Ah but, Veblen is the crime center of Marshall County. Lots of drunken Indians and Mexicans. Very high alcoholism and drugs, break-ins, domestic abuse, shootings. Feh!
Thanks for th interesting video. I was a South Dakota farm boy about 40 years ago. I can see that the dairy industry has changed almost beyond all recognition!
Just curious: Do modern dairy farmers even know how to milk a cow by hand anymore???
I know - have tried to milk by hand, but have never milked a whole cow by hand, even that I have worked on a farm 40 years ago. I think we got to go back to my old man's generation before there are some there have milked several cows by hand. He milked his fathers cows when he was a boy, they only got electricity after world war ll.
A few of the farmers on this tour drove up to Winnipeg and then on to Madison WI for WDE with dairy farming friends from MB - I had to get home to milk cows :(
Same here The cows loved lying in the sand bedded cubicles SCC were very low - It seems that the mastitis bugs cannot live in sand. The passageway was cleaned by flushing with water at milking time
ya gud 4 keepin bacteria n scc down but i dont like sand to much think it wud b quite uncomfortable cold n damp, we have cows on mats cleaned twice a day and bedded wit fresh sawdust/shavings and a layer of biosuper (its lime based with antibacterial agents- smells almost like washing powder-lovely) has great soakage abilites!!!
did u ever see the programme on the bbc on the dairy farmer from n.ireland who moved to south dakota to milk 2500 cows. his silo pit is the silage of the hill next to my house.
hey wondered if u have seen the documentry series made here in northern ireland of a northern irish farmer who went to south dakota i think in 2005 to set up a dairy farm
it was on bbc northern ireland twice the second being a catchup i dont think i cant type the website for their farm here but if u search drumgoon dairy in google u should find it
I saw it on RTE last night in rep of Ireland. The most he must have got for his own farm would be £2m which was worth $3.58m back in 2005 when he exchanged the money. He had already invested $8m dollars in the first year. Now with US milk prices down below half the price when he started he must be finding it tough going to make repayments. More power to him though not many would have the balls to sell up and leave the motherland to farm in a different country.
hi cowboy,do you know if anyone moved from your country to sd. if they did do you know how there doing? we had a below average winter here in nw wisconsin, usa. the last day in january was the only day it got above 32 degrees farenheit. base milk price dropped to 9.50 per 100 pounds.. six months ago it was at 22$ per hundred. happy new year.
Same here, our Government no longer cares about us, just our tax dollars. I am working on a plan to make farmers rich. Dont laugh, i am not jokeing. We have to market right to the consumer. I will have more info soon. Just hang in there.
We don't get any money from your government to build new dairies. I had to pay for my flight over there. The SD government picked up the bill for our hotel: accommodation and meals.
Is it possible to make money from milk in the US with the price at 10 bucks ?
I was not meaning to offend you on my other post, but many Americans feel like we are being thrown to the side by our government, i think many in England feel the same way, and i like your freindly demeanor. your videos are awsome. Hope you did not take offence. As for the dairy price i dont know (Beef Here). But as i said before what i am working on will change farming by putting the prices back in our hands. Hang in there.
The supermarkets and processors make a fortune from milk in the UK while the hard working dairy farmer is lucky if he can break even.We just have to take what we are given !
What is the nature and type of your milk marketing system/ Do you have a milk production quota regimen? If so, how is quota purtchased? In Canada, as you know, we have such production controls and quota acquistion is very expensive.
Oh, your comment about putting the prices back into the farmer's hand, is all.
At least, as a beef producer, you can market directly to the consumer with your product but if we do that with raw milk in Indiana, losing our Grade A license is at the top of the pile, let alone any other costs that might be incurred.
The department of agriculture guys over there estimated a 1000 cow barn, parlor ,160 acres of land ,1000 holsteins, slurry lagoon and silage bunkers would cost a cool $4,000,000 US and that does not include the farm house tractors and machinery !
Today it would cost even more. steel and concrete costs have risen a lot since i got that quote
i am well farmar .i do well form woking .if you need.

Oh god. I can´t realize that. These farms are much bigger as the farm-lands from my homeland, Germany. The biggest farmer in my village has 80 cows.

Gerade in den USA gäbe es genug Grünflächen um die Kühe draussen weiden zu lassen.

When i was out there a English guy in his late 20's and his partner were building a 500 jersey cow dairy near Sioux falls
Have not heard how they are doing
We got lying snow here a few days ago for the first time in in many years. Winters here tend to be mostly snow and frost free.
Milk prices are dropping here also (2 pence cut this month)
Can US dairy farmers make money at 9.50 per 100 pounds ???

fantastic!! but to build such a farm you need a lot of money. Starting from zero is rather not good idea.
