  • He can drum, but will he blend?

  • He's a cool robot! I like him!

  • It's cool, does it have velocity control. Also I reckon it needs to be louder more force,

check out my stuff I've done something similar

  • sweet. ok. so now for some double bass....

  • Youtube always blows my mind with its negativity- this is really, really amazing work. To all the morons with snarky, misspelled idiotic comments... what have you done?

  • this robo-drummer a stupid shit-faced bastard

  • Hey, Steve! Your robot drummer is way cool! But does he remember to show up for the gig? (ha-ha) sidestreetsam

  • I would love to jam with this wooden buddy. Seems like he's a friendly guy. And preparing the lunch with him would be a real joy too. "Hey buddy-you cut the onions ok?" Errr...great work Mr. Averill!

  • well... soon we are useless

  • beautiful jams

  • Incredible work :)

Am I crazy or are the faster hits on hi hat and ride a tiny bit off sometimes? How come?

    Very entertaining anyway :)

  • Thank you all for your comments. It has been a fun ride. Considering what this project is (or isn't) I find comments like "creepy" and "7th grade drummer" to be compliments. For me it's just about creating something, if it turns out interesting to others, that's a cool bonus. SA

  • Great. perfect. Just what we need, the 7th grade jazz band drummer threatening to take our places.

  • Pretty amazing work. It's not supposed to be a good drummer folks. Look for the method behind the madness.Everyone needs a hobby I guess.

  • I think he has a woody!

  • PS: I'd hate to see these advance and get rid of human percussionists/drummers. =p

  • This drummer has the most feel and voice while playing, sure beats Gadd, Rich, and Greb. -.-

  • Fantastic.

  • DRMBOT 0110 would kick his ass.

  • Hey! I think your project is just absolutelly AWESOME! Have you made all by yourself? Or is it result of some group of inventors work? I am giving you all thumbs up :) It is simple, yet working. I believe, that in some future versions, you'll be able to give him more "strenght" and ofc implement some dynamics in the play. Still, great job IMO!

    Peter

  • Groovy thing! Awesome!

  • malakia.

  • Spruce, I don't hear your kick drum!...lazy bastard

Heard his substance of choice is Thompson Water Sealer....won't do a show without it

  • very cool robot I like the idea and the action of the robot is great ////

  • haha this is very cool!

  • So let me start by saying this is really cool. but there's gotta be a way to get everything a little more even.... maybe having it's own drumset completely connected to make calibrating distances easier or something. still really cool :) Sounds good enough to be a human beginner drummer, which I guess would be the first step!!

  • I'd say his performance is a little ... {takes off sunglasses}... wooden

    Honestly, this is pretty awesome.

  • @sacramentalist

With RealDolls and robots patrolling the Korean Border, I think Spruce Deuce is a sign of the upcoming Singularity. Fortunately, he's playing Nord instead of Kurtzweil.

  • Nice job. I posted it on our blog for mechanical musical instruments and clockwork automata.

  • love the robot

  • Sadly the next morning Robot Drummer was found face down on the floor of his apartment, drowned in a thick puddle of imported servo lubricant.

Lindsay Lohan had been seen entering and leaving the apartment at various times the previous night. She is now being questioned by the police.

  • Wow just awesome

  • sweet studded dog collar robot drummer man

  • kraftwerk want this robot LOL

, but, robot is for electronic music, not for jazz.

  • Cool, but kind of creepy.

  • I have only one thing to say: MORE COWBELL !!

  • If you went to the trouble of making that, you would at least make it female and give it a big set of tits.

  • You are THE DUDE! Great machine.

  • making friends... xDDDD (buy one...LOL!)

  • The only thing you should do differently is connect a servo directly to the bass drum. The foot setup isnt powerful enough to to fight the spring tension. Take his foot off and just directly connect it to the peddle. Other than that this is really cool.

  • Mick Fleetwood > all, Nuff Said.

  • Sad. It's better than some drummers I have played with in my life.

  • @LoginsSuck123 I think every musician in the world has played at least with one another musician who sucks on what they do, whatever instrument they played...

  • Awesome!

  • I can't help but feel your relationship and inappropriate touching with that thing is very unhealthy

  • It looks like he has a woody

  • Really cool! , should have tighter HARDER technique and more dynamics tho. Is that becase of the sequencing or isit made already? :)

  • Awsome! Now I want a Heavy Metal Version with a tight doublebase...and for the body a realdoll :)

  • that robot is playing on a nicer set than mine and I am a human

  • @SSselfsponsored how can you be so sure?

  • Comment removed

  • love it!!!

  • Just, PLASE, if you are tying to make it human, start with the HANDS. Dont have the dumb idia to leave it to the end and put some scissors there...

  • so so lonely

  • Talked to some bass players that gigged with this Spruce D. cat...said he was way too stiff and very mechanical

  • that is awesome

  • Lolz at his hat! EPIC

  • Doctor Avalanche, is that you?

  • HE HAS NO SOUL

  • YEAH!!

  • Great job! The movement is very lifelike.

  • this guy wanted someone to jam with so he built a robot... that's how I see it anyway lool

  • It has no heart....

  • That was eerie and fantastic at the same time. I'm glad you embraced the creepiness by hugging the robot at the end. kudos

  • Chip Foose! You cant fool me.

  • Loosen up there,man.....lol...seriously, very cool project. Now if you could interface it with a midi capable drum module such as a Roland TD10 or a drum machine like a Yamaha RX7, that wold be incredible. I'd love to see it play some of the Roland's demo drum tracks via midi.!

  • that's fun.. I think if you work out a way to make the robot's hand more "flexible" it could be more "human"

    Do you work with drummers?

(in my opinion another servo motor behind the "fulcrum point" of the drumstick, to simulate fingers, could fix the parasite rebound ... but it may be very difficult to configure/program)

    Good work anyway, simply amazing!

  • sounds a bit robotic.

  • @NewgroundsOwnSBB genuine lol.

  • Steve this is really Cool!- every band shouls have one incase there drummer get's tempermental!.

is spruce a he or a she?

how hard is it to progrom spruce - e.g. strap motion capture on Gail when she's drumming to on on of yoru great sons to record the midi track?

  • I've heard much worse human drummers. Props to Mr. Steve Averill

  • Genius

  • creepy

  • When I saw this video I got splinters up my spine. great work

  • what the hack robot drummer with bad timing ? what is this for ??

  • Any plans to make a version of stainless steel for METAL drumming? :D

  • Love it, great job!

  • This is the WORST piece of SHIT i have ever seen!

  • Awesome job man!

  • Thats nice, but the songs by Bushido are much better!

  • Amazing work. What's especially impressive is that there's no reliance on pneumatics or "industrial" robotics hardware. I'd like to see more details about the design, construction, and MIDI sequencing.
