I think America's fear of Socialism stems from a total lack of understanding. I wonder how many of the people who talk about the 'evils of socialism' have actually read a piece of Marxist literature. I'm a socialist because I believe that all individuals have the RIGHT to healthcare, education, housing and social security.

Under capitalism men can never be created equal as was envisaged by Jefferson. So I don't think that as socialist ideas go against 'american values'.

I don't know what's so incredible about my statements. I live in the boondocks, thus the volunteer fire station (I promised them I'd be more careful with my brush fires since the incident a few years ago). My wife and I homeschooled the children a while, then to a low-cost church school. My "kids" are just fine and raising their own children now, who adore me. Some (not all) of our local cops are crooked, so I drive slowly and carefully and don't ask for trouble. Nothing too unusual...

The police are too many and too powerful and too corrupt. My area has a volunteer fire department, and it suits us just fine. Of course, I know what you're saying--there are certain "socialistic" functions to our society that would be hard to dismantle without widespread chaos. They could all stand a trimming, down to the bone.

Our politician have been allowed an addiction to ever-increasing amounts of our money for far too long now. It's time for a Citizen intervention into the problem. How many tea party folks have you met? Many of us are against SS, Medicare and other welfare state entities because they are unsustainable. We prefer to pay and save for ourselves instead of having taxes go through ten or twelve layers of bureaucracy before they are 'returned' to us as 'entitlements'. The same goes for government health care. The more self-reliant we are, the more we can help ourselves and others...instead of waiting for 'Bama to rescue us.
