This is definitely real. And yeah, NEVER stand under a tree during a thunderstorm! That's the absolute worst place to be. The safest place to be during a thunderstorm is indoors. If you're outside, the next safest place would be in a car. The metal body on a car forms a Faraday Cage and if it's hit by lightning, the current will be conducted around the outside of the body and then goes to ground. The current will not pass through the inside and you will be safe.

@TheGurdianOfDeath Thunder is a result of the electrons in the clouds rubbing together. The closer the strike the shorter the time until you hear thunder. But if lightning strikes in very close proximity to you, there is no rumble all you hear is the incredibly loud 'explosion' of thunder.
