I just heave a sigh of amazement. Marvellous! It's a colossal work playing Brahms when you're up in years and Menuhin does it very well, forget the critics. Older violinist are also Ida Haendel, George Enescu, Fritz Kreisler. They are all there on youtube to enjoy. Now, Menuhin has been gone for some 11 years. It's good to have this legacy of him. Thanks.

Menuhin was technically insufficient. In his early years he was brilliant, but around the age of 20 he lost his abilitys. From there on, he was just a middle class violinist who celebrated his "Wunderkind" Image.
Do not argue. Both Heifetz and Menuhin have to be considered to be among the very greatest violinsts of all time. Its just matter of preference really. Have your own opinion but for god's sake respect these figures. That's what they truly deserve. And when you listen to them sometimes thank that you have the opportunity to hear someone as extraordinary as them. Thank you. Enjoy the music :)
youre right, i like heifetz so much, too. maybe they couldn't be as good as they were young, but they are all masters for they considered violin perfomance as their lifetime job, that's much more important than anything else.
@dontcallmefornothing I heard Menuhin live when I was a teenager in New York. He played this piece. As good as this is, he managed to stop time or alter it, as soon as he started playing. When he was in "the zone" he was incomparable.
i know if menuhin's body hadn't got problem, his performance isn't like that bad. watch other earlier vids on youtube, you will know he could do better than heifetz on skills.
Yeah, Yehudi has always been my favorite of them all. Heifetz is awesome as was Stern and is Perlman. But when I heard Yehudi's early Beethoven violin concerto I was blown of the planet....ya...it was a remarable life of musical gift to the world and to his students....
If I have a violin. And you have a violin. And I have a bow, there it is, that's a bow. Are you watching? And my bow reaches acrooooooooss the room, and starts to play your violin, I PLAY YOUR VIOLIN!!! I PLAY IT UP!!!
cause i've been looking for his performance with berliner philharmoniker during his later years, i think this one sounds familiar. I thought that was the best rendition of brahms yet.
i hope u will upload the first movement, i beg of you
Violin playing isn't a technical contest. If it were, Heifetz would win. Brahms is not only technically exacting, but an even a greater challenge, musically. I've never heard this concerto played as uniquely as this. Listen to the slight hesitation at 0:05 The flying spicato near the frog at 0:27. Look at the full bowing at 1:22 & 3:58 & 6:28. This style of bowing produces sounds bordering upon vulgarity. I prefer this definitive performance over Menuhin's earlier recordings, or any other.
@unclejuniorsoprano Heifetz the technical supremo??? Have you never heard Vasa Prihoda? Before WW2 Prihoda was widely regarded as the supreme technician, Heifetz admiting that he was jealous of Prihoda's skill. Prihoda was vilified after the war for not boycotting Nazi occupied countries and for not helping his wife Alma Rose, who died in Auschwitz. Vasa claimed he didn't know she was there.Alma was jewish, as was his second wife, so it's hard to see how he could be called anti - semitic.
PEOPLE INSTEAD OF USING COMMENTS WITH BAD LANGUAGE TO SAY THE LEAST SHOULD GO BEYONG TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES AND HEARING THE MUSICAL PHRASING AND WHAT MENUHIN IS GIVING TO NOTES AND STYLE !
this is not bad played or something.... this is an epic musical performance! music is NOT about faults and wrong notes and fast tempo! listen to this energy, this is a man who would blow you all off the stage if he wouldn't be as gentle and friendly as he was!
Indeed, by this time he was visibly shaking-it is incredible that he was able to retain this much control of the bow. A superbly passionate and individual player all of his life,he is sadly missed.
Goodness, you all seem to have overpampered ears. The recording is horrible, but the musicmaking is superior to most brahms concerto's I've ever heard.
dude menuhin's early recordings make heifetz look like a chump. i'm not kidding. some of the most unbelievable talent ever to grace this planet. we're all average suckers. i'm sure menuhin's playing a lot slower in this third mvmt than in the first. his fingers must be aching, his ear's probably dull, his wits aren't as sharp as before...
because he's 80 fucking years old!!! most people shit their pants and nothing more at that age. come on
@poseuresque You are the dumbest guy on YouTube. This video was recorded in 1983 & Menuhin was born in 1916, so how does that make him 80 years old? You rode the short bus to school.
As for making Heifetz "look like a chump," you're an idiot & would never be able to comprehend any intelligent answer. Heifetz's was the highest paid musician, according his union dues & had no peer.
You know 0 about Classical music & even less about the violin. You'd be better off commenting on the Sex Pistols.
@shiveringflower Vasa Prihoda's technique was indeed as good as it gets, but it takes a lot more than pyrotechniques to become a Jascha Heifetz. Jim Svejda once featured him on the "Record Shelf" noting that his downfall was in having a name nobody could pronounce. Isaac Stern listed Heifetz as 1 of the top 5 violinists in history. Vasa Prihoda didn't even make the top 10, although I certainly would have put him there. Where did Heifetz comment on VP's playing? Heifetz never commented on anyone.
@unclejuniorsoprano Heifetz did indeed make comments about other violinists. For example, he once said that Igor Oistrakh's playing would be better if he used a heavier bow; I think that this is mentioned in the Victor Juseovich biography of David Oistrach Prihodah had much more than technique to offer, his tone production is excellent - if sometimes over lush. I will try and find the source of the 'jealous' remark - i know i haven't imagined it :)
