  • this IS the toughest sport! i love how the horses always look so antsy to get out, like "i really want to do this!" :)

  • I wish so badly that I could do 3 day eventing, but riding is a rich man's sport and I doubt highly that i'd even get a chance. :(

  • poor,poor horses!

  • @TheArmadillo17

and yet it's so much fun :)

  • @RedAlert2303 I agree!!!!!!!!! There is noting like the feeling you get when you acomplish something with someone else. I think that all those who dont ride are missing out on something too big to explain!!! :)

  • she is so right how you can put that fear aside. I look at this now, and I think " what the hell was I thinking/doing!" There is a mental toughness about eventers and some horse riders that people don't quite relate to, they think you just sit on a horse and do nothing there.

  • I had horses roll over my body too, amazingly for being flexible and lucky on soft ground, I did not even feel it, or to have any commotio cordis. I feel awful to even see this, but would have felt worse if I know I caused my horse a fatal injury for sport and not something that happened out of necessity. War is a little different...

  • I'm so glad I quit eventing, and not for myself either.

  • @lucyinthesky80 Yes... because a 125 pound human can defiantly muscle a 1200 pound horse over a jump. These horses ADORE what they do and hate whenever they have to take time off they literally go insane. My horse has been off competition training for seven months and he's becoming a monster by kicking fences and randomly sprinting around his field because he's bored and wants a job. These horses love what they do or they wouldn't do it.

  • this was scary :O this must be an old video because some of those jumps would not be accepted nowadays x cool video though x :)

  • 9:06 Poor horse! :S

  • 10:54 OMG! Is she ok?? :S

  • 7:02 :( Is she/he ok? , 8:39 ouch!

  • 8-8:25 gives me the chills :)

  • OMG Young JIMMY! Spirit...hummmm

  • I have so much respect for riders in this sport, the people and the horses themselves are just amazing!

also lots of respect for this guy here 02:46 it always agravates me when I see riders dismount and just leave everything to attendants and grooms

  • This is harrowing and spellbinding! Great vid.

  • Awesome video - thanks so much for posting!! Talk about being on the edge of my seat!

  • very interesting

  • wow. eventing used to be a hell of a lot harder

  • I am glad that crossbuilding nowadays is much more modern and "safe",

Fences without any groundline, horrable jump into the water and riders who are not able to see a distance.

This video is like a war-report, my heart nearly stod still.

Nowadays eventing is much more horsefriendly.

Riders are forced to much more school their abilitys

  • @19580121s not really.... eventing has kinda gone downhill

  • @StormValleyStables

don't think so - not on the old continent. Here in good old Germany we have a lot of meetings and clinics about save crossbuilding. If you see what Rüdiger Schwarz has built in Aachen at the WEG. Riders improoved very much, horses too.

  • @19580121s But now you have horses that don't think. They dont' have to. It's all programed in, and the rider can just push the buttons and say go. Back when you did the ABCD, it wasn't as so.

  • soo good! glad I found this video :-) how would I get it on DVD?

  • @Fantageous @Fantageous visit my website at thehoffmancollection

    thank you

    david hoffman

  • eventers were actually knowledgable then, and know something about horses. now its all programmed into the horses head... sad

  • @elizabethsbiggestfan not all horses.... my horse is definatly a free thinker! lol

  • Comment removed

  • @elizabethsbiggestfan no its not just 'programmed' into the horses head. Sure, there are many eventers that really have no idea what they are doing (more at the lower levels) but there are plenty that do.

  • Those Crosscountry courses back then wer just INSANE! That had my hairs on end!

  • Rider at the end is incredibly lucky. INCREDIBLY! And these horses are great, and are in great shape. This is a great sport, and I admire everyone in it. I don't have the heart to be in it, though.

  • cool video i just feel bad for the horses sometimes cuz they run so hard and jump so much for so long X( oh well XD

  • Those horses are in good shape but I think it's cruel to do that many phases with no boots! That puts your horses as well as your life in danger I'm glad they don't do that anymore :( Good video though :)

  • cool video. scary fall at the end.

  • This must be an old video!

  • that fall at the end was unbelievable! so wierd to see horses jump those jumps with no boots or those tiny thin saddles. cant believe horses did all those phases

  • I love seeing how well riders took care of their horses. I wish more upper level riders (of all disciplines) took more time to care for their own mounts. Loved this video!!

  • This is a great video. Kim Walnes and The Grey Goose are incredible. Its great to see them in action (grey horse, rider wears orange and black), they won Rolex in 1982. The Grey Gooses ashes are burried near the Head Of The Lake at the horse park.

  • Thank you for your response. I am pleased to hear that Grey goose was properly honored. What a great beast. A hero really.

    David Hoffman -- filmmaker

  • @allinaday and the rider aswell, shes riding like the beast! amazing couple

  • wow the difference in quality of training of the horses from then to now is amazing!!!

  • please can someone date this video for me? if it was in preparation for the Olympics (as stated), which ones please? i'm guessing it was 1984, when the U.S. team won Gold.

    thankyou for any replies.

  • lol the guy wear the lacoste shirt at 4 min is so corny.

  • ihahah it made me laugh so hard

  • i agree 100% with you.

  • in the days of thinking riders!

  • it's inspirational to young eventers like me to see this.

  • This ws "the good old days" when I was doingit ; and had yet to be injured; that would happen later!

  • THe "Good old days:" some of the greats, Jimmy. Mike. Torrance, and Karen Stives and Kim!

  • notto forget classic Ralph!
