In regards to riding your bicycle on the footpath its called common sense and duty of care to those around you/pedestrians. Who rides their bicycle's on the foot paths around malls, where mothers/families are with their children and so forth ?!? Here in Australia our Federal Government is considering making bicyclists pay registrations, you use our roads and obviously footpaths so bring on bicycle registration AUS/NZ!!! and by the sounds of it bicycle operations education lol!
@rs2nve21 You're missing the point completely, the guys in the video is not about being ruthless and taking control over the footpath. The point is whether the mall actually has signage to show that you can't actually cycle on the footpath, and clearly the security guards have no evidence to back up their talk. Now if you were talking about health & Safety that is another issue. Also in response to paying for registration for cycling, another failed point, bicycles are sustainable, cars are not
Typical stupid Maoris. There is nothing more ignorant, belligerent and pigheaded than a Maori security guard. "I couldn't get into the Police because of my criminal record, so I became a minimum-wage rentacop, eh, bro!"
What a load of bollocks. What you have there is idiotic security who have no idea what they're doing trying to enforce a law that doesn't legally exist. Shame on The Base, what possible reason would they have for banning cyclists? It doesn't make sense.
@cryancondor We weren't trying to 'catch them out'. We were shopping at The Base and were parked up waiting for a friend to finish work. Your abusive comments do not help your comment.
Riding a bike on a footpath is illegal. It is dangerous to pedestrians. Would the Green party dude listen to that? No. He was there with an agenda to make a point. I agree with much of green policy in principle, the methods used to present their views and the self righteous attitude as displayed in this video is what will stop me ever voting for them
@terribletai - Thats a law for PUBLIC roads not private ones - as the NZTA pointed out - "However, there is an implied licence for people to come onto the property to conduct their business by whatever means and no automatic presumption that cyclists are not allowed to enter the property unless there are signs stating that they are not."
@terribletai We had parked up on the footpath after shopping to wait for a friend. We were not endangering any pedestrians and we can hardly wait on the road? I was not there with any agenda or to make any point, we had gone there to buy shoes from Rebel Sport. The Base Mall has the security footage to back my story up.
@terribletai riding on foot path is not illegal now, there are lots of places around New Zealand and many in Hamilton were cyclist (via signs) are told to ride on the footpath, . Boundry road bridge and in fact all the bridges.
@hippynz Land Transport (Road User) Rule 2004 (SR 2004/427) (as at 10 May 2011):
1.11 Riding cycles on footpaths, etc

