No one sang this song like Wilbert. This version just rocks. I am a bit younger than a lot of people who love this song, I wasn't even close to being born yet when Mr. Harrison recorded it. It is a shame he is gone. Rest in peace young man!
I lived on Lake Street in Newark in the 70's and I would have loved to meet Wilbert Harrison. For some weird reason, this is my favorite song of all time - no idea why. Maybe because it was one of the first I loved.
I talked to LUPINSKY when the PBS stuff was cranking up and they were trying to get him but it was TOO LATE he passed away. Would have been SO NICE,,SO GREAT had he been on those first shows. TheMojoMan*com
nocaro knows about this one i know.there was a beach music station in charlotte n.c. and one sunday afternoon the dj said wilberts health was failing and if anyone would like to visit him or send him flowers or a car to do so.i went to the nursing home in spencer n.c. and had the blessed privledge to meet mr harrison in person.he was in good spirits and his room was filled with flowers and cards of appriciation.a very sweet and blessed man. very sweet heart felt man.
@SixtiesPopGold where can i find the 50s live performance of this? I can't find it, if you know can ya tell me? Awesome vid, by the way, Thanks for posting.
Kansas City 12th and vine and 18th and vine are going strong. 18th has Negro Baseball Hall of Fame all of the great black baseball players Satchel Page lived here until he died I ment him and his son in 1978 Some famous bars also have musical history with Charlie Parkers Saxophone. Lots of blues and Jazz music come back again we love to have you.
met wilbert in the mid 70s in a bar in newark nj, he and i had a beer and he sang kansas city a few times and he joked around with a light bulb that would light when he put in on peoples heads, today his son wibert harrison jr came in my record store looking for a 45 record of kansas city on fury label, i had one, we listened to it and he rememberd his dad with storys, it was a pleasure meeting him as well as his dad, days like this make me glad i kept my record store open.....
it's interesting too see wilbert lip-synching to his old hit. he doesn't appear to know which camera to look into at first - but he remained cool. i undestand he's buried in charlotte. perhaps i'll make it to the gravesite one day and leave a flower...

First time I saw Wilbert perform his song! I don't care if it came from the 60's. Leiber and Stoller knew how to write!

Killer record and a great-lookin' dude. Sadly, 12th Street and Vine no longer exists. . .but it's still a fine town. . .
