There are many more analog recordings going on than Billy estimates, if the Smashing Pumkins had the last 24 track tape recorder being used would 3M still be manufacturing tape for them? Would the machines sell for a premium over their new prices? Kind of arrogant to think you are the only one using a technology just cause you yourself abandoned it,
I think people have a hard time getting used to Smashing Pumpkins when they change. Remember how people hated Adore and Machina when the came out, and now more than fifteen or ten years later they're looked at as classic Smashing Pumpkins album. In ten years people will have learned to love Zeitgeist and consider it a Smashing Pumpkins classic.
SP has ALWAYS been Billy and Jimmy in the studio...how is this any different? Everybody who uses the "it sucks cuz it's only 1/2 the Pumpkins" complaint is a fucking misinformed moron...
@guitarniac "always", sure. Mellon Collie is very much a band effort in the studio. James is missed. Funny how both Billy and Jimmy said he wasn't that much of a guitar player...Live footage abounds to prove otherwise.
I think Zeitgeist was The Pumpkins most hard rocking album to date. I'm talkin' about the genre of course. The alternative elements were kind of thrown off. Well, this is a great album in it own right. It grew on me and now I fucking love it. I LOVE Zeitgeist. Love it.
"It didn't feel organic to the time frame we were in" FUCK THE TIME FRAME YOU WERE IN!!! you wanted to make a "Smashing Pumpkins" record you can't do that in the current time frame!!!!
Pumpkins rebooted with Jimmy worked. It was still relevant. Zeitgeist was like they'd never been away in many ways. I've heard the new SP tunes seen some live stuff, its not pulling up any trees its simply okay, but its The Billy Corgan Band now. Period. I'd've had far more respect for him if he'd dropped the SP name. But Billy C doesn't shift units or sell concert tickets. Guess you can't blame him. Don't make it right though. For me Zeitgeist will always be the SP swansong.
@jakeenan I agree. Of course, new fans will swallow everything.I've even heard "it doesn't matter the other members aren't here anymore".I saw SP in early 96, I have another perspective. Zwan is actually more "Smashing Pumpkins" than the current incarnation of the band as Jimmy was playing on it! Jimmy also played on BC's solo album. It's great Billy is still around making good music rather than retired. But the name thing is difficult.Even if BC always was "the man in charge"...
I'm glad Billy still records in analog. Seeing that Tascam 688 makes me drool. I still have my Tascam 488 and 424 machines and will only go digital for a few things because those machines still sound great. I use type II tapes and mix them to a Sony desk with type IV tape and get a sound that digital never has giving me. I use condenser mics on drums, acoustics and vocals to get a professional sound. I'm going to get a reel deck soon and master all my stuff on that. I'll never go full digital.
Their music is awesome but I think Billy's singing is a bad mix. It's all nasal and high-pitched with a southern accent and doesn't mix well with the music. I think if he's really serious about making a come back, he should look into Josh Homme (QOTSA), Dexter Holland(Offspring), or Chad Kroeger (Nickelback). Other choices could be Dave Ghrol, Mike Patton, and Billy Joe from Green Day
That's because the Smashing Pumpkins, at the time Zeitgeist was recorded, was only Billy and Jimmy. They recorded Zeitgeist themselves, then brought other band members (Jeff Schroeder, Ginger Reyes/Pooley and Lisa Harriton) in to play the songs live, and be the new version of The Smashing Pumpkins.
I firmly believe that Zeitgeist, American Gothic and Teargarden By Kaleidoscope will be viewed as masterpieces in ten years, just like Adore, Machina / The Machines Of God, and MachinaII / The Friends And Enemies Of Modern Music are viewed as masterpieces now, but were considered poor albums in their day.
@nicholsjoshua15 i'm not sure if they will be viewed as masterpieces, as it is clearly influenced by pop in some cases (billy has stated that he didn't want to do it like that, but the record kinda asked them to make it a bit more pop-like); but they will be MUCH MORE apreciated
The Smashing Pumpkins have always had a pop rock, dream pop, classic rock, and hard rock influence. To me there's nothing that new about Zeitgeist, American Gothic or Teargarden By Kaleidoscope.

Zeitgeist is horrible, Jimmy chaimberlain's drumming was the only good thing about it, "Sellout"

@nicholsjoshua15 that pop sound has only been heard in their latest records: most songs from zeitgeist and teargarden especially
