Bacteria evolved from simple self replicating molecules. The earth has been filled with simple chemical compounds since it formed it was never a question as to whether a self replicating molecule would ever spontaneously develop but when. The Earth was lifeless for billions of years until billions of molecules bumping around in the primordial soup eventually accidentally combined to form at least one molecule that had the distinct property of self replication.

All you need is one replicating molecule and evolution does the rest. It is impossible for anything to replicate itself perfectly, so any copy of itself that was not as good as its "parent" molecule would end up being less plentiful in the molecule population, and vice versa.

But I'm glad you mentioned piltdown man. Originally it was assumed to be genuine but suspicion arose when it didn't fit in with the abundance of hominid fossils being found in Africa. When radionuclide dating was developed, scientists dated various parts of the fossil and discovered the hoax.

1. Peer-review works and is a necessary part of science. (so quit whining about it)

2. Science is self correcting. Old ideas are tested with new methods in an attempt to falsify them.

3. Radionuclide dating works. It worked on piltdown, it works for the earth.

4. When evidence is contradictory (like with piltdown) you know there's a problem.

Nope. Average cranial capacity is lower and they exhibit thick brow ridges. But they are indeed very close to modern humans. Understandable since they lived only ~500-300 thousand years ago.

Wrong again. Analysis of neanderthal DNA has shown them to be a distinct species from modern humans.

Their morphological differences also cannot be attributed to any diseases such as rickets, despite wild creationist assertions. Just because rev. hovind says so doesn't mean it is so.

Wrong. The bowl shape of the pelvis is very human-like and adapted for bipedal locomotion. Compare it to that of a chimpanzee and you will see the obvious difference.

Also, the femur was curved inward which is also important for bipedalism.

In simplest terms, they died out. Our closest relative it is believed was Neanderthal man, who shared a common ancestor with us, homo sapiens, but became extinct at the time H. Sapiens flourished. It's the same reason giant pandas might disappear. Different version of a bear, evolved to survive in a particular niche, but now may become extinct as its environment is under threat. Many species don't survive, some do. H sapiens did, perhaps pandas won't.

There is a massive fossil index that catalogs all of the hominid species that have been found to have existed between our ape like ancestors and our current selves (as well as all of the hominid species that have existed that aren't a direct part of our lineage). If you are really interested in reading about them any respectable human evolution text book will cover them.

As for the reason as to why all of the intermediate forms between our ape ancestors and us aren't walking the earth along beside us. Technically... they are, we are them. Evolution is usually a very slow and continuous acquisition of improved adaptations to the environment.

To keep it simple, just say in order for our ancestors to get food they had to be able to perform a complex sequence of steps, the individuals who couldn't complete these complex steps might not be able to eat and would die (and therefor not pass on their genes). Where as the individuals who could perform this complex sequence would be more likely to survive and pass on their genes. Obviously anyone who was even better adapted would do even better and so on. rinse and repeat a million times &...
