  • Lol these old songs r great

  • like this comment if you're a kid like me but you love old music

  • Pretty good playing from Gerry. The octave thing ala Wes Montomery at the start. Harrsion used this on early beatle recordings. Please please me, Me to you etc

  • I like both this version and the Beatles.

  • Is there anyone that knows how to play the intro the way he does it?

Or can someone post a TAB and not chords how to play it the way he does it in the video?

  • Oh dear,!! I should imagine most of these comments are written by folk who haven't got a clue about Merseybeat as it was . Gerry and the P.M.where a great, great live band, whoppin' sound with big amps ,all good muso's ,listen to the keyboard parts and fab bass lines . If you need tabs to this though , god help your musical ability,I 'd give up, 'er 8 chords,3 of them are quick passin ones.!!! anyway, a great band at the time .

  • i like this version...but i must say i like the beatles version better

  • 14 people don´t know how to do it

  • This song is awesome.

  • Wonderful clip. From a time when upbeat pop gems seemed to flow plentifully and constantly. It does capture the charm of that far more innocent time that I was very happy to live through.

  • BRAVOOOOO GUYS!!!! this is madly goooood!!!!

  • They were a real class act.Showed us the British Invasion was really the great thing for music as it's proved out today.

  • I loved them but this audience doesnt seem to, they werent as good looking as some other British invasion bands I gues...

  • @sixtiesforever1966 They were the first UK group to have 3 #1 singles with their first 3 records, but unlike the Beatles who were 4 different personalities they were basically just a group fronted by Gerry, the hits dried up after a couple of years and Gerry decided to go into light entertainment for a few years appearing in musicals and cabaret, he did forn a new group a few years later and they still tour the 60's circult.

  • @sixtiesforever1966 they didn't write this song, or most of their other songs. this song was originally written with the intention of having the beatles release it, but they wanted to release and original (Love Me Do).

  • Beatles fans r more exciting ,

And johns piano playin is also more exciting he doesnt just sit there , like on " im down"

When he plays with his elbows and stuff

  • i love this song it is my favourite song

why does none have any appreciation for the old classics

  • i love this song it is my favourite song

  • maybe they were on drugs, wait no drugs in those days.

  • The crowd is dead compared to the excitement level of the beatles!

  • @blockleg That's good...in a way. At least you can listen to the music instead a stadium of screaming girls!

  • Manchester's answer to the Beatles... 1961

  • I CANNOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME FIND THE CHORDS HES PLAYING!

  • @legolas35653 Hello there, I found the chords on ultimate-guitar[dot]com. However, there are two different versions.

Unfortunatley, Youtube will not allow me to post the link, so type in Gerry and the Pacemakers in the search bar.

    Have fun

  • @legolas35653 are you stupid?

  • this baby is i a gem. solid gold. so what if the beatles turned it down? they did pretty good a with a gzillion others---and im a big fan.so gerry & co took this to #1. the beatles version of it is pretty good also look that up on u tube. like they said in the godfather part 2, gerry said "let me whet my beak a little bit." if the heads fr outer space said play 1 song fr rock 'n' roll that would impress them, i would play "please please me" the greatest song by the greatest group of all time.

  • French version by Claude François and Dick Rivers.

  • Geez. Wot does it take for those girls at 0:50 to not look miserable. It was a number1. Surely they'd like the song.

  • no wonder the Beatles rejected this song,,,,,GAY!

  • @NonStopRocker As a die-hard, lifelong, TRUE Beatles fan, it was the worst mistake they've ever made. Not only did they miss out on good music, they could have had another #1 hit.

  • I too am a "TRUE" Beatles fan I watched them on Ed Sullivan when I was a kid and have been a fan ever since....and trust me...they didnt regret missing this song.... they hated it...they thought it was too "formula" and they wanted to do their own thing....and I really dont think they were too bummed they only had 20 number 1 hits instead of 21...lol....but thanks anyway...been a long time since I had such a belly laugh..!!

  • @lfcuruguay19 hey im a lifetime beatles fan myself, big time, but so what if they didnt want this one & gerry and co took it to #1...i mean, cant someone else whet their beak a little bit as they said in the godfather part 2? the beatles did please please me instead.. the greatest song by the greatest group of all time.a friend once asked me if the fate of the worlds was at stake and i had to play a song fr rock 'n' roll to impress this man billions of yrs ahead of us, this is what i chose.

  • THANKS A LOT FOR RELIVING THE 60'S BRITTISH INVASION!!

  • Beat music, British beat, or Merseybeat!!!

  • They could at least play their own instruments -and write their own material which is what few pop stars today are able to do. Easy if you've got a good voice to sing other peoples material!

  • @Jakebud13 could not agree more it was there song to begin with anyway

  • excellent live!

