Try to NEVER speak the name of lennons murderer! That's what he wanted...fame. It didn't matter that he chose to murder someone many of us thought was a great human bieng. He does not deserve the fame, with his name associated w/ john lennon! F**k him! Take away his plan! "Strike his name from the record books"!!!!! It's the right thing to do, spite him.
You know what I really like about this version of the song? Chris sings it like he LIVED with it for a long time, letting it bubble up into this rendition and soul cry. God bless.
hasnt chris by this point earned the right to not take shit from us youtubers? nothing on this page in particular, but like all the "scream" stuff. it certainly wasnt some of his best stuff but still better than most bands best songs. this here is a prime example of his brilliance. its great when one genious pays tribute to another. thank god for john and the beatles and thank god for chris being influenced by them. if there were no beatles then im not so sure chris wouldve becsame a songwriter
TYING TO COMPARE CRISS TO ANY OTHER SINGER IS LIKE TRYING TO COMPARE A MODERN COMPUTER TO AN ORIGNAL TEXAS INTRAMENTS CALCULATOR THERE IS NO COMPARISON
@ngilbert9872@hOOdilol I think the most amazing thing about this "interpretation" is that he can actually sing like that without having a pit bull gnawing on his testicles. As for me, I've been trying to "Imagine" that I never hit this stupid link and heard his awful howling in the first place. Sorry to rip on your rock god, but once in a while we Nazis have to dole out the ultimate truth to the less fortunate. Don't worry - it's not like I'm blaspheming Saint Cobain here!
Imagine all the people living for today? That's what we got right now and it sure as hell doesn't result in peace. Desire for instant gratification and "me first" mentality has only one outcome ... conflict. Maybe we should imagine all the people without human nature, because thats the only way find peace.
I think Lennon's motivation behind the line "living for today" was more along the lines of "secular collective spirituality" with people living their lives for themselves and one another rather than for or according to some central religious figurehead. It definitely wasn't advocating consumer materialism.
and "human nature" is a very broad term encompassing the entirety of selfishness and altruism. As far as finding peace, burying the role religion has in society is a start.
I just went back and listened to it again... And I still don't like it. Reminds me of Christina Aguilera hijacking the National Anthem at the Super Bowl last year. Sure, you're a great singer, and you can BELT out a tune (as I've been educated), but why? This song is beautiful in its simplicity -- aka the way Lennon conceived, intended and performed it. No need to belt. Just sing. This Cornell thing is not a cover. It's a rendition. Probably meant to be a tribute. But not my cup of tea.
to TheBananamanAssassin:: I dont understand your comment,..you wrote:
"@ChimeraAZ Which would be contradictory to the message of the song". It's got nothing to do with my comment at all. All I said was that while I like John's version,I felt Chris's version had a spiritual sound to it.I know you dont agree, and others here dont either, and thats ok,..but I can say how it sounds to me.I wasnt dissing anyone or anything.
I love this, but I love Lennon's singing more. This version sounds more "normal" to me, that's the best way I can describe how I feel about it. I find Lennon's version both more emotional and more interesting. This is definitely one of the best covers though.
@tm2jetfire It feels like a cover. I don't feel it when Chris sings it. He sounds amazing, but the emotion isn't there like it is in John's original. It's like Chris does TOO much with the vocals on this one and it takes away from the sentiment.
Who likes this more than the original?? You should be forced to go back to music appreciation finishing school. All he does is yell - and that's completely missing the point of the song. It's a nice version, if you like hard rock stars doing slow songs.
@savsleeto Yell? Really? I'm a classically trained Madrigal and choral singer and here's some music appreciation finishing school for you...yelling doesn't involve pitch or tone. This is not yelling...it's belting. There's a big difference. I agree that John's original will always be the best, but try to open your mind and appreciate this for the amazing take that Cornell has on it. I think it's brilliant and the best cover of it I've ever heard.
@ngilbert9872 the only better cover i've heard was from connie talbot...but thats probably just because shes a little girl...and the nature of the song makes it so god damn beautiful
@savsleeto You mistake Cornell's naturally scratchy, powerful voice for yelling. YOU are the one that needs to go back to music school. He has a great voice and does "Imagine" very well.
@savsleeto I don't ever recall hearing Chris doing a cover song where he's trying to imitate the original singer, and if you are doing that better call it a tribute. Cover songs have an implicit idea of putting something of your own to the original song. There's no school for music appreciation, you either appreciate or not and depends on your own taste. Maybe next time you wont be such a music Nazi and think your opinion is the ultimate truth, but I smell hipster douche from a mile.
I can't believe I've never seen this... What an amazing take on this song... Chris is such a soulful singer... And for the person that thinks everything should sound like black hole Sun... You are obviously not an artist... Let Chris be Chris...
Chris Cornell has a great voice and what makes him a great singer and musician is that he knows how to fit his voice on songs. I think that Matthew Bellamy is a screamer, I like his voice but sometimes he screws up a song abusing his talent.
i think he maybe went off the tone in the first 20 sec a few times but actually that is just the way he sings low notes.the rest was amazing.cornell forever
I love Chris Cornell but I don't get why he tries to be all cute with his voice like he's John Mayer or something...... like that back of the throat sound. Just sing it like you sing black hole sun man
