Yes,it stopped just before Dimbleby explained that fact! I guess it wasn't as rare a situation as might be presumed, for families to be divided by the Civil war.
The English were quite fond of beheading's back in those day.I'm certain they all believed then that beheading was the kindest way to execute someone.Though now they realize that the human head can actually live as long as 8 minutes severed from the body.Just imagine how frightening a prospect that it was for the poor soul's that lost they're head's and went through the agony of watching their bodies being hauled off the scaffold. Horrifying.I feel most for Her Majesty Queen Anne Boleyn.Innocent
Let's hope the working class and population of this country finally get their revenge on the ruling class, and kick the lot of them out. Freedom to the people!
Thanks for posting this. I love that painting of Charles on the horse. He was one of our best kings and the cruelty shown to him and to his fifteen year old daughter was shameful. He died for the rights of his people and with great courage.
Yes, Charles was executed by his own people but then why should we be shocked? The British Monarchy and its poiltics have always been rather dangerous if not deadly. It proves that the King even in those times did not always call the shots.
Not his own people, one power-hungry, sadistic monster, the thrice-accursed Cromwell. Even one of the most important parliamentarian traitors, Fairfax, was disgusted by the decision to murder the King.
The professionalism of the executioner (who was often drunk) depends a lot on how much the beheadee paid to get the job done cleanly. We can only presume Mary Queen of Scots was miserly, considering they had to chase the old lady around and then hold her down. She definitely did not co-operate. If one had paid the man in the mask enough, and one held still 4 the act, execution by this method guaranteed a very rapid death. If Mary had dignity, as Charles did, her death wd not have been SO messy.
Some professional executioners even used a large sword to get the job done, as they were more efficient. Such is the case with Anne Boleyn's execution.
If you watch the show Worst Jobs in History they describe the headsman's job and it wasn't always as well done as Charles the I execution, I guess it is good to be king because even your execution is done better then everyone else's.

Wonderful program. But, it looks like satin to me, not silk. (Someone once said the French Revolution was the end of satin for men.)

Wonderful portraits indeed........After Van Dykes death and the King moved to Oxford Dobson painted many great portraits of the Cavaliers.
Charles was magnificent at his trial......refusing to recognise the validity of the court.
No ordinary prisoner indeed.

It's amazing that it only took onestrike to cut off his head given the fact that it normally took several.