  • I find it amazing that in the very early Sixties you could go to the Cavern Club or some other similar venue and see BOTH the Beatles and Gerry and the Pacemakers on the same bill. How great it must have been to have been young and living in the Liverpool area at that time.

  • @August8th1969 Just living in the sixties was the greatest expression of freedom, especially in music. Everything was new. Doo wop was getting to be a bad joke and lets face it-those blue suede shoes were starting to show some wear. By the time the Stones came along we even dumped the look alike dress that made you a 'group'. Free at last free at last.

  • the beatles version is better

  • notice the fans. they like the song, but they are nowhere near as enthusiastic as they are when the beatles come to to town

  • My favorite from this group. 2 thumbs up!

  • @jsbach15 Written by John and Paul

  • @rhcp500 Written FOR John and Paul, not by them.

  • @rigaudien Yes, yes, you're right. I was confusing this and "I Wanna Be Your Man", which John and Paul wrote and gave away to the Rolling Stones. The Beatles didn't right this, they just passed on it when it was offered to them

  • @rhcp500 On the CD Anthology part I, you can hear the Beatles' version. Not bad at all, but the band wasn't crazy about taping it (suggested by George Martin). He gave it to Gerry et voilà !

  • They were a real class act.Showed us the British Invasion was really the great thing for music as it's proved out today.

  • He needs to hold that guitar a little higher - it's not quite touching his chin.

  • what a hottie!!

  • I wish we had original voices like these in today's music. the Auto tune ruined it all

  • Good song. Very good song.

  • Very good!

  • wow, they really should have had some kind of security there. those fans were WAAAAY out of control...

  • @manichaze53 you should watch the video of "It's gonna be alright" on here... totally the opposite

  • @BloodyAvenue jeez thank god... watching this is totally depressing

  • Whats up with the girls? They look bored. They don"t seem excited about Gery and the pacemakers. They're not screaming their brains out or jumping up and down. I mean Its' a great song. It has a jumppy and up beat tune. I sang it with my roomates band in 1979. Not only the girls jump up and screamed, but danced, and had a good time.

  • @MrMotownmanny Yes I love it and I'm 21, I love oldies 50-60s songs

  • I love these videos! Brings back a lot of memoriesI found a 60's set that seems really cool - it has Dusty Springfield, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Herman's Hermits and Small Faces - reelinintheyears(dot)com/britishinvasion

  • Brian Epstein who managed the BEATLES also made this great tune possible.

  • Brilliant Gerry, a real gent.

  • lmao the girl clapping @ 1:26 "- ____-" xDD

  • Wow, the girls are so quiet in this.

This makes me know more than ever that The Beatles was different in every possible way.

  • Wow the audience is like really going wild and stuff...

  • Is this from the swedish television show 'Drop In'?

  • wow... bands that can actually play their instruments.

  • I always wonder what would have happened to these guys if they weren't stablemates with the Beatles in terms of Brian Epstein. It's actually a good song, believe it or not, and I think it's better than the Beatles version (and Please Please Me was worth it).

  • .. How do you do what you do to me ... and they still do ! ... WOW! ... those times were such a sweetie era of mine listening over-and-over again these lovely lads... tks. for ya share ... from Budapest

  • I bet they have pace-makers now :)

  • i love the girls faces at 1:29 lol

  • Actually this song was supposed to be the Beatles first No 1 Hit, but they didnt want to play it. Instead they released "Please Please Me", which was written by John.

  • Correction: "Love Me Do" was The Beatles' first recorded single.

  • when was this?

  • good song but its so short

  • I am glad they decided to go with the Name jerry and the Pacemakers and not Mars Bars. I worked for the Company Mars and they are........they were better off being caled the Hershey's instead. at least Hershey's have better Candy.

  • I was in the front row of a concert they put on in Antwerp, Belgium in 65 or 66 that was recorded for Belgian TV. I called out a request for "How Do You Do It", Gerry acknowledged it and they played it. They were quite a band.

  • Very cool story about an awesome band! Peace!

  • APLAUSOS !!!

  • I just discovered this wonderful group yesterday while watching the Ed Sullivan Show Rock N' Roll Classics on the PBS channel. I instantly fell in love with Gerry and the Pacemakers. Can't believe I never heard of them before, but thank god for the PBS station, so youngsters like me can enjoy and discover new music (well new to me anyway lol) from the 1960s and so on. :D

  • i saw the exact same thing and thats how i discovered them as well, they are great.

  • Great post DarkNaomi. It is good to know that this music is still be enjoyed by a younger set. Gerry and the Pacemakers were a great "British Invasion" group who had a lot of energy and a lot of good songs.

  • @DarkNaomi He had a great voice !

  • Did you think maybe the audience was asked politely to allow so that the recording could be made quietly

  • The piano player's quite pleased with his solo......"hey, I didn't know I was this good !!

