I have a 1970 Silver GTO with VOE just like this car except no Ram Air. No Voe's were sold to the public with Ram Air. 2 prototypes were made for advertising and then they were destroyed. Of course someone always claims to have one with Ram Air and VOE but you know how that story goes. I have heard that claim more than twice.

I like all muscle cars from the 60's and 70's,i've owned quite a few in my life.You guys talking up the Hemi crack me up.Was the Hemi a beast?Indeed it was...if it was tuned properly,not many were back in the day.Seen many Hemi's get beat by 440's,LS6 454's,427's and Buick,Pontiac and Olds 455's.The Hemi was a finicky engine that when tuned properly was a world beater,most were out of tune and got beat on a regular basis on the street.

The "Humbler" was a rare option offered for GTOs. in 1970. There was a knob you could pull labeled VOE. It stood for Vacuum Operated Exhaust. A vacuum actuated diaphragm much like a choke pull-off simply uncorked a hole in the muffler located ahead of the baffles. Did it increase horsepower through lower back pressure? Probably not much.

It is called a cut off valve. It redirects the exhaust away from the muffler so you get more power, and in this case you can just make your engine louder. Fucking EPA made them illegal for emissions concerns.

@STA1212 They were called 'cut outs' and were cable operated (like in the videos) OR manually operated from outside the car. Some cutouts were merely block-off plates welded to exhaust stubs that were installed before the mufflers and had to be manually unbolted or 'uncapped'. NONE were legal and actually were too loud for my taste. Give me a pair of good 'ole 'Smitty' straight through Glass-packs anyday.

One thing I love about pontiacs is that all the parts were interchangable, so you could create a pretty cool ride if you wanted too. My uncle totaled the front end of his 1980 pontiac trans am, so he went to a junk yard to find some spare T/A parts, although he couldn't find any that were decent, but he did find a 1969 GTO front end. he put it on the T/A and it looked pretty bad ass. although it sorta ruined the car its still one of a kind and I certainly like it just as much as the original T/A

Great commercial! I'm a hardcore GTO owner; sold my 70 to my best friend; still have my 68 h/t and my 65 convertible. Original GTOs are the greatest cars made in my opinion. The "new" GTOs are just plain ugly in comparison. I think GM is still punishing the Pontiac division for tricking out that 64 Tempesting and "Getting Those Orders" in violation of the company cubic inch policy!

It was the vacuum operated exhaust (VOE), designed to reduce backpressure on the exhaust, and make the exhaust sound louder. GM cancelled the option after about 230 '70 GTO's were built with it. GM also ordered Pontiac to pull this commercial, because it "promoted" street racing.
