  • we're singing this in my choir class. most of the girls immediately started complaining because it's a "boring classical song". Every time we practice it i realize just how beautiful of a song it really is...

  • Jesus, man, his voice gives me the weirdest feeling.

  • This is where Jeff Buckley got his falsetto style. He could have done a great version of this...

  • His voice is bone chilling. This guy is out there. I first heard of him watching "No Direction Home".

  • Listen up you dumb bitches. Fuck Lady Gaga and Ja Rule. This is real music son.

  • powerful stuff...that was rolling 'round in Dylan's head..which would be rarefied air, right???

  • it ain´t me babe!!

  • In the second to last verse does he sing, "go on your way and rest," or "go on your way out west," or does he sing something else?

  • @788269 go on your way and rest, I believe

  • @788269 "go on your way and rest"

  • This guy is a counter tenor. It's a little startling if you aren't expecting those tones to come from the singer. His phrasing is so interesting. More so if you listen to Joan Baez singing this first. L.O.L. There's a video cover by raymondcrooke that is OK for a listen but what is great are his commets on Niles.

  • "The first time I heard it, It disgusted me..."

    WTF?

  • I'm 16 and am inspired by him. It's beautiful, actual music compared to what's out today. You feel his story.

  • by JJ Niles

  • Thanks for posting this. I really wantedto hear a full version

  • This guy was a major influence on Bob Dylan, this is one of the changing influences in music.Imagine what the crowd must of thought when they heard this for the first time 104 years ago!!!????

  • I love the beginning history of the song.

  • I remember hearing John Jacob Niles play this song in "No Direction Home". The first time I heard it, it disgusted and intrigued me. But it grew on me and I think it's a great song and he performs it well. I love how he sings the high notes.

  • this song is 102 years old and still stunning!

  • Wow, I think you just broke my brain with that little point there.

Also, I think I have a man crush on John Jacob Niles.

  • holy crap. this is incredible.

  • I absolutely love this song.

    John Jacob Niles is brilliant.

  • Nothing beats American Folk Music

  • *****

  • How does one sing like this? It's mind-boggling, especially when you consider he was 65 at the time of recording!

  • Actually, it's just right that this awesome song is followed by silence and the photo, because one needs to simply let it sink in. J.J. Niles was, through recordings and his ballad book, one of the major influences in my folksinging life. Thanks so much for posting.

  • Simply amazing.

  • Its funny how every now and again you discover something REALLY special!!! This is one of those moments.Just absolutly astounding!!

  • @vicpur Exactly.

  • He did.

  • Go away from my window, I wonder if Bob Dylan used that line for the first line in It ain't me babe.

  • i was thinking the exact same thing when i heard this song.

  • You sound like an open minded kind of guy. I'll guess you'll be listening to vocal clones for the rest of your life.

  • I really enjoy this song. Its nice to know there are others out there that have the same taste in music.

  • What is this?! I've never heard about this man before (shame on me). It's wonderful...thanks Haarhark.

  • i cried and,...cry

  • devine, a true classic!

  • thank you from the heart.

  • Perfect

  • aaaaaahhh!

    his voice is amazing

    and soothing.

  • I'm singing this song for solo contest in choir

  • it´s cool old song!!!!

  • It's amazing just how "pop" this song is for 1908.

There aren't many vocal performances that could compete with this. Of any music, ever.

  • Bob Dylan took the first line of It Aint Me Babe from this song.

  • Thank you. I prefer his other performance you posted too, but that's a great gift ! By your fault I bought one of his records...

  • SIMPLY FANTASTIC!

  • Excellent!