Wonderful song. Love that voice and all those chord changes.

  • @drrjim Gerry is playing a 335 usually its a gretsch or rick 12 string

  • It was not written by The Beatles. George Martind wanted them to play this music, but they refused.

  • Comment removed

  • this was originally written for the beatles to perform but the beatles said they could never show their faces in london with that song, and george martin gave it to jerry and the pacemakers

  • That"s not quite true everything"s right except the beatles said they couldn"t show their face in liverpool, england playing that song

  • 1965-3rdyearhigh

  • Wonderfull musician from Brian Epstein's stable of artists. Love you, Brian!

  • What a FANTASTIC band, should have been inducted into the RRHOF a LONG time ago!

  • Agreed, first band to have 3 consecutive number 1's, including their debut single. Not even the Beatles acheived this. I think the next band to do this was "Frankie goes to Hollywood". G&TP was my favourite band of the 60's, and I still have great affection for them, and I believe they are still performing, or at least they were until VERY recently. You sir/madam, are a lover of GREAT music from a GREAT band. All the best

  • I have always liked Gerry and The Pacemakers. This was a time of great muscial expantion. Peter & Gordon, Chad & Jermy, Jay and The Americans and many others made this time very memorable to the generation of that time.

  • i tried holding my epiphone casino in that position, and was it uncomfortable. Gerry Marsden must have had an impressive wingspan to play guitar like that!!

  • They were competing with the beatles song Please Please me whick went to #1, I wonder if the audience were just not as impressed with them as the beatles ?

  • This and "Please Please Me" both went to number one! =)

  • i know german audiances are restrained

  • They're in shock about how high Gerry Marsden holds his guitar! LOL!

  • Probably...i am too :P

  • Great to see such a tight live performance from the 60s with such good sound quality - thanks for the posting this one up!

  • Great video - thanks for the post. German audiences sure are dull - these guys kicked ass

  • zidman, shame on you! You are a 'racist'.

    German audiences are wonderful,if you

    know how to treat them.

First make sure they have their bellies are filled 'mit bier'.

Next start every concert with the "Horst Weisel" Germans love that kind of music.

Next give them some 'heavy Lizt" before you know it, they will jump to their feet and

send love to all.....Sieg Heil, means, get

up and dance, lard ass! Germans are wonderful dancers and they rock like it's

    1939!

  • Du bist ein Scheisskopf!!!

Anyone with the slightest acquaintance with German culture (I'm German-American) can tell this entire audience is absolutely orgasmic with enthusiasm.

  • Sie sind ein Scheisskopf!

How dare you use 'du' with me, are

    you a fag!

You are not an American, you are a

    German who lacks pride!

  • Entschuldigung, bitte, sehr geehrter Herr Scheisskopf. Es sind Arschloecher wie SIE, die muessen immer ueber Nazis reden, die sind ohne Stolz!!

    LMAA!!

  • how do you do how to do to me? i wish i knew...if i knew how you do it for me, i do it for you

  • for those of you wondering this is in 64 on german tv.

  • reminds me of very good childhood memories.

  • So cool to find a great live performance with great audio !!!! Thanks.

  • The audience took sleeping pills or something before this performance. The Zombies did not perform at this show, they were in the audience. C'mon Girls it's rock n roll!

  • It sounds like a record because these guys could flat out play. One of the very best Mersey Beat Groups. Damn they were a treat.

  • I know it's a Live performance, but it sounds very much like the record!

  • No lip-syncing here! Great LIVE performance!

  • What year of this video?

  • I think is 1964

  • absolutely, baby!!!!

  • I always loved these guys. In watching the video, I'm very impressed by Gerry's great guitar work!

  • Most definitely, Gerry was vastly underrated as a guitarist. Great singer too!

  • Looks like Wendy Padbury at 1:15

  • Thanks for the post. Great song.

  • The Wonders were the best group of all time with their hit" Do That Thing You Do"

  • Comment removed

  • Less popular version george harrison

  • Dont think he was very popular, no screaming girls xD

  • So much swag

  • the beatles were orignally supposed to do this song but like both versions alot

  • Wow... another live performance. I always enjoyed Gerry and these guys.. WOW..2 X COOL!

  • If they would have dumped the suits , grown longer hair,,,who knows eh!!

  • like an arrow goin thru it!

  • Saw gerry and the pacemakers at the Stables in Wavendon last night. His voice is as good and as powerfull as ever.Go and see him you wont be disappointed.

  • Yes, his voice is still excellent and it was fun to chat with Gerry and the Pacemakers after the gig. They liked my jokes about all the videos related to them here on YouTube.

  • scousers live in black and white !!!

