@Downbythewater73 Thanks for sharing... This is so great and makes me cry. I love Natalie Merchant and all of your poetry... One question: your nick is a PJ Harvey song?
Well, this one passes the goosebumps test, at least.
Anyway, which version is the "original"? Bowie has recorded at least five different interpretations of Space Oddity that I'm aware of, and this one beats many of them.
This is a great cover of one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It rates with Fionna Apple's cover of "Across the Universe". Natalie has a voice for the ages.
This version of Space Oddity is really aesome, I really like Natalie's voice and how she interprets this song. I was looking for this video for a long time and finally I found it...
I saw her a few years ago with Bob Dylan. I confess I wasn't familiar with her music because i tend to avoid contemporary or pop music. I was absolutely wrong. I was completely blown away, engaged, mesmerized. I will no longer assume that just because an artist is current, there music is commercial fodder. If she should do a show in or near Maine again, I'm getting a good seat.
@Downbythewater73 I went to see her in concert in Brighton, UK she did songs from her new album 'Leave your Sleep' and some older stuff it was fantastic she is wonderful live :)
Her vocals are so restrained yet dynamic, tells the story with her eyes, the wavering gives it a eeriness that is unique to her style, I wish she went Goth, imagine the depth of darkness she could plumb with such sensitivity to lyrical context and a very dark voice.
She has this unusual thing in her voice..that really attracts me to her... I love how she sings effortlessly without having to raise a note when she's singing, yet you will not hear her sing it monotonously...maybe because she really can sing...no other way to describe it...
I think she is a wonderful singer but this is def NOT the best song for her song to sing IMHO, It sounds much better in other variations. this one just doesnt pack the punch bowie packed when he sang it.
This is really good :) so what?? Its not the original like Bowies version...but do you know that David Bowie didnt write this song either ? :) its a Bob Dylan classic
Ugh, ok, normally I love Natalie Merchant, but this is terrible. Check out Happy Rhodes cover of this song. With pretty much no production value whatsoever, Rhodes DESTROYS this full-on concert effort.
she is real cause she has quality and the knowlege to use use it.that s the role of artists, share themselves to open the dialogue and keep it opend .even if a song or other kind of art is already done : )
As good as this concert in NY was, (and it was very good), she's performed even better ones, including a tremendous Hammerstein Ballroom appearance in 1997 or so (though most recent appearance at Hiro Ballroom in 2008 or so was only soso)...would love to see her tour again.
i don't understand why there are so many haters really it's a wonderful cover and i doubt that any other other musician would have been able to interpret it like this.
@3horncinama imho - many individuals can't accept change, cover versions are change of what is accepted norm. The influence of the original artist lives on through the inspirational renditions of others, to me, cover versions are a huge honor to the original artist. Thanks for posting this Downbythewater, it's lovely ;.)
Wow! I had no idea Natalie sang this song. I was prepared to cringe before I listened to it, as most cover versions of popular songs don't come off well. I never should have doubted her. She pulls it off beautifully. What an amazing voice. And a superb backing band as well.
I hope i don't get too many thumbs down for this, but... Her version is quite obviously inferior to bowie's. I'm sure she tried her best but she also managed to drain out all the magic with that weak, apathetic voice of hers. And lastly, no matter what u make of it, so NOT sexy.

WOW!!! I've always enjoyed the work of 10,000 maniacs and Natalie Merchant, but this cover is just phenomenal!!! The ambience they created with this cover and her beautiflully hanuting vocals. Wish I would've been there for this!!!
What a wonderful performance. I don't think Natalie was holding back on the build-up - after all, this is how a very important musician before her did the song. Her voice certainly is velvet in this cover and I have nothing but kudos for her to even attempt this.
I like her on the verse, and a little less on the chorus and the bridge...part of it is, that she has an inner intensity that isnot expressed like ou are used to....She is good...She didn't do good on "Sympathy" byt he Stones
This song was the first song inducted into my personal pop/rock single hall of fame back in 1986 - to get in a song has to send me when I first experience it and then send me again over a decade later - Natalie is one of 20 inducted into my personal female pop/rock recording artist hall of fame. I love her version of this song. I've been hearing about Cat Power but have yet to hear a song by her. So jzoom45 I'll be seeking out Cat Powers version and expect it to send me into interstellar space.
Oh, yeah, this is glorious, as is usually the case with something Natalie touches :-). I'll bet even Bowie digs it (aside from the royalties *chuckle!*), which gives me an idea --- imagine a duet, with Natalie as "Ground Control" and DB as "Major Tom". *That* would bring down the house! :-D
