Stunning. Who CARES whether this is in a lower key than Lanza? It's not "in character" with the operetta, it's simply an inspirational song, sung by an inspirational man. Just beautiful.
Why is it an either or? Lanza is great, and more dynamic in his version, but Domingo is more soothing. Someday, you kids will realize there is no "best ever". Either you like it, or you don't. I love both.
Great Performance by Domingo ! By the way this key is a whole step lower than Lanza, not a third, so the climax note at the end of the song is a high Ab4, not G4.I would say this is a more of a baritenor range. In his younger days, I think he would of sang this song a half step higher, ending on the tenors high A4 !. Nevertheless, Domingo does a great job with this moving song. Thanks for posting !
true observation, but don't forget Domingo was less than a month shy of 54 the night of this performance, while Lanza's recordings were mostly done in the decade of his 30's...
I DO think that it is a bit disappointing, however... he should have sang it a bit higher.

This is sung a full third lower than Lanza. In other words, where Lanza sings a high Bb, Domingo only sings a G. This is a baritone key.

@OettingerCroat
Domingo began his career as a baritone (for 2 years) and lately he returned to Baritone role, apart from conducting ! What a long career.

@operabeauty but a baritone key can also be nice and this is clearly shown by Domingo.
I also sing the same key as he does, but I only hope I will be able to sing so beautiful and with such a powerful voice as he does.

What a lovely rendition. I have to say though that this hymn will forever belong to Mario Lanza.
