My guess is that men fall for this kind of thing because they're so hopeless they'll fall for anything that promises some headway and because the reason why they're hopeless - their devotion to information - means they'll listen to him to see what he gives away, which, when it comes to girls, is wide of the mark. His opening line? It says "I'm terrified of talking to girls but had nothing to lose by giving it a shot" is better than nothing.
If his credentials are so good, why's he using such corny routines and why'd he totally draw a blank from that girl he was talking to? I would have been more convinced if he'd seemed more self-confident, not let himself get led all the way through the interview and had flirted with her and got her laughing all the way through. That's what I'd have done.
