  • once dated a girl just because she reminded me of natalie

  • Totally Awesome.........sing it Natalie....your a beautiful woman with a lovely voice.....The stars look vey different today *_*

  • OMG.....LOVE THE WAY SHE IS DOING THIS BOWIE SONG.....THANK YOU FOR THE POST...

  • @lyric520 : Thank you very much... just enjoy !

  • Phenomenal version.

  • Excelente. No hace falta que la cante como Bowie, para eso esta el.

  • had no idea that she sang this! love it!

  • @Downbythewater73 Thanks for sharing... This is so great and makes me cry. I love Natalie Merchant and all of your poetry... One question: your nick is a PJ Harvey song?

  • @iancorgan : What do you mean ?..

  • your voice is amazing

  • Magnifique

  • I like this cover better than Bowie's

  • Beautiful song, but not to be sang by a girl.

Don't get me wrong, she has very beautiful voice, but no one would ever perform this song like David Bowie.

  • Love her...what a gift

  • NUMERO UNO

  • She is amazing, an incredible singer. Great, unique voice, this is a beautiful interpretation of Bowie's original. Love it!

  • @mchlor i dont see YOU in CONCERT!!! at least its not Lady GAGA singing but wait you would probably like her singing this!!

  • I have never heard of Natalie before seeing this clip. Could people tell me a bit more about her, she does a great version of a Bowie song.

  • @marko0430 shes great check out the album ophelia this was my first Natalie Merchant cd and one of my favourites

  • Magic

Her voice make me sad but is marvelous

  • very beautiful

  • oui, this is a beautiful version. i like her tone of voice.

  • awww

  • Well, this one passes the goosebumps test, at least.

Anyway, which version is the "original"? Bowie has recorded at least five different interpretations of Space Oddity that I'm aware of, and this one beats many of them.

  • I saw her do this live a few years back....it was amazing!! Loved iit!!

  • Great cover unique voice

  • This gives me a errie feeling makes me think of Space Odessy the movie "all these stars"

  • Thank You Very Much For Posting This....

  • @welty72 : You're welcome !

  • This is a great cover of one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It rates with Fionna Apple's cover of "Across the Universe". Natalie has a voice for the ages.

  • Ehh, it's alright but fails in comparison to Bowies

  • graceful and beautiful

  • JUST GOT BACK FROM SEEING HER ONE HR AGO

SHE WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY

  • Sweet!

  • i love her voice sooo much! but I will always love Bowie's version more...

  • sucks, bowie is the best

  • when she dance on the stage is amazing

  • This version of Space Oddity is really aesome, I really like Natalie's voice and how she interprets this song. I was looking for this video for a long time and finally I found it...

You just have to sit and enjoy... :-)

  • I saw her a few years ago with Bob Dylan. I confess I wasn't familiar with her music because i tend to avoid contemporary or pop music. I was absolutely wrong. I was completely blown away, engaged, mesmerized. I will no longer assume that just because an artist is current, there music is commercial fodder. If she should do a show in or near Maine again, I'm getting a good seat.

  • OMG this is so amazing!!! =)

  • I think a cover should break new ground. This is adept karaoke.

  • sono estasiato, dico davvero

  • Just been to see her in concert she is amazing :)

  • @shayleuk Could you tell more about it ? Thanks !..

  • @Downbythewater73 I went to see her in concert in Brighton, UK she did songs from her new album 'Leave your Sleep' and some older stuff it was fantastic she is wonderful live :)

  • There's only one Bowie, but this is pretty good.

  • Wow.

  • Gran cover

Solo alguien como Natalie puede interpretar de esta manera Space Oditty

  • N.M could sing the phone book and make it sound good, imo.

  • @rhyfelur

    Well said! I agree 10,000 %.

  • there aren't words... amazing just doesn't cut it....

  • Her vocals are so restrained yet dynamic, tells the story with her eyes, the wavering gives it a eeriness that is unique to her style, I wish she went Goth, imagine the depth of darkness she could plumb with such sensitivity to lyrical context and a very dark voice.

  • molto bello cara carmen, come tutti i tuoi video, grazie ,ho sempre amato l'autore e la canzone, una dolce notte ,a presto sabina

  • wunderkind with angel voice, intelligence transformed into beauty!

  • wunderkind with angel voice, intelligence transformed into beauty!

  • This song will warp your mind in a good way

  • Castle? o.0

  • Lovely.

  • awesome

  • This is such a beautiful version of David Bowie's song. She made it her own and that's what I think artists should do, put their own spin on it.

  • When Bowie is covered well it only enhances his legend.

  • She has this unusual thing in her voice..that really attracts me to her... I love how she sings effortlessly without having to raise a note when she's singing, yet you will not hear her sing it monotonously...maybe because she really can sing...no other way to describe it...

  • It's so unususal to hear a cover version that's better than the original. But this is one such. Spectacular voice. A rediscovery for me.

