By saying a full grown man you give the image of someone in their 30's/40's where the man in question is a soldier who's age is between 18 and 21. If you look at age difference there at a maximum its 9 years, at a minimum 5, and i know many people who are married to someone 5/10/15/20/25 years older than them, its not as bad as you make it sound.

While they were certainly very close, there was also a huge distance between them in terms of maturity, communication and physically (he could have suffered serious damage in the physical part of the relationship). However, unlike the novel, the movie suggests no lasting damage and he comes out of it enriched.

A student counsellor is like a priest; he may never talk about what he is asked or told in a counselling session. But I can tell you this. We have a problem with human rights, right here and now in many societies. Boys (less so girls) who form deep emotional attachments to other boys, due to cirmstances or their genetic makeup (who knows why) are very frequently bullied sometimes to the point of suicide. This is a true story (read the book) and one may agree or disagree with what took place but this vulnerable child at least became aware without shame of growing sexuality and its direction. Thus may trouble and disgust some but from the point of view of the child it was an important and iconic incident in his life. I do not absolve the soldier from guilt..
These comments raise an important question: What do we do about young gays , boys or girls and the hatred that a minority f people express towards them. Sometimes this stems from religion and yet religion is supposed to teach us to love one another, This hatred often results in maiming or even murder of young gays. It is not inlikely some the hateful comments come from people who commit these crimes. As a school counsellor I am only too aware of this problem.

I'm 25 now, and I have plenty of luck with young men around my age, but I can just tell that I'm gonna be one of the creepy old dudes that likes young boys when I'm 40-50. @xysig If you read the novel you will find how different reality and movies are. In the novel the soldier is exploitative and it is very hard to find any real love the soldier has for Jeroen. No one argued it was abuse when it happened because Jeroen kept it a secret for various reasons and increasingly became alienated from everyone else around him. The novel is divided into 3 sections which i call: 1) moving to shithole & lonliness, 2) Abuse by Walt, 3) Trauma.
I've seen this movie and the 12 year old boy in this film is beautiful. I could see how the soldier fell in love with him. I did. A child that age can certainly enjoy sex, though I think anal sex is a bit over the top in this case.

Thanks for speaking up. I saw this film a couple times and excused it until my conscious came to call. While the actor is very handsome and friendly, he is a pedophile, and only by presenting the story in a film can it be made "nice" and "touching." The reality is one of exploitation, sexual stunting, the generation of addictions, and perpetuation of the same deeds. For A Lost Soldier is an excellent movie, and if the bed scene disgusts you, then why are you even bringing it up in the first place? Love is love, plain and simple, regardless of age. The former child actor's parents were also on the set of the movie (they were behind the scenes) and they didn't have any problems with the bed scene at all.
My mom's best friend was one of the camera assistants on the set (who has retired), and while filming was going on, he was recording the behind-the-scene footage at the same time and was able to capture at least 2 1/2 hours of it. He provided me with the videotape of it and I promised him I wouldn't make duplicates or distribute it to anyone (this is NOT available on the Internet or elsewhere). He knew I was a sucker for behind-the-scenes footage and this was my birthday present from him :-)
In addition, on the videotape, the former child actor's parents said in the interview that they were a little nervous of the bed scene at first, but after the scene choreography they went over and after watching it, they were more comfortable with the scene.

In the story, the soldier is 19, the boy is 12/ or 13, so basically, they're a teenager couples unaware of the consent age for having a sexual intercourse. So, take the story by the legal or psychological view, it is not pedophilia and can be accepted. Plus, you have to take art in a very different way. The boy, later as an adult, told the story and admitted that (or it's implied in the story that) he was in love with the soldier and happy with the relationship. In law force, some people may put it into the statutory rape case, but there is Romeo and Juliet laws, stating that where the couple's age difference is minor and the sexual contact is only considered rape because of the lack of legally-recognized consent, the penalty can be eliminated.

I don't think people are seeing how disgustingly beautiful this is.
It's god awful that a twelve year old child is having sexual relations with a grown man. A twelve year old is hopefully just realizing what the act of sex is.
But it's so blindingly beautiful that one so young can fall so deeply in love with someone, rather it be a man or woman.
There are so many wrongs with this story, it's confusing to decide so quickly if it's wrong or no if you are ever able to reach such a decision.

This movie is an important historic archive of the reality of war. We all hear so much of the women who fell in love with foreign soldiers, but our 'pc' society and it's femenazis always ignore the true facts of man/Boy love. Clearly throughout the second world war as with every preceeding war, Boys fell in love with soldiers and persued sexual liasons.

By saying a full grown man you give the image of someone in their 30's/40's where the man in question is a soldier who's age is between 18 and 21. The same goes for you saying a little boy, you're giving the image of a very very young boy, where the boy in question is actually about 12/13. If you look at age difference there at a maximum its 9 years, at a minimum 5, and i know many people who are married to someone 5/10/15/20/25 years older than them, its not as bad as you make it sound.

@DWMC93 While a 10-15 year age difference in married couples is not that uncommon, at that stage in their life even the 6-7 year difference is infinitely more significant. While they were certainly very close, there was also a huge distance between them in terms of maturity, communication and physically (he could have suffered serious damage in the physical part of the relationship). However, unlike the novel, the movie suggests no lasting damage and he comes out of it enriched.

