I think Eric Peel is one heck of a composer. This is one of my favorites. But I am most dissapointed with the vibraphone player. You NEVER use arm with ANYTHING pertaining to mallets. The beginning was astounding with your mega arm movements.
But the rest of the ensemble is very talented, I'd say this is a fairly difficult piece.
The vibes player isn't a percussionist, he specializes in brass, but can play many other instruments as well. This was really his first time playing vibes, I needed him for the spot and he agreed to make it an experience and had a good time.
And I wouldn't say you NEVER use arm with mallet instruments. There are hundreds of techniques out there and many use the benefits of adding a little arm. Whoever told you to NEVER use arm is being a little bit too close-minded.
@reeldeelpeel I didn't exactly mean never user arm. Because of course you would need arm to get some of those higher dynamics. I'm just saying that the whole forward and backward swing in the very beginning is a little much don't you think. But since he is very new to the instrument then I can say that I used to do the exact same thing he did. The fact that he can play a song as challenging as this is pretty impressive.
I am a percussionist and I love percussion ensemble so I was just searching different stuff out here and I came across this and omg I can't get enough I love it good work!!
feeling ever!!!!! i dont think it matters what jerky critics think, i think what matters is the dedication involved and the companionship with your mates and just the love of music and the people you play with! Most importantly, i believe it's about expressing yourself and releasing feelings you couldnt normally do on a daily basis. i think i've rambled enough.Thank you Eric, your pieces get me excited to start the day practicing with val and the need to get better, you're an amazing composer.
need to get better! im just a sophomore and i strive to get better at playing the insane sixteen note 220 BPM runs that Valerie and other can that i cant. I just love music in itself and i lvoe even more so playing it with the people you love most, shit, our drumline and probably a whole lotta other lines are like effin family. my pitmate valerie is like the sister i never had, and the feeling that i play alongside her in this amazing compositions, whether we do good or not, is the most amazing
i love this piece, i could watch it all day. i have to say THANK YOU to you guys talking about the encouragment and helpin bring real music to this world! I don't get why cocky pricks need to demean musicians just cus they cant play something. Shit im play for SHS in vancouver and im proud of it. not cus we're good , i leave that up to the people who honor us to see us to decide, but because A; i LOVE playing music like the piece above! It fills me with just happiness and enthuisiasm and the
Hey thanks alot for the advice and the comments we really appreciate it. I am going to be the section leader for the Valencia high school drumline next year and I was wondering if you had any more cadences because I really appreciate your work and I love all of your peices that I've heard so far ! Thank you again so much
Hey would you mind checking out how we played this song. It's under escaping a nightmare by VHS percussion ensemble. It needs a little work but we put it together in about three weeks from when brokenmexican Bought it from you. Thanks
few tips when you want to make a video... dont use a shitty camera that isn't meant to record sound, and don't put the gay kid on the end that is going to be dancing to the beat while everyone else is being serious
1. Nobody "made a video". One of the performer's parents RECORDED A PERFORMANCE.
2. There wasn't time to set up recording equipment, what do you mean the camera isn't designed to record sound!? Do you not hear anything!? It was LOUD in a small room, it wasn't an auditorium with acoustics or anything even close!
3. DO NOT use the term "gay" to insult someone! And do not insult any of MY ensemblists ever again!
4. He (the vibraphonist) isn't "dancing". It's called EXPRESSION, and it's encouraged.
I have to say that this performance denounces the writing ability of Mr. Peel and the appeal of his piece.I understand this may be early in its process but it has a long way till it will sound like his literature.Good job and kudos for trying such as piece! Sorry if I sound like (sliksteezz) he is ignorant.
These aren't by any means experienced percussionists. This was the first time most of them have played in any kind of percussion-only group and for most, it was the most serious they've ever been pushed to be. I bow to them for making it this far in under a month and under the previously stated circumstances!
I do appreciate your constructive criticism, unlike the idiot below. :)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What is this garbage? This is John V. Wilson from Columbia University and i just wanted to tell you how disappointed i am in what an awful piece you are making these poor kids play. Don't you have better things to do? If i were these kids i would just save myself the embarrassment and never play this ridiculous waste of space ever again.
This is Eric C. W. Peel from Cascades Drum and Bugle Corps, and I just wanted to tell you that you are an IDIOT.
"Garbage"!?? Tell it to my face!!
"Poor kids"!?? I went to the same high school as these musicians and every single one of them would tell you I've made the percussion section so much more fun and productive!
They made STATE you old fart!!
The little audience they had LOVED the piece! many came to me afterwards and recommended publishing companies and gave me encouragement!
YES, my writing style is very different from what typically gets played at solo and ensemble competitions, but different does not mean "awful"! Everyone who I have ever had listen to my music has told me they would much rather hear it played live than any of the traditional pieces that are normally played at these events. So maybe you should take into consideration that the players aren't perfect, it was a month of practice all together, and the mic on the camera sucked.
If I were you, I would give a 19 year old novice composer and educator some ENCOURAGEMENT rather than just flat our being a total asshole! What the hell is your fucking problem!?!?! Don't you want to HELP this struggling generation of music rather than throw it away?? I can't imagine feeling satisfied after posting a comment like you did, that's unbelievable, you need to be fired! Ha, I'm sure that's not the first time you've heard someone say that!
I just wanted to shout out again and thank all who stood up for me and this group against those like sliksteezz. He, particularly, obviously has had nothing to say to defend himself in the last couple years and the comments defending me and all the thumbs up really means a lot and it's very powerful against the negativity. This just proves there's power in numbers and there really are still large groups of sensible people out there that want to better the world. Thanks so much and keep it up.
No musician on this planet should ever discourage the learning chance these kids got to learn and play in a group. While I am sure it could use work these kids had fun.
Anyway Columbia is not a well known music school get a life sliksteezz
Why can't you be cool like Dave Macklovitch? Here we see kids blessed by the enthusiasm and dedication of a more experienced musician who is expanding both his and their musical horizons. If I had the opportunity to go back and have that experience, I would take it. You just don't realize how much of a luxury having an involved instructor is- too many kids have no chances like this at all. As for Mr. Peel, have some grace when dealing with harsh critics, you are clearly in the right here.
@sliksteezz If I was your student, I would be embarrassed and ashamed. Hey, I spot some garbage over there. His name is John V. Wilson.
Hey, kids, you actually were excellent. Keep on working towards a greater goal in competition, if that is what you are interested in. Gorgeous work. :)
Which instrument are you playing in this video, Eric?
spdyvkng 9 months ago
@spdyvkng I wrote the piece and taught the students. At the time, I was a year out of high school.

Wonderful! Too bad the camera audio is a bit murky and the mic too close to some instruments.
But we enjoyed it, my one year old and me. She's playing along on the table. I'll test on my two year old, and see if she can find the rhytm :)

You'll always have critics, don't even worry about it.
As a percussionist I would love to play this!
the sound quality doesn't do it justice.
I really enjoyed it!
great job
The only thing i would say is that at 1:02 it feels empty.. maybe some very low bells or bass roll?
Great piece! and for a month of practice it's an impressive ensemble =)