2) Subclause (1) does not apply to a person who rides a cycle on a footpath in the course of delivering newspapers, mail, or printed material to letterboxes.
@hippynz I am neither blind nor stupid. I was simply quoting the relevant piece of law from the relevant source in response to your comment "riding on the footpath is not illegal now,' It is important to note however that the definition of what is a footpath, road verge, shared access way is upto the local authority or private landowner involved.
You should know you don't ride bikes on the footpath. Especially in a pedestrian mall area! You've obviously been winding up the security guards for some time before this clip started, that stuff they say at the end is just their exasperation at your juvenile argumentativeness, rather than the Base's official position on bikes. The Base is totally fine with bikes, as long as they're on the road where they should be.
@LibbyANZ Before this clip started 2 security guards had descended on us and told us to leave for merely being on our bikes. We were not 'winding them up'. There would be video evidence from security cameras to prove that. I was not there with any agenda or to make any point. Once again the security footage backs me up. I have now had emails/calls/texts and been told face to face by about 30 people they have experienced the same treatment, I was just the one that filmed it, that's all.
Max Coyle stop being a fucken trouble maker. @al1511 Thankyou Al. I've been overwhelmed with the response of cyclists that have been treated the same way and also people that have been ill treated for other things at The Base. @MaxDillonCoyle too right, if TE AWA doesn't want cycclists on their footpaths they should dedicate cycling paths to this growing dempgraphic. the roads in and out of The Base are very dangerous, to the point that i would advise cyclists stay away from them. @06LightYearsAway I think you've hit the nail on the head there, people are telling me this happens all the time and I've been hearing the same thing from other cyclists throughout NZ. We need to step up and be the clean, green country we have the opportunity to be!
security guards that failed cop school, trying too bully others. Wait are those maori wardens?? they should be fighting child abuse and all those tinny houses im sure there much more damaging too their so called mana.
Being such a big place to walk shop to shop it seems rarther stupid that you cant bike! hey I know! lets park next to the base and when we are ready for the mall lets move the car and spend another 15mins trying to find a car park!! seriously a simple cycle route from the mall the to warehouse would be mint :>
@Mindstudies Thanks mate, we had parked our bikes in front of Rebel Sport and after we'd grabbed some shoes and drinks we jumped on the bikes and cycled (using the road/carpark as that's all there is) over to the other side of the mall and stopped our bikes in front of ToysRUs to wait for a friend. The footpath there is about 10M wide and there was not a pedestrian in sight. I am going to ask Tainui Group Holdings to provide cycle lanes as clearly there is some issue here
Also, they're security guards, they don't have any powers that private citizens don't have. THEY can't tresspass you from jack shit, they have to call the cops and have the cops tresspass you, which they can't just do for no good reason. Especially not for riding your bike somewhere that doesn't have any signs (The guards telling you is BS) saying you cant.
@kyhwana Unfortunately they can trespass you quite simply.. All they have to do is download the easily accessible trespass paperwork from the govt website and then fill it out in duplicate. 1 for "offender", 1 for police records and 1 for their own records... Either way it's still BS that they have taken this stand.
"we are giving you the signage" what rubbish that is not legal. Telling the speaker he can not communicate with other people again illegal. Not even sure if these are licence security guards, but the for Maori that does not matter as the laws do not apply to them. The Base, the place only Maorii can shop at without getting bullied.
Tainui does not care about the environment, and likes to bully shoppers. Maori wonder why they get a bad image, well here is and example, they do not care about the environment, only money, they like to bully people (shoppers) and legally ignore peoples rights under the law. These people did not commit any crime yet the staff tried to stop one of them pointing out peoples rights under the law. Always a different law for Maori. The brown bullies strike again.
@hippynz i totally agree. Once again they strike again they always seem too have this underlying hate for everything but especially for the white ones.
If they were maori it would be aww g sup nice rims awww g just racked them from the warehouse ahhh true bro.
Oh, man. My beloved hometown is rooting itself hard. First, the downtown gets turned into malls. Then the downtown is hollowed out in favour of malls at the edge of town. Why no bikes at the Base? The doesn't even make sense. The Base ought to be deeply ashamed of their policy.
@MaxDillonCoyle ....and this stunt progresses our failing education system, alleviates child abuse or growing poverty HOW? This is exactly why I refrain from voting Green each election even though I do like alot of the Greens policies - Poor leadership.
In regards to riding your bicycle on the footpath its called common sense and duty of care to those around you/pedestrians. THEY can't tresspass you from jack shit, they have to call the cops and have the cops tresspass you, which they can't just do for no good reason. Especially not for riding your bike somewhere that doesn't have any signs (The guards telling you is BS) saying you cant.
kyhwana 6 months ago
@kyhwana Unfortunately they can trespass you quite simply.. All they have to do is download the easily accessible trespass paperwork from the govt website and then fill it out in duplicate. 1 for "offender", 1 for police records and 1 for their own records... Either way it's still BS that they have taken this stand.

@RhysandT1 Only if you give them your real name/address! I don't believe they can force you to give them that.

@kyhwana You do not have to be a cop to tresspass someone from your business.

Wow, that's some bullshit right there "We're giving you the signage". Uh yeah dude, that's not legal.

"we are giving you the signage" what rubbish that is not legal. Telling the speaker he can not communicate with other people again illegal. Not even sure if these are licence security guards, but the for Maori that does not matter as the laws do not apply to them. The Base, the place only Maorii can shop at without getting bullied.
hippynz 6 months ago
@hippynz um, can you stop being racist? It's not because they're Maori, it's because they're being dicks to cyclists.

If bikes are not allowed they have to have notices up

Security "No bikes"
Max: "So you're not allowed to cycle into the base, that's what you're saying?"
Security: "Yes"
Max: "So you're not cycle friendly whatsoever?"
Security: "None whatsoever"
Max: "But if you're in a car that's fine?"
Security: "Yes"

@MaxDillonCoyle ....and this stunt progresses our failing education system, alleviates child abuse or growing poverty HOW? This is exactly why I refrain from voting Green each election even though I do like alot of the Greens policies - Poor leadership.
