I agree with dabhal about the space. Knowing how to handle the delicacy of such music is exactly what Miles meant when he said sometimes it is what you don't play that makes a song effectively meaningful. This is lovely and I love Chet's voice as well as his playing. What a musical treasure.

Chet wasn't the greatest singer in the world, but dammit, when his voice matched the melody, the sentiment, and the arrangement, he KILLED! I can't stop listening to this amazing tune. God rest your troubled beautiful soul, Chet.
What makes "greatest singer" if it is not the music that is behind him as well? too much is said today about the singer, and Musicianship is places so bad in the back that people just make 8 bar loops! A GREAT singer hears the music, and Adds his voice to it. Despite them being called accompaniment. you could remove his music and still he would sound nice. Try that with ANY beyonce song. The lack of melody and concern for chord progression, and crazy runs.. You would Never wanna hear that crap!
U sarcastic bugger - i actually just watched/listened 2 that very rendition for about 5 seconds.. As my dad always says - anything's only worth wot some1 will pay 4 it... (It's just unfortunate that only the f****** who have the money make such decisions!) .. Should have guessed by the over-usage of punctuation!!!
@sandydidit Actually the voice represents a different kinda singing. And it's very effective. Chet and Bobby Troup had those kinds of voices that melded well with both lyric and melody. And you know what -- and you won't believe me -- movie star Jane Russell's voice melded well with the dark classic melody. Listen to her sing on YouTube "You'll Know." Thanks a mil for your post!!
hello chet...you kill me with this song. it sounds like every single words are meant to recall memories of her...the one was the one and only and still is....

Singers generally fall into two catagories,
those you like and those you dislike. Joe Cocker doesn't have a voice like Pavarotti
but he's got that thing that reaches in and grabs you. Pavarotti can be recognized in nanoseconds like trumpeter Clark Terry. The elements of music are ordered differently for each of these artists in their respective fields and I think they have all mastered what they do. Another thing that comes into play is how much voice do you need to sing any particular piece?

Of course no judgement. There are choices, like an artist making his pallette.
For thiis painting I'll use this red and this yellow but not blue.Comparing artists is like,I think Rubenstein said, like comparing universes. A friend of mine uses the wonderful phrase"Different kinds of greatness" It took me awhile to get to Chet.He "hit a chord" for sure.

Talking about punctuation and the like , is that the way English people spell English today ?

@sandydidit Actually the voice represents a different kinda singing. And it's very effective. Chet and Bobby Troup had those kinds of voices that melded well with both lyric and melody. And you know what -- and you won't believe me -- movie star Jane Russell's voice melded well with the dark classic melody. Listen to her sing on YouTube "You'll Know." Thanks a mil for your post!!

Lovely, this is the type of music that never gets old. Chet Baker is perfection, vocally and instrumentally!
