@hejjagedu, (my understanding) I think its because in the fallout universe, the 1950's are the last "civilized" years (for america) where industries (such as record studios, Cola companies, and all those "goodies") existed before everyone starts lauching nukes at each other. Therefor not letting society flourish and interact with each other like our universe has. Understand? =3

@MayerEO- I believe the explanation was that culture was suppressed by the government so that it couldn't evolve-and music is included in culture.

However, the "technical" explanation is that this is a retro-futuristic concept, and many people in the 50s viewed the overall culture of the future as the same. Only with more awesome technology and the like. That, or they saw it as the "nuclear age," but even then the culture(in their eyes) was going to be the same. In the media of it, that is.
