Talk about sacred geometry.. totally awesome.. I seen some Maya y Aztec symbolism in there... designs, etc.. maybe they got some of their immigrant through manipulating sound waves? God bless you all.. praise His name and His designs.
thanks for the comment - I have a 12 minute piece coming out on the Critical Mass:Kinetica DVD in january - check out ebay seller threshold-studios for that and other video art on DVD
Haven't any of you ever pointed a camera that was hooked up to a monitor at the monitor it was hooked up to? You will see and image like a hall of mirrors, if you zoom in you begin to get these interference patterns and the spiral effect. Here it looks like half the screen is mirrored digitaly.
It's why certain types of music creates harmony and other types make you want to go crazy. For instance, take heavy metal, not very harmonic, but take something like classical music and your body becomes relaxed and able to think more.
shit!!!!!!!! creeeeepy!!! really cool, but the music w/ the weird noises, itls like close encounters!!!!!!!!! CCCCCCCCCCCCRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Coool! But try it yourself. It's just video feedback: aiming your camera at the video monitor.
But for fractals you need a mirror too. Hold a mirror perpendicular to the video screen, then aim your camera at the spot where mirror touches screen.
12" mirror tiles are available from Home Depot, Fred Meyer, etc. Or get scraps of plastic mirror from Tap Plastics store.
you might want to consider introducing physical objects, people or a signal from another source into the loop - check out phasia on this channel for instance.
None of the videos on this site use mirrors tho'.

Flipping the video into a mirror-image, then adding it back to the feedback path, that's certainly a virtual mirror.
Real mirrors work too, so these feedback shapes can be produced by anyone, purely with a mirror and a camera. They instantly produce this kidney/tree/broccoli/cauliflower style of affine fractal.
I had one of these mirror/camera feeback setups at MOS Boston in 1988, and a photo of the fractal is in the book TURBULENT MIRROR
Stick your hand in the path, so you'll have an infinite number of fingers. Ford Prefect, try using monkeys.
Oh, here's something from 1988 I never got around to trying. Ferns are affine fractals (made of mirroring/rotations/translations.) It should be possible to create a fractal fern using a large vertical mirror, plus a single small rectangular mirror positioned to create the first side-branch, and oriented so it reflects an image of the main 'infinite tunnel'
Ah, here's something from 1988 I never had time to try: fractal video ferns.
Fern fractals are affine (made only from mirrorings/rotations/translations,) so it shouldn't be hard to produce a fern. You'd need one large vertical mirror, plus a small rectangular mirror. Position the small one so it forms the first side-branch of the fern, and aim it so it reflects an image of the main 'infinite tunnel.'
Julia sets, formed from stretched mylar mirrors, now that would be a real challenge.
Sometimes after meditating I see things like this all over the place for a short time. Tessellations of reality, layer after layer exposing itself, but not completely
anyone can set up a feedback loop - its having the control over how the image morphs that's hard. The balance between coherence and chaos lies within very narrow parameters
Not to say I dont appreciate it now. but when I did it back then I saw it as my own personal discovery. I would sit there for hours and play with it. Now people are making art with it. I honestly could be a millionaire now, but I guess I took what I was doing for granted.
Though, Id like to know what you are using to make it.
The speed of change in the image is often determined by the frame rate or, more importantly, the field rate of the video source (2 fields per frame, 25 frames per second). To slow down the rate of change one must manipulate the image in such a way that this also dramatically changes the kind of image you create. These images are created in real time by responding to minute changes in the intraference field that has been generated by the equipment. No software is used.
that was amazing. I can feel my whole body vibrate in resonance. It is so satisfying to see the visual representation of the fractal nature of reality. Great work.
thansk for the comment - Actually I have written an article describing this as an extention of brakhage's search for a language of light to convey our hypnogogic experience of moving visual thinking - I was lucky enough to meet brakhage in 1990 and talk to him about his work. The article isn't online, but if you're interested give me your email and I'll send you the file.

Great video, should be uploaded in better quality though. I've done feedback work too but I like the approach taken here.

this was made with just a domestic camcorder and a tv, then a little editing to cut down 25minutes of stuff into five minutes.
