At 3:00 Oistrakh changes slur staccatos to spiccato because he was not that good at slur staccato. When you see Oistrakh's Sibelius concerto 3rd movement, he DOES slur staccato but looks hard. However, that kind of small thing COULD NOT stop the king of violinist. He KNEW what was his weakness and HOW to overcome that thing.
DAVID OISTRAKH! YOU ARE MY HERO! YOU ARE OUR KING!
@ModellMeister Not that one can not remedy the insult within your comment, but in music of all places where we can imagine the impossible, you have found a way to no more than insult yourself.
What a sincere tone, and, as mrwasbesonders commented, free of pretentions of the modern violinists. Modern violinist pay attention to technique but not tone where the soul shows.
The best thing about this is he is stock still with none of the pretentious gestures you see from some of the modern greats, Bell, Vengerov, Jansen etc. And doe this take anything from the performance? No, of course not.
If you want precision, cleanliness, and quality of sound on every note there is no one better. Sometimes I find him turgid but he is totally on the money here! Lush.
i love this. this is my fav violin piece and here mr oistrakh has given a most unique and delicate rendition. sl more whimsical a touch slower than many but just magnificent. truly he was one of the greatest
Oistrakh - Munch -Boston. A miracle. I've heard everybody play this piece and have been collecting violin recordings for forty years; I heard Oistrakh any number of times live, but THIS is STUPENDOUS, even for Oistrakh!! I've never heard this piece played like this, NEVER!
He was jewish. Like Heifetz, Stern, Kogan, Menuhin, Vengerov, Szigety, Huberman, Kreisler, Gitlis, Elman...the list could continue, it is unbelievable.

Un jeu moins osé que Heifetz.Très beau, mais parfois trop scrupuleux.

Wow what an interpretation. I though Kogan and Heifetz played this the best, but I think Oistrakh might outshine them here.

This is what I love about Oistrakh,
the way he breaks down a piece and interprets every single note is just so incredibly unique and beautiful.

Wonderful rendition of Saint Saens!!!!!

Up until now, I've thought that Stern's rendition could not be surpassed. I am now having serious second guesses.
ItzhakRoxMySox 2 years ago
L. Kogan has a good rendition too. I like Stern too but sometimes his intonation is wayward.

On all of them the largest violin artist of times ,that his name shows it rather was Hebrew than Gypsy

My favorite recording of this piece. This guy just HAS to be part Gypsy to play like this. Unbelievably GREAT.

Incredible! Such a sound; I still can't get over the wonderful expression, hope, beauty, energy that comes out from his playing!
A real genius yet human (not at all "bizard" like some geniuses can be). Perhaps a perfect combination between the two!