@shiveringflower Both Sherry Kloss & Ayke Agus studied with Heifetz for the last 15 years of his life & stated that he never commented on any other violinist. Elman was jealously shocked when 12 yr-old Michael Rabin told him that his ambition in life was to play like Heifetz. I would have love to know Heifetz's opinion of both Prihoda & Rabin. As for my favorite, it all depends on the music. For Brahms, this video is superior to any other performance I have seen or heard for its spiccato bowing.
@unclejuniorsoprano So, are you calling David Oistrakh a liar?David Oistrakh and Heifetz played for each other in private, on one of these occasions Heifetz listened to Igor and commented on his bow.It was David Oistrakh who said this, not me. One thing we do agree on is the magnificence of this recording.Dear Yehudi will always be my favourite, for most pieces.
@shiveringflower I don't know about this case, but most Russians are liars; part of survival. I NEVER heard of Oistrakh & Heifetz playing for each other. I do know that when Oistrakh died, Heifetz announced to his Master class that he was a "great" violinist, but added nothing more than that. As for suggesting that Igor use a heavier bow, that's hardly a value judgment. I don't even know if it's true. Don't believe anything Herbert Axelrod ever wrote, if that's where your source comes from.
@shiveringflower Since we're on the subject of Heifetz, here are some interesting facts: he spoke 5 languages fluently; he was also a virtuoso on the viola; he was capable of playing the Beethoven piano sonatas; he was able to sight read any work & retain it in memory afterwords; he was the sole breadwinner for his family starting at age 7; after defecting to the U.S., he loathed the USSR until the day he died; he was embarrassed by his lack of formal education & refused all honorary degrees.
@shiveringflower As for Menuhin, he was the most famous of all child prodigies & suffered socially, but not nearly to the degree of Heifetz. His sister Hephzibah was said to have been equally talented as a pianist, but the primary focus was on Yehudi because he was male. He had 1 lesson with Ysaye & had difficulty playing arpeggios over 4 octaves because he focused mainly on concerti rather than scale studies & etudes.
Menuhin plays this concerto in a most unique way. Great frog music!
@shiveringflower You make no sense at all. Michael Jackson was a bigger concert attraction than both John McCormack AND Jascha Heifetz, so what does that prove?
@shiveringflower You, yourself said that Heifetz was the highest paid musician, my reply simply points out that McCormack put more bums on seats than any other pre-war artist - to me this is a truer measure of greatness than how much you get paid. It is your comment about Jackson that makes no sense
@poseuresque Menuhin was a fine violinist but let's not try to compare him with Heifetz; the silliness of that comparison just detracts from Menuhin's own abilities
@poseuresque I think Menuhin is among the best 5 violinists to ever walk the earth, but I disagree with your statement about Heifetz. The fantastic technique of Heifetz is surpassed by no violinist I've ever heard play.
Menuhin is the only one who has made better recordings of some specific pierces here on Youtube.
What I also find remarkable is that Heifetz playing didn't suffer much from his age. Just look up the video of him playing the rondo of Mozart and you'll see.
Yes, I agree XxKubrickFanxX, thanks for your amplification ....his age in this case doesn't ad up with the Brahms' violin concerto. My comment was meant to be a tribute to Menuhin. According to my humble opinion he was one of a kind and always will be.
This is Menuhin all right. Can still hear the Menuhin style. Menuhin is Menuhin.....young or old. A great great violinist with compassion playing music rather than playing the violin.
I am not a pro violinist but Menuhin has never done it for me. Granted he was famous for a reason, but his playing sounds highly uncontrolled and I dont know what is going on with the opening and main first theme to this beautiful concerto. I recommend listening to Hilary Hahn's version or Heifitz. Both are refined and a lot more precise. Again, no disrespect to Menuhin, but this is not what Brahms intended.
You're far to indulgent or charitable. This is an absolute mess - total loss of control. I don't know what was wrong with him that day. I suspect that the orchestra was also incabable of supporting him.
xd hilary hahn is great, but menuhin...man he was playing 3 concertos in 3 different concert halls in one night ,at the age of 8...and not easy ones, beethoven concerto, brahms concerto...no one can be better than him I think (in my opinion)
Perhaps, in a documentary of the menu inn which I watched before, the part that played Gstaad with chaconne was televised. The missing figure is too splendid, and all songs want to watch all souls; when wanted to listen, felt it. Will it be the thing which you cannot do anything about?
An Old Master is still a Master. Hats off to Yehudi! I hope I can play as well at that age. A great player and teacher, much like my teacher was. I love him!!!
hi! i read all the comments here. could somebody tell me what exactly is "sloppy" about this performance? I am just curious. I did not find anything sloppy in it. please clarify. thank you.
The comments possibly mean the right hand. I mean he didn't have a calm hand at the frog after the age of maybe 28. So you will hardly see him move the bow slowly at the at the frog. Seems like he wants to get away from that area and he sometimes smashes the bow on the strings. It doesn't matter, his sound is still great.
I dislike the video cos its just 9 minutes

