constantly getting caught with these especially with heavier opponents, Ill give these a try on Sunday, particularly the scoop under the armpit! thanks 101
You should come to BDB martial arts in Calgary to do a seminar. Victoria's fairly close if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure Brian Bird(head instructor) would love to have you. Not sure if you guys are acquanted or not.
Is there a way to escape a submission hold when someone is straddling you, the person is stronger, and they are hold both of your arms above your head, not just one arm?
That's a very good escape street-wise, (the wrist-lock is obviously illegal for sport), but anyone trying this should be careful not to give your opponent the opportunity for an armbar when you reach over.
I'm not sure if the first one would be legal, I don't think wrist locks are allowed in BJJ. Still, great techniques, thank you very much for the terrific job you're doing. Cheers.
I think bringing your arm across your chest is setting yourself up to get armbared. I usually keep bridging my opponent to make him feel unbalanced at the same time bringing in my risk towards my ear as if I am answering a phone, then I roll out.
David ,Ive used this technique many of times ,and it worked just fine ,just because it doesn't work for you is no reason to bash a fellow BJJ and JJJ artist ,theres no reason you should be telling him to put his blue belt on and calling him a white belt you should be telling him how you do things and trying to teach then to bash and act like your the better grappler .
in fact, you were a white belt when you posted this and it shows. defend the americana buy giving the armbar on the other arm. you're showing a fantasy technique
Keith Owen, who is a Pedro Sauer black belt in BJJ, does this technique as well. He in fact put it on his DVD in 2008. This wasn't something I made up. I realize you are not a fan (that's cool). You tube brings out all types of people after all ;-)
There are pitfalls in many types of set ups as (I assume you know)..and this is no different.
Where you training out of bro? What do you like to do when defending the key lock. The whole point of these videos is to add our thoughts (the views) to make us all better. We all can benefit.
yes, there arepitfalls, but this one really is glaring and needs pointing out. if someone tries to americana me from mount (where they don't have sufficient control to finish) i will usually not orry about my arm and escape mount to half guard and end up with him exposing his back, or sometimes bridge and go out the backdoor but that's more risky
To avoid confusion when I was doing techniques in my JJJ belt, I no longer wear the gi and the belt (unless I specifically say japanese jujutsu). This was over 2 years ago.
Please track down everyone else on you tube as well. There are also many techniques that are found in many different styles.
yeah, I think the americana can transition into a quick armbar if you put your arm in. Im a beginner, I wana ask how you can prevent your oponent from going to an armbar while doing this escape. Thank You.
theres a better escape try when they get the keylock reach over there head grab there wrist and lift up and put ur hand on there elbow and push off and spin them and go from there
yes...while not ideal, it can be done. Heck, In the most recent UFC, there was an arm triangle choke submission when a guy was on top IN someone's guard....anything is possible it seems ;-)
Who cares who can beat who, thats the issue with rolling with some people they are there to prove some point they can bet everyone, instead of the williness to learn and share what they know, man things have changed. As we all know any variation can be beating but at least you have another technique in you tool belt, at the end of the day glock beats all of our techniques, so share your knowledge like someone shared it with you however long you have been doing it.
maybe u would slap my moth while im keylocking ur arm..but!!!...i wouldnt have any injury if u punch hard mabe a loose tooth or broken nose but nothing serious but u would have a dislocated arm and fractured shoulder which means serious injurie for the rest of ur life;)
This is a favourite with our blackbelts and the only way I get out of it normally is by twisting my arm so they're forced to attempt an armbar, then twisting back when they try that, and hoping that i'll get an opening somewhere in between.
Gonna blow them out the water when I try this - thanks!
from what i heard, an american trained with one of the gracies... royler is the name that comes to me, but don't quote me on it. so yea, the american got it on him many times, and thus the name
i always go for americanas from mount when they try to defend i get the armbar 80% of the time, its such a cool transition none the less this is a good video.
Bobtsu; good call, I wouldn't want to leave myself open to a possible armbar counter. Next time I'll just let my shoulder get popped in the americana so I don't make that mistake. Thanks!
My instructor was at a competition a couple days ago, he cleaned house, he was on bottom in half guard and the other guy was trying to keylock him, he did something weird and reversed the keylock and submitted the guy ontop, the ref thought the other guy won becauese he didn't know what happened but my instructor got the win.
In my jiu jitsu class, our professor tells us to NEVER rap our thumb around the wrist. He teaches us just to use the four fingers around the wrist and grip with the palm.
I was curious if this was for any reason that you knew of.
Called a monkey grip. It has to do with range of motion, the ability to HOOK quicker than GRABBING and is easier to get out of if the guy on the bottom does a reversal wrist lock on you (which is on our DVD Earthbound).
Hey, thanks alot for this video. My older brother and I Train quite often, and this is one of his favorite moves... Can't wait to tweak his wrist!!! Lol.
nice one, gripping the right way is very important, watch my video "random older stuff" to see what happens if you grip the wrong way ;o) It´s pretty much at the end
Yes, it could. However, you could also get key locked if you do nothing. Explosive and fast will help to avoid being arm barred but nothing is 100% while rolling.
has any one tried straightening your arm and when they roll over for the arm bar swaying your entire body over top using there momentum to pull yourself into a side mount?
No, although they both fall into the Key Lock (or hammer lock category). The Americana will have the hand up towards the head while the kimura will have the hand pointing toward the hip. Or another way to describe: Americana (palm up) and Kimura (palm down) on the mat
Wow, thanks for those 2 counters! The only counter I learned was to place my head in the crook of my opponent's elbow (when he is attempting an americana)and post in that direction to end up in his gaurd. It works, but I like your first counter better.
nice

AFAIK wrist locks are legal. Alot of venues (MMA included) say no small joint attacks which is talking about fingers and toes, not wrists.

Position before submission right,? Isn't that where all the magic really happens?
You guys have done such a good job and clearly have a huge audience.
Can you guys address some of the other aspects of BJJ?
Grips, shrimping, bridging, getting heavy, things like that.
