCOAST TALENT HE WAS!

  • love it sooooooo much

  • i'm 19 and i love this music.

i wish i was born way back because then id have a true romance <3

  • @WithLoveFromKay your age shouldnt stop that. love is timeless just like this music. put on some chet or sinatra and spend time with somebody you like. it's been working for a loooong time...trust me!

  • @MrByaeger

    Yeah you're right.

    I gotta think positive!

  • @WithLoveFromKay there you go..just a matter of time, somebody out there looking for you too. good luck!

  • i love him!

  • This song could put anybody at ease.

  • I discovered him a week after he'd played in our local jazzclub and shortly after he past away:( would have loved to see him

  • I agree with dabhal about the space. Knowing how to handle the delicacy of such music is exactly what Miles meant when he said sometimes it is what you don't play that makes a song effectively meaningful. This is lovely and I love Chet's voice as well as his playing. What a musical treasure.

  • Ohhhh. This is absolutely lovely. The music is gorgeous, the lyrics are filled with such heartache, the voice...so smooth. I'm a total sucker for songs like this.

  • I would like to dedicate this song to everyone who prevented this situation from becoming a wos worst case scenario:)

  • Very love and touching.

  • God bless those kids who invented YOUTUBE. Now we can share these experiences. Oh Chet!

  • trumpeters, spaces - Miles was the same, as was Chet in his horn playing. Art Pepper had it too, another ex-junkie...food for thought...

  • meravigliosa....stupenda....l'adoro

  • Wow....melancholy but beautiful. I think everyone has felt like this about someone. Very bittersweet...I like this alot.

  • haha. i guess they were the lucky six!

  • 6 people have never felt true love and lost it

  • @TwoSexyFourMyShirt

    Now is 10.

  • @TwoSexyFourMyShirt i dont want to love anymore..

  • hermoso

  • Great song!! no matter how old are you!! the feeling will touch us always!

  • Does he play the piano in this song?

  • I dont get along without this song very well...

  • I'm very happy today, because I know just 5 persons don't have a heart, this is a small number (:

  • sublime ...:)

  • This is my favorite vocal from Chet, no tears ot tragedy. Just a great performance at the top of his game.

  • Chet Baker just knew how to set the mood......

  • @rienzied and also to kid with it. wonderful!

  • @stelledg yup I had this album about 10 years ago, and used to listen to it with my late father in law.... He was a flawed genuis but his music and mood setting is 2nd to none!

  • i'll always love that song!..............

  • i'll always love that song!

  • So beautiful it makes me cry.

  • Amazinng!

  • i'm not old and i have the same opinion, it's terrific.

  • spike and juliets song :D Cowboy Bebop

  • @actionbastard1er

    Lol.you r right.

  • Comment removed

  • @actionbastard1er you read my mind!

  • i carry your heart with me(i carry it in

my heart)i am never without it(anywhere

i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done

by only me is your doing,my darling)

here is the deepest secret nobody knows

(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud

and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows

higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)

and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

  • i carry your heart with me(i carry it in

my heart)i am never without it(anywhere

i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done

by only me is your doing,my darling)

    i fear

no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want

no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)

and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant

and whatever a sun will always sing is you

  • Hauntingly beautiful and charged with emotion. As someone who recently lost a great love, let me say that this performance really captures all the contradictory feelings associated with moving on from loving someone whose memory and love you can never really leave behind; all those little things that bring old feelings rushing back to the surface.

  • his voice makes me cry

  • listening to chet in winter. and then in summer. and then on the rainy autumn days to come... my hearts keeps breaking but it's oh such a sweet mini-disaster.

  • It could be a love song to Heroin.........

  • I'm a 15 years old guy in Brazil, and I love Chet Baker... hahahaha

    Fantástic! *-*

  • great song forever, life is a very deep pool,if you are real, and not an idiot

  • i learned about chet through T.C.M. BEEN HOOKED EVER SINCE

  • I've just watched Aberdeen with Lena Headey and it's part of the soundtrack !

Great song for a great movie !

  • cool !!!

  • i like more the Nina Simone version

  • I will now assume the fetal position. Jesus, this is heart-breaking.

  • This type of music reveals sensational feelings of privacy with a tasty partner, feeilngs full of love.

  • Amazing phrasing! The whole Chet Baker Sings album has always been one of my favorites.

  • ....i get along without you very well....of course i do.....except...... francoisli...you surely broke my heart in two...sigh!!

  • I listen to Chet Baker Sings almost every night before I go to sleep, never fails to relax me and wash the worries of the day away, no one does it like Chet!!!

  • oh i love this song....and wow..that voice.....chet baker.. u r simply wonderful...

and yes francois..i get along without you very well.....except........u truly broke my heart!!