Think about you are around seventy or eighty, standing and playing very complicated piece and need a lot of movement for over 40 minutes!!!

Hello.
I am a Japanese menu in fan.
Perhaps, in a documentary of the menu inn which I watched before, the part that played Gstaad with chaconne was televised. The missing figure is too splendid, and all songs want to watch all souls; when wanted to listen, felt it. Will it be the thing which you cannot do anything about?
I do not get off with clumsy English.

I was impressed to listen to menu in and Brahms of Masur.
I think that work is busy, but please upload it by all means if I have 1.2 movements.
Finally I do not get off with poor English.

his is great. but i feel he dint do justice to this peice. but I still applaud him for playing so well even at that age.

An Old Master is still a Master. Hats off to Yehudi! I hope I can play as well at that age. A great player and teacher, much like my teacher was. I love him!!!

hi! i read all the comments here. could somebody tell me what exactly is "sloppy" about this performance? I am just curious. I did not find anything sloppy in it. please clarify. thank you.
ymenuhin 3 years ago
The comments possibly mean the right hand. I mean he didn't have a calm hand at the frog after the age of maybe 28. So you will hardly see him move the bow slowly at the at the frog. Seems like he wants to get away from that area and he sometimes smashes the bow on the strings. It doesn't matter, his sound is still great.

Grateful for the clarification, ''MarlowStardust''. Sorry, I couldn't respond earlier. Are you a violinist?
ymenuhin 3 years ago
Yes some sort of violinist, who thinks it to be better to stop playing to avoid more physical pain caused by several strong deformations.
But my teacher was Boris Kucharsky ex-Menuhin, ex-Friedman, ex-Ozim student, so I know a lot about the old generation.
And you?

Sometimes one guy's sloppiness worth more than another guy's perfection. :)