  • I AGREE 1000%

  • Thank you very much for posting this Video! V.

  • @vaccumme : You're welcome ! :-)

  • Beautiful

Her voice really adds beauty to this song.

Bowie made it sound colder, I like Natalie's style for this one.

Such strong lyrics - beautiful is the best word I could come up with.

  • I love her rendition of this song

  • I think she is a wonderful singer but this is def NOT the best song for her song to sing IMHO, It sounds much better in other variations. this one just doesnt pack the punch bowie packed when he sang it.

  • I start to cry, when she sings "Can you hear me, Major Tom?" I wish she would come back...

  • she is....new album next month.

  • I would like to hear Natalie and David Bowie do this as a duet, Natalie could be "Ground Control" and David "Major Tom".

  • @MrArtudtoo great idea dude!!!i'd love it too

  • @jetsonic69 ROFL, Bob Dylan did NOT write this you fool. Where did you get that from anyway????

  • i was so in love with Natalie Merchant

  • This is really good :) so what?? Its not the original like Bowies version...but do you know that David Bowie didnt write this song either ? :) its a Bob Dylan classic

    lol =D

  • @jetsonic69, did you know it's bowie after all. No way that Bob Dylan invented "major tom".

  • Ugh, ok, normally I love Natalie Merchant, but this is terrible. Check out Happy Rhodes cover of this song. With pretty much no production value whatsoever, Rhodes DESTROYS this full-on concert effort.

    This was very dissapointing

  • @HavocGunStar Y TU HERMANA ? AND YOUR SISTER ?

  • she is real cause she has quality and the knowlege to use use it.that s the role of artists, share themselves to open the dialogue and keep it opend .even if a song or other kind of art is already done : )

  • What is essential for me is that the loneliness and isolation of space be brought out by the singer; she gave me chills! Well done!

  • what a voice, what a song in general!li love her!i love the song "which side are you on".she magnetizes you!!!!!!

  • I'm a huge David Bowie fan, and I have to say that this is amazing. <333

  • Love this! More than a cover is a new dimension of the song

  • I love this cover! Only Natalie can produce covers that are on par with the originals!

  • can anyone belieeve what a goddess natalie is..nothing belongs to her .

  • Very nice :) She sings weirdly but I like it ! The band is very good :)

  • Weirdly? What's weird about an amazing voice?

  • errr,no,she sings just like Natalie Merchant................

  • And don't forget the wonderful "Natalie Merchant, Live in concert" CD, same set as above !

  • As good as this concert in NY was, (and it was very good), she's performed even better ones, including a tremendous Hammerstein Ballroom appearance in 1997 or so (though most recent appearance at Hiro Ballroom in 2008 or so was only soso)...would love to see her tour again.

  • maravillosa

  • amazing lovin it

  • Goosebumps @1:16

  • It seems that a lot of people like to rain down criticism on Natalie. In my opinion, Natalie is a unique talent. That's all folks !

  • chills and got choked up Awesome!!

  • Great cover. She did a good job, and her band too.

    Thanks for posting the video.

  • You're welcome ! :-)

  • Natalie is better than pork. She is the new white meat.

  • GooD Day

  • Simply beautiful!

    Who playing the acoustic guitar?

  • I love this. It SOOO DOES work. NATAlIE FOR THE WIN

  • sorry. this doesn't work!

  • i don't understand why there are so many haters really it's a wonderful cover and i doubt that any other other musician would have been able to interpret it like this.

  • @3horncinama imho - many individuals can't accept change, cover versions are change of what is accepted norm. The influence of the original artist lives on through the inspirational renditions of others, to me, cover versions are a huge honor to the original artist. Thanks for posting this Downbythewater, it's lovely ;.)

  • @0marigolds Thanks, too.

  • @0marigolds - I agree, but only when they're done right. In this instance, Natalie did it right. As she always does.

    Mesmerizing performance.

  • Natalie Kick ass to everyone

    no doubt

    Simply the best woman voice

  • Her timing is AWFUL, Cat Power is WAY better.

  • I dont like this version as good as the original, but I give it an "A" for effort.

  • Natalie is better than bjork.....

  • Wow! I had no idea Natalie sang this song. I was prepared to cringe before I listened to it, as most cover versions of popular songs don't come off well. I never should have doubted her. She pulls it off beautifully. What an amazing voice. And a superb backing band as well.

  • Hands down- the sexiest voice ever!

  • Housten (spelling?) you ask?

  • Great voice

  • sooo beautiful

  • Natalie is a Goddess.

  • can you eeeeearrr me: fantastic

  • Wow!

  • Great performance, as great as bowie's!

  • David Bowie's is still better. And she missed it, at the and it was "moon" and she said "world".

  • perfect !

  • i absolutely adore natalie merchant....and davisdbowie!!!!

  • I hope i don't get too many thumbs down for this, but... Her version is quite obviously inferior to bowie's. I'm sure she tried her best but she also managed to drain out all the magic with that weak, apathetic voice of hers. And lastly, no matter what u make of it, so NOT sexy.

