@Malloyism it's beacause of the staging. the idea is that these people were performing the story of alcina. therefre they bring their musicians ont he house and play, etc. so, we are not seing the alcina thing in itself, we are watching "their performance and take" on the opera. hopefully i explained myself, english is not my first language.
@Malloyism although the staging is not in baroque style whatsoever, the colors of the lightning helps to this style a bit. I recomend you to check an opera from lully that the staging is in baroque style like it was on their time, it is SUPERB! it was done by the french (of course) haha. i think the name is : cadmus et harmonie, something like that, check it out, is really fantastic.
orchestral soloists intermingling onstage. was that usual practise in the period? Maybe its simply a minkowski genius move.