  • the break up song i can empathise with.... all over again, oh dear

  • Sounds like Mel Torme, the Velvet Fog. Very pleasant.

  • @JanDarjeeling You're right, great observation!

  • What a rare artist Chet Baker was - able to both play the trumpet and sing so divinely.

  • Brilliance. :)

  • Never heard this song before, but it fits perfect to my mood...

  • @Tschitscheringrin check out the album; chet baker sings...its heavenly!!

  • heh i cant top crying haha imma fuckin sap my girlfirend of 5 years left me its been a month since she left an im now missing her because of this song

  • Yeah, Chet Baker will do that to you... hang in there man.

  • It happened the same to me but my girlfriend cheated on me with my best friend and he turned to be gay oO! Still I miss the whore!!! :(

  • Es un Artista..muy bien

  • I adore his voice and the hint of the piano singing w/ him. Just the best.

  • woow...wonderful

  • Absolutely mood turning... that's what a good song will do to you. Fabulous!

  • Chet Baker is an classic jazz artist he will be remembered . Only if jazz can come back to main stream ,but thats wishful thinking. The masses is honesty retarded I blame it on propaganda! Plus the dumding down of the American people and it has worked in perfectly sadly to say.

  • Too true- I grew up in the 50s - 60s when regular folk had a bit of taste & class, or at least knew what beauty was.. dumbed down doesn't begin to describe it- it is sheer horror for a jazz musician like me playing since 1959. Thank goodness I have all my Chet, Paul Desmond, Wes Montgomery, etc, LPs or I'd go crazy.... you are correct in that it won't come back- thank god for Youtube.....blessings my friend.... let's keep the vibe going anyway..... I'm never w/o an extra turntable... ha ha!

  • @Iceninekills19 One. Your grammar is incredibly sub par. Two. You're one of the many dumb Americans, infact you're so utterly stupid I doubt you even realise it. Three. The fact that less than ten percent of your countries population is atheist says something.

  • @hagshor Wow. You are probably horribly lonely, and you should, One - seek counseling. Or Two - buy a shotgun, suck on the barrel and pull the trigger, and get out of this world.

If I were in your shoes, I would have done it yesterday.

  • songs like me know how to humble me...it gives me the feeling in my heart of sadness and ache but it also inspires me to fufill many things in my mind i thought not possible... if artists were like this now adays then maybe it would be a better world

  • fucking nice song!

and those lyrics are just awesome! :D

  • I feel just the way described in this song :'(

I'll be listening this song many times from now on.

    It comforts me =)

  • "I get along without you very well, of course I do;

Except when soft rains fall and drip from leaves, then I recall

The thrill of being sheltered in your arms, of course I do. ... "

    etc etc..

  • wonderful, melancholy, beautiful..

perhaps im old, but i appreciate in music what isn't played,; and in this song there is space ..its not filled with noise just for the sake of filling space...chet brought something intangible to the lyrics and made it, as sadrefuge called it, sublime

  • im not old (18), and i agree with you.

  • @diabhal

Perfectly stated. Today's alleged singers who wander all around the scale singing aahhAHHHahhOOOHHeeeehh because they can't hit a note correctly and have 20 backup singers with 30 dancers on stage with them to cover for the fact that they have no talent.

  • @diabhal Like Count Basie, it's the notes he didn't play that made his arangements perfect. virtuosity isn't always the answer

  • @undapar1 couldn't have said it better myself...

  • @diabhal it's all in the space. that's what John China my good friend and pianist says, that's wisdom. x

  • @diabhal spot on:)

  • @diabhal such lyrics are written because the writer felt he had to say and share his emotions his feelings with others. Now its more this days they write in hurry because they have to have next hit because the last one they wrote is didn't last. They writers of today are a bit like china man factory worker. They write as much they can in hope to hit something while doing it.

  • Sounds a lot like Mel Torme.

  • pure awesomeness. Authentic music. None of that manufactured commercialized crap that people ASSUME is good only because it's PUT in their FACES to listen to...

  • @restlesspride666 I love the way you think

  • Lol Thanks. My generation is pretty guilty of what I am against :/ But you can't blame youth for ignorance right?

  • it would seem that one comes with the other all too often, nevertheless i agree with your post and having just found this video through a link on a nujabes video, i find my self falling in love one again with jazz

  • Jazz just has so much feeling too it, like the blues as well. It isn't in your face though.. and all flashy.. its simple and enjoyable, i could listen to this music on a bicycle ride or car ride and feel so calm and nice.

  • Your comments are very true of this sort of song, but not all Jazz. Dizzy and Maynard are both very flashy.

  • @MichaelnChristine dude just chill. stop trying to skool everyone

  • @restlesspride666 exactly

  • beautiful song.

