In Dracula, Dracula himself could be in the sunlight. It wasn't until the German movie Nosferatu that vampires not being able to withstand sunlight came to be. This was because Nosferatu was a blatant rip off of Dracula and to not get sued they had to change something, so they did that and changed some names.
