The North was fighting for their homeland, to reunite the two vietnams after 30 years of foreign occuapation by the japs, the french, and now the USA. Actually as a Military Historian and Theoretical Tactics Analyst I can say with authority that the US were the sole party out of the three main participants of the Vietnam War to fail all their key objectives. The US set out to prevent the spread of communism, keep the North and South divided, and to set up a puppet government in the South; they didn't accomplish any of this, where as the North and their Communist supporters succeeding in establishing a communist regime in a united Vietnam.

This film is based on facts, of which Mel Gibson (directer of this film.) talked to the actual Lt. col Hal Moore and learned of the battle and what happened during the battle.
