  • HE's a great musician and an even greater human being rolled into one. I feel so lucky to be born in this era ( i was 12 when roja was released).

  • i think we cant we comapre AR rahman with Beethoven...Beethoven is one of the greatest...probably the greatest...I love AR Rahmans music too...but many countries have artists like AR rahman who compose equally brilliant music...so in my humble opinion i think only time will tell(a few centuries past) whether their music will be as much appreciated as Beethoven's today.

  • ok can listen enjoy thats all.it doesn't come close to the heart.

  • So god

  • GOD

  • ARR at his best, this video is another great example of his music brain,if u notice the beginning of this song it wud hav sounded very ordinary but with the simple chords and by sustaining them in the second part it sounds totally different,if u hav som kind of music knowledge u wil notice that the chords he used here r all primary chords but it sounds so melodious,v all somtimes think that te chords he uses r very complicated but thats not true and this is a great example for it,thank u AR ji

  • I CAN'T FATHOM THIS AT ALL - THIS VERY MEDIOCRE PLAYING BY ARR HAS RECEIVED 144,000 VIEWS WHILE THE GREAT MSV'S HIGHLY SUPERIOR PIANO PLAYING HAS GOTTEN JUST 3400 VIEWS...

  • did you get reply from ARR?.. i guess he didn't used the JANAGANA MANA, the sanskritized bengali song written by Tagore.

  • superb dude

  • this is NOT bethoven :|

  • God why do people fight over music, musicians and genres of music ?!? I just dont get it !! it doesn't matter how experienced a musician u are or how much u know theoretically or practically abt music, or whether u undstd music at all...@the end of the day if u cant respect diff genres of music and compare one genius to another...then I dnt think u've understood music at all....

    peace

  • I don't think you understood the exchange. To compare this to Beethoven was wrong. Plain and simple.

There are two aspects to classical music - one is aesthetic, the other is intellectual. To understand the latter, you have to study music. There is no way round it. AR compositions contain an intellectual aspect which only an ignorant person would compare to Beethoven.

I never said AR was a bad musician, but even AR would disagree with the comparison if he really understood Beethoven.

  • I didn't say I was "highly productive" (whatever your subjectivity takes that to mean), and your anecdotal evidence (n = 1) is embarrasingly meaningless.

I suggest you re-read my comment again in its context, because your reply here suggests you entirely missed the point.

  • did u see the background score of ar rahman in slumdog millionaire...it was spectacular...AR Rahman is a genuis

  • I have no problem with you calling him a genius in his genre/field. My only point was that he is not comparable to Beethoven. But if ARR is going to be called a genius, then Beethoven should be referred to as a God.

  • Beethoven? who cares. Western and Eastern systems of music developed and matured separately for centuries and continue to do so. Plus, both musicians belong to different eras. So what is this stupidity you're spewing? You think in the Hindu civilization, geniuses haven't expounded verse upon verse of carnatic tradition? AR Rahman is India's gem, but he can't compare to its carnatic masters of past and present. It's rediculous that you drag Beethoven into this, but God too? stupid, God is dead.

  • Are you talking to me? You do realise that I originally criticised the youtuber called "9849445536", who referred to ARR as "indian beethoven". I am in complete agreement with you - ARR is india's gem, Beethoven is not comparable, and carnatic masters are not comparable. I even agree that "God is dead". I'm both an atheist and fan of Nietzsche. But I patently used "God" as a metaphor here, like for example, "Oh my God, why don't people read comments properly and in context before replying?".

  • The whole Beethoven and Rahman comparison all depends on who and how they are comparing them......for example for me both their music appeal to my heart in similar ways so you have no right to criticize someone's comparison since we r all unique and are their music appeals to us in different ways.......on other hand he is still known as the "The Mozart of India", while many experts agree Mozart was a more talented and "perfect" composer while Beethoven was more revolutionary. Rahman is both :)

  • I have no issue with you saying that they both appeal to your heart - that is the aesthetic difference I referred to. But only Carnatic masters should be DIRECTLY compared to Europe's finest from an intellectual perspective.

Anyway, this is why the West laughs at us; we allow ourselves to look as though we lag behind, whereas India invented a musical form which is truly comparable Western classical. But if people are too pig-ignorant and lazy to open their eyes, there's not much I can do really.

  • Um i am an westerner lol and i do not laugh at indians, the music is quite amazing, and i think what you are getting to is that indians do not respect their own art, which is untrue India (well what i have seen of it) flourishes with music, and music as i said before can be compared in many ways there is no actual boundaries, and if there were then its not truly art now is it.........and so i rephrase what i said before Mozart was the "Rahman of his times" :) peace

  • Um, I am a Westerner too lol. That wasn't the point of my comment. If you think there are no boundaries to art, then I should crash some pots and pans around and sell it to you. Anyway I can't really explain neuroesthetics to you on here, but you may be interested to look it up. Anyway, I'm happy to agree to disagree. Peace back to you :)

  • hehe nowadays pots and pans do sell......u cant deny that lol

  • lol very true, sir :)

  • but that doesnt make sense because of the fact that ar rahman and beethoven are from totally different genres and both of them have a different form of composing their pieces..so there is no comparing between the two their both great.

  • I agree. So the person who made the comparison in the first place is wrong.

  • what should i say??? ur da best..love u ar...keep on rockin

  • As a Sri Lankan Tamil neurosurgeon, who has studied musicology formally, taught practical and theoretical music, performed mridangam, keyboard and pianoforte for the past 25 years, including performances on Deepam TV and TTN Tamil channels, I think you should perhaps find out who you are talking to before making comments. That way you may avoid looking like a complete moron.
