What thunderlips said. Strange bad religion twist. I'm a strange BR fan who is also a Christian but still enjoys a good deep BR thought provoking dive. Just a crazy thought, but it seems they are on a search for truth. And I believe they will find it. Again, just a thought.
I interpeted the repeadted line 'But it was only rain' as people alling so many things miracles or judgement or acts of god, when they are simply rain. For example if it rained a perfect amount in a very poor part of Africa, and all the crops grew, some people would call it an act of god or a miracle, when in fact (in my opinion at least) it was only rain. I am not saying we shouldnt be happy it happened, but we shouldnt go thanking a being we do not know for sure exists.
@themurderofcoke this is pretty legit, the idea that there's no such thing as an omen or portent, just our interpretation of a naturally occurring phenomenon.
lol I guess everyone has their interpration, but the lyrics actually seem to be a deliberate play off the story of Noah's Arc. A non-beliver insisting the rain is only rain as it falls like judgement, first he asks a scientist for help, and in a strange for BR twist ultimately asks god for mercy because the rain won't stop, even if its only rain.
@Thunderlips502 Maybe in the song there's also a reference to Noah, but it's not wrong to interpret it in the light of present day. The last tsunamis and hurricanes made many people think they was a divine punishment, but "it's only rain."
I certainly think there is a contemporary spin on it. Ultimately, I think the song is about fear, not literally rain, and how it effects people. Also think there is importance to the lines "window pane" and "wilderness." Easy to dismiss it as only rain from inside your house.
@Thunderlips502 Sorry, IMO the rain is "only rain", not an allegory of the fear :-) I apologize for my bad English, hope you get my point. The main problem of mankind is to give the Nature phenomenons a different, false meaning, because of ignorance, or/and in order to support the hypothesis of the existence of a God. When America was waiting for Hurricane Irene, many people in my country said it was a God's punishment. Maybe now they're waiting for the falling of frogs on their windshield? :-)
imo rain is the idiocracy, the lies and the stupidity people are getting fed with every day from media, the Christian right-wingers, banks etc who benefit from keeping us in ignorance.
They're are constantly telling us that whatever's happening, it's the muslims and immigrants (the east) fault.
Propaganda is raining down upon us, bringing us closer to the "judgment day".
But there is not judgment day. there is only ignorance and fear.
@Terremides Rain is only rain, not a God's punishment. But why you're putting (right winged) Christians among the wrong people and Muslims among the (good) victims? Also Islam is a religion, so also Muslims are wrong.
@firstadamswife What? err... *sigh*. You just dont understand what im saying.
I'm not talking about a "God" or any kind of punishment. Im not saying Muslims are good (or bad for that matter) Im not even talking about religion.
Im trying to say that the stupidity in the world is increasing and clouding peoples judgment and ability to think. thus these are the rainy days, rainy days are usually grey and cloudy. Media, Right-Wingers, banks and other people who benefit from this (oil companies)
(continuation on my previous comment) .. are telling us that it's the foreigners fault, new things like thinking and questioning are bad for you and all in all men from east are dangerous and want to kill you.(thus they are telling us that plagues, Famine and drought, aka bad things like a sucky economy, is cuz of imigrants or taxes or other new things aka the danger from the east. But in fact it's the RightWingers etc who are manufacturing our judgment day by wars, oil, exploiting economy etc.
(3rd and last comment) we, the enlightened people, need to tell everyone about it with facts and making people see clearly, (thus scientists saving us from the rainy days).
Did that make more sense to you? If not Im willing to send you a message about it, but the max amount of text allowed in youtube comments is pissing me off.
@Terremides 1) Sorry, I'm Italian and maybe I didn't express my point well. 2) "Rain is only rain, not a God's punishment" is the meaning of the song in sum, imo, I was not quoting your words, just a way to stress that I belong to Scientist club. 3) About the rest, you said: "They're are constantly telling us that whatever's happening it's the muslims (..) fault". Talking like that, you're automatically describing Muslims as victims (even if that was not your intention), don't you see?
@Terremides (2nd and last comment) Apart this little polemic, I totally agree with your intepretation of the first line of the song ("Hey scientist please save us from our rainy days").

@DaymanVersusNightman Hate to say it, but "unite and praise" is the sort of thing you hear in, you know, religion. Isn't that exactly what this band is against? I love them, too, but let's not turn it into worship.