  • GREAT FRIEND GREAT VIDEOS thanks you

  • I likes the way Gerry curls his lip, I do, at 1:44 then flashes a toothy snarl singing out the balance of "HOW DO YOU DO" with his mates The Pacemakers. As BCC once said "You can not qualify a superlative" period and pointblank!

  • What year is this from?

  • probably in '64 at the tami show.

  • Isn't that the same stage set up as for the Beatles on the Swedish TV programme 'Drop In'? The Beatles did that show around Sept 63 and returned to a growing storm of what became known from that November as 'Beatlemania'.

  • i think this song rocks. i don't think the guy on the left at 1:14 agrees, though

  • Gracias por todo, Gerry!!!

  • What a rockin band!! Love them from their first note!!! Gerry Marsden is great!!! THNKS GERRY!!!!!

  • this was chosen for the beatles first single but they wanted their own song please please me so it was given to gery and the pacemakers. thats how its gone.

  • Is he swallowing gum at 1:30?

  • No just getting the old saliva organized.

  • Beatles rip off? No just a band in the Merseybeat movement, just like the Beatles....

  • Why does it always have to be~~~ US AGAINST THEM! ...???... Life is a SMORGASBORD people! IT'S AAAAAALL GOOD!

  • Hehe indeed, the audience were kinda screaming more when The Beatles performed Please Please me for the first time.

  • LOL! THe girls look very confused in the audience! The Beatles were suppose to record this this when they first signed with George Martin but they hated the song, they thought it too la di da which I think got them off their asses to wrote Please Please me. Looks like they were right judging by the reaction in the audience here.

  • I can think of fewer movements or trends in pop culture of any kind that held the weight and significance of The British Invasion.

It was a true phenomenon...and great, great fun.

  • I bet you the last pound in my pocket that most Brits wish that their cannibalistic football crowds were as enthusiastic as this audience.

  • vraiment bon!

  • Fabulous !

  • he is holding his guitar very high

  • Yeah, that was his trademark.

  • Lennon did the same in the early 60s.

  • In Cyn Lennon book she wrote that the song was written for the Beatles but then they give that song to Gerry and the pacemakers!

  • lovin that drum set

  • the beatles refused to sing this song and to record it as a single, they just recorded a demo at abbey road (which sounds great),and wanted to promote their own songs first, which was very courageous...

"please please me" reached the 2nd rank in the charts, but was their first big Hit,ealier they had good succes with "Love me do"

nice video!!i've always looked for the full version, cause i discovered the extract in "anthology" many years before, and now i've seen it! thanks!

  • Yeah, a rather interesting anecdote ! Although a heavy Beatle fan, I must admit Gerry did it better !

  • love this song

  • Great video and resolution... thanks for posting.

    johnj

  • something makes me think this is the warm up act for a beatles set later n the tape?

  • Boy that crowd is going...crazy there...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • So the legend goes - They (the Beatles) really didn't like the song, but recorded it anyway. It was not released. Instead, they decided to record a new song they just wrote - Please Please Me - their first #1 hit.

  • please please me was not their first number one - from me to you was

please please me was a number 2.

  • In Britain, Please Please Me was their first # 1, after Love Me do who went 17.

  • ya canadian twat! listen to the 16 year old brit, it was from me to you. nice one jcb1691!

  • On Mersey Beat's charts in 1963, "Love me do" was their 1st single, made it to # 17. "Please please me", their 2nd one, made it to # 1. Did my wording sound impolite or rude to you ?

  • @rigaudien You're wrong, and an idiot. Sort yourself out. It did come number one on the NME and Melody Maker charts. But that is being, firstly, purely pedantic and secondly inconsistent. It came number two on the chart that effectively represents the UK singles chart as we now know it. Since you used that chart in reference to Love Me Do, you must maintain consistency and concede that Please Please Me - in accordance with your own terms - came number 2.

  • @jcb21691 Was I so rude to you to be called an idiot ?

  • @rigaudien Probably not but I was right and that's what matters.

Jokes - sorry for the snappy response - have a good life!

  • only comparing them to the beatles as this IS a beatles song, so it is totally up for comparison. being and written and sung by them....

  • please get the facts straight this is NOT a Beatles song it was written by Mitch Murray.

yes the Beatles did a version of it, but this was the hit not the Beatles version.

The Beatles were great and so were the Pacemakers each great in their own right, of course The Beatles were prolific, but that doesn't mean the Pacemakers were not great as well.

But again this is NOT I repeat NOTTTTTTTTT a Beatles written song

  • Right !

  • When Gerry & The Pacemakers hit America in 1964 I was all of fourteen. And I bought every 45 of theirs at "2 Guys From Harrison" in Totowa, NJ and I still have them! This is a perfect POP song. Period and pointblank. Thanks for the post~ francorotini

  • My Pleasure, my friend!!!!!!

I and agree with you 100%, I love all the bands from this era!!

    FR