  • I hope you'll get many thumbs down for this !

  • weak apathetic voice, her voice is lush and sweeping and enveloping... her version wasnt meant for comparison to Bowie, it's probly cause she loved the song... if you like Bowies version better - go listen and enjoy it...

  • I'll agree with you on that one.

  • Her voice is insanely good. Good sir, you get my lowered thumb. What's more, her voice just oozes sexiness

  • I love this cover...it is so haunting and beautiful...

  • WOW!!! I've always enjoyed the work of 10,000 maniacs and Natalie Merchant, but this cover is just phenomenal!!! The ambience they created with this cover and her beautiflully hanuting vocals. Wish I would've been there for this!!!

  • natalie merchant is a real artist

  • Great voice and she never had to try to be sensual or sexual. She just was.

  • She just IS ! :-)

  • what beautiful woman god

Give one seemed for my birthday please

    Love her lover her

  • Wow. Nice.

  • Ah, she one of my favorite voices of all time! I loved this video, thanks for posting =)

  • You're welcome ! ;-)

  • sorry for my ignorance..

I never listen too much from her.. but, hell! she's awesome! what a voice! some special texture in her voice... I dunno... now she is on my favs!

  • FAIL

  • sexxxxxy!

  • love her! she is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Stunning!!!

  • What a wonderful performance. I don't think Natalie was holding back on the build-up - after all, this is how a very important musician before her did the song. Her voice certainly is velvet in this cover and I have nothing but kudos for her to even attempt this.

  • Ahhhh yes, most fabulous. I think I`ll do it again. Thank you Natalie!

  • I was expecting a big exploding chorus but it seems she was really holding herself back.

  • Te amo Natalie Te amo

  • I like her on the verse, and a little less on the chorus and the bridge...part of it is, that she has an inner intensity that isnot expressed like ou are used to....She is good...She didn't do good on "Sympathy" byt he Stones

  • Simply I love her voice

planet earth should have more natalies merchant

because this woulde be a better place I m sure

  • awesome lady

  • Im

    stepping through the door

And Im floating in a most peculiar way

    And the stars

    look very different today

    5****Z

  • Gosh, this is an example of a great singer not having the good sense to know when a song is out of her league. This cover is downright awful.

  • really disagree.

it speaks of the hallowness of it all, the complete lack of humanity. honestly, i never got that from the orginal.

  • very beautiful !

  • eu,andrea,adorei!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This song was the first song inducted into my personal pop/rock single hall of fame back in 1986 - to get in a song has to send me when I first experience it and then send me again over a decade later - Natalie is one of 20 inducted into my personal female pop/rock recording artist hall of fame. I love her version of this song. I've been hearing about Cat Power but have yet to hear a song by her. So jzoom45 I'll be seeking out Cat Powers version and expect it to send me into interstellar space.

  • alhtough i would love to find a full recording of cat power's cover, this is also a great cover

  • i like marchant, a lot...but i think cat power's version is better...the only thing is that it isn't avaialbe =(

  • where can i find a download of this song i ve looked everywhere and its nowhere

  • Girl's got balls.

  • Oh, yeah, this is glorious, as is usually the case with something Natalie touches :-). I'll bet even Bowie digs it (aside from the royalties *chuckle!*), which gives me an idea --- imagine a duet, with Natalie as "Ground Control" and DB as "Major Tom". *That* would bring down the house! :-D

  • Oh my goodness! That would be the *best* duet ever! Great cover, I love it, and I'm very hard to please when it comes to covers :D

  • Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How soon they forget.

She sung at Clinton's Inaugural in 1992.

    It is great, however,

"Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong"

  • Truly mesmerizing, Natalie can do no wrong.

  • THis is STUNNING< so beautifully chilling. Never heard of her or seen this before. Very impressive stuff, *****

  • i've never really understood why this incredible human accomplishment has been so negated and made nothing of.

meanwhile billions of humans believe that moses, jesus and mohammed ascended to this place called heaven.

and they are all killing each other.

  • you make it sound like a bad thing

  • If they'd keep the killing between themselves, it wouldn't be such a bad thing.

  • wow, Natalie is my hero for taking on this song, really showing her talent here, excellent cover.

  • oh my god,,that lovely voice

  • Estupenda, gracias por colgarla.

  • Excellent cover of this song.

  • Her way of making the movement while singing reminds me of Donna Summer when singing "I Feel Love"

  • She dances like Franco Battiato

    Balla come Battiato

  • I lovee Thiss Song I Was Only five WenThey Did Thiss

I Miss Being that young :(

  • My husband just peeked out of the kitchen and said,"What the fuck?" I'm usually with the ladies, but.....

  • with the ladies? can we watch?

  • It'a all in the details and how she throws down her cape at 2:45 taken by the back camera...this song wouldn't have been the same without it.

  • I actually like this version better... with her voice. Although Bowie's version is great.