  • one needs only one word to describe this,

    sublime

  • modern music sucks its always lacking something that old music has.

  • @itsthatsebguy93 not all but most

  • classic...

    true...

    beautiful...

    sad...

  • It's funny, but I usually listen to Chet Baker for his trumpet solos - I like the "humility" in his singing, but if he didn't play trumpet in a song, yawn. But this rendition of the beautiful Alec Wilder song is fantastic. Makes me wonder if his not having to play the horn, where the performance has to rest entirely on his singing, he does better? Worth pondering.

  • You mean Hoagy Carmichael, not Alec Wilder.

  • @JonLawry youre crazy

  • Timeless................

  • There is a documentary of his life that is several years old and recently rereleased limitedly in theaters. It was shot by Herb Ritts. It's great and tragic. Not sure where you can see it these days.

  • Watch the 'Boulevard of the Broken Dreams'-version! It's great!

    youtube/watch?v=P6IpVnBP4S0

  • this song is really me

  • i AM gay! so what?

  • Does anybody know Kurt ELLING's version in his 2001 "Flirtin with twilight" BLUE NOTE's record ? I love it !

  • Kurt Elling isn't that great at all

  • just beautiful. that's all.

  • I love you

  • He is such an inspiration so me. My absolute favorite jazz singer! He's the reason I started playing trumpet.

  • He has the voice of silk bedroom slippers. Never exceeding his range he presents a vivid presentation of the words he is singing.I'm sorry I didn't discover him until after his death but he did leave a treasure of work behind to enjoy.

  • Singers generally fall into two catagories,

those you like and those you dislike. Joe Cocker doesn't have a voice like Pavarotti

but he's got that thing that reaches in and grabs you. Pavarotti can be recognized in nanoseconds like trumpeter Clark Terry. The elements of music are ordered differently for each of these artists in their respective fields and I think they have all mastered what they do. Another thing that comes into play is how much voice do you need to sing any particular piece?

  • If you truly love jazz there is no one "perfect" sound. you listen to listen and that's it. If Chet "hit a cord" with you, he does. If not, move on...it's that simple. No judgement...

  • Of course no judgement. There are choices, like an artist making his pallette.

For thiis painting I'll use this red and this yellow but not blue.Comparing artists is like,I think Rubenstein said, like comparing universes. A friend of mine uses the wonderful phrase"Different kinds of greatness" It took me awhile to get to Chet.He "hit a chord" for sure.

  • Agreed. No more and no less.

  • Chet wasn't the greatest singer in the world, but dammit, when his voice matched the melody, the sentiment, and the arrangement, he KILLED! I can't stop listening to this amazing tune. God rest your troubled beautiful soul, Chet.

  • What makes "greatest singer" if it is not the music that is behind him as well? too much is said today about the singer, and Musicianship is places so bad in the back that people just make 8 bar loops! A GREAT singer hears the music, and Adds his voice to it. Despite them being called accompaniment. you could remove his music and still he would sound nice. Try that with ANY beyonce song. The lack of melody and concern for chord progression, and crazy runs.. You would Never wanna hear that crap!

  • I think he was a great singer but we all have our opinions...:~))))

  • HE IS a great singer! This man is unbelievable. I include him in my presentation when I install internet to my customers!

  • the honnest singer in world !

  • The best example of this I know of is the Sinatra & jobim piece on youtube where Sinatra really hears aned feels the music!!!

  • U sarcastic bugger - i actually just watched/listened 2 that very rendition for about 5 seconds.. As my dad always says - anything's only worth wot some1 will pay 4 it... (It's just unfortunate that only the f****** who have the money make such decisions!) .. Should have guessed by the over-usage of punctuation!!!

  • Talking about punctuation and the like , is that the way English people spell English today ?

  • It's YouTube, mate. Not fucking highschool.

  • Maybe be you didn't go to high school , "mate" .. Whether it was "fucking" , or not , I don't know .

  • @sandydidit Actually the voice represents a different kinda singing. And it's very effective. Chet and Bobby Troup had those kinds of voices that melded well with both lyric and melody. And you know what -- and you won't believe me -- movie star Jane Russell's voice melded well with the dark classic melody. Listen to her sing on YouTube "You'll Know." Thanks a mil for your post!!

  • @sandydidit

    Yeah!!

    God!, that was a beatiful!

  • Lovely, this is the type of music that never gets old. Chet Baker is perfection, vocally and instrumentally!

  • chet baker's voice makes me want to just bawl my eyes out and/or give him a teddy bear or something

  • hello chet...you kill me with this song. it sounds like every single words are meant to recall memories of her...the one was the one and only and still is....

  • such a great song...

it makes me feel kind of sad

  • I prefer chets trumpet but singing still doin it like a real master.

    cheers