A student counsellor is like a priest; he may never talk about what he is asked or told in a counselling session. But I can tell you this. We have a problem with human rights, right here and now in many societies. Boys (less so girls) who form deep emotional attachments to other boys, due to cirmstances or their genetic makeup (who knows why) are very frequently bullied sometimes to the point of suicide. These young gay boys must be helped to undersrand what is going on with them............

@ifuliki I believe this is to be an important movie and should be shown perhaps to a limited audience and be followed by discussion. This is a true story (read the book) and one may agree or disagree with what took place but this vulnerable child at least became aware without shame of growing sexuality and its direction. Thus may trouble and disgust some but from the point of view of the child it was an important and iconic incident in his life. I do not absolve the soldier from guilt..

These comments raise an important question: What do we do about young gays , boys or girls and the hatred that a minority f people express towards them. Sometimes this stems from religion and yet religion is supposed to teach us to love one another, This hatred often results in maiming or even murder of young gays. It is not inlikely some the hateful comments come from people who commit these crimes. As a school counsellor I am only too aware of this problem.

I don´t think that in reality the boys experiences where that romatic at all. I also know that "romances" like this can happen in real life without doing any harm to anyone. I'm 25 now, and I have plenty of luck with young men around my age, but I can just tell that I'm gonna be one of the creepy old dudes that likes young boys when I'm 40-50. @xysig If you read the novel you will find how different reality and movies are. In the novel the soldier is exploitative and it is very hard to find any real love the soldier has for Jeroen. No one argued it was abuse when it happened because Jeroen kept it a secret for various reasons and increasingly became alienated from everyone else around him. The novel is divided into 3 sections which i call: 1) moving to shithole & lonliness, 2) Abuse by Walt, 3) Trauma.

While the actor is very handsome and friendly, he is a pedophile, and only by presenting the story in a film can it be made "nice" and "touching." For A Lost Soldier is an excellent movie, and if the bed scene disgusts you, then why are you even bringing it up in the first place? Love is love, plain and simple, regardless of age. The former child actor's parents were also on the set of the movie (they were behind the scenes) and they didn't have any problems with the bed scene at all.

My mom's best friend was one of the camera assistants on the set (who has retired), and while filming was going on, he was recording the behind-the-scene footage at the same time and was able to capture at least 2 1/2 hours of it. He provided me with the videotape of it and I promised him I wouldn't make duplicates or distribute it to anyone (this is NOT available on the Internet or elsewhere). He knew I was a sucker for behind-the-scenes footage and this was my birthday present from him :-)

In addition, on the videotape, the former child actor's parents said in the interview that they were a little nervous of the bed scene at first, but after the scene choreography they went over and after watching it, they were more comfortable with the scene.

I think its a great movie and better love story, I'm studing teatre and its one of my favorites stories. And the book its even better. anyway, if a boy love a man it does matter? we are talking about the happiness of two guys who really love each other, there is not abuse, I think its beautifull, my ex girlfriend is 10 years older than me... it does matter? I think no.

For a lost soldier is a good film. Those who see some pervert thing are themselves pervert. This is a wonderfull story and every man has something like that in their souvenirs (or they wished it).

In the story, the soldier is 19, the boy is 12/ or 13, so basically, they're a teenager couples unaware of the consent age for having a sexual intercourse. So, take the story by the legal or psychological view, it is not pedophilia and can be accepted. Plus, you have to take art in a very different way. Plato praised man-boy love, and in many ancient culture like Greek's, Japanese's, Arab's (read 1001 nights/ Scheherazade to see), man-boy relationship is actually appreciated. What about that?

This is also not a child sexual abuse case. The boy, later as an adult, told the story and admitted that (or it's implied in the story that) he was in love with the soldier and happy with the relationship. In law force, some people may put it into the statutory rape case, but there is Romeo and Juliet laws, stating that where the couple's age difference is minor and the sexual contact is only considered rape because of the lack of legally-recognized consent, the penalty can be eliminated.

This is really dumb. This is not pedophilia, for sure. It can only be called pederasty for all it means. Psychologically, pedophilia is a disorder when an adult experiences a sexual preference for prepubescent children. In this movie, no one can tell if the soldier is attracted to kids only, OR he's just attracted to the boy.Secondly, the boy is not prepubescent, he's going through his prubescence and was showing interest in his same sex friend in a sexual way. This relationship is mutual.

I have to laugh at the pathetic idiot who's viewed every posting of every clip of this movie on YT to watch again and again the scenes of a movie that repulse him. He must enjoy things "to vomit to." If he bothered to read the comments, he'd see that the majority of people watching these clips are relating more to the 12 yr.old character (the POINT of the film, BTW). This is a wonderful love story. All kids become sexually interested at a certain age. What they choose as their outlets should not make them feel ashamed. Thats why we have so many messed up people in this world today. If loving was the genesis of what each character felt than both benefitted. I know, I had such an encounter when I was 12 with a man I loved very much and am richer for the experience.

This movie is based on a autobiographycal novel by a dutch author. This was what happened to him during the war and the liberation.
Here (the Netherlands) the book counts as literature and we're are allowed to read it as part of our exams... as did I.
I think it's a wonderful lovestory. Don't be to quick to judge just on the age of the people involved.
And no I'm not a men in love with a younger boy, trying to justify my own feelings or actions.
Just a girl and not in love.

Actually, pedophillia is classified as having sexual feelings towards pre-pubescent children. There's another name for those who are attracted to teenagers. I think this is different to other cases, see the boy looks actually comfortable and at ease, like he really does care for the man. I may not really agree but love is love.
