Definitley!! I remember a number of funky gospel songs from pastor Shirly Caesar back in the 70's and ealy 80's. "Heavenly Father" has to be the funkiest. i m surpised no one has re made the song or posted it on Youtube. Yes, she is another pioneer of the Urban Gospel sound. Most know her for her traditional sound; however, back in the day some of her music was controversial.
Yeap! its right on time... see she was even innovating gospel music back then! Keeping up with the times and giving the people something catchy and groovy to listen to and still be inspirational.. its really cool!... They couldnt get her to sing secular music... so this is one way to keep the pop feel without loosing her genre!
Shirley also recorded a powerful song in 1972 called `A Message to the Nation` . It has never been released on cd so it is imppossible to find unless you are lucky enough to have the original lp record. It is one of the greatest songs ever recorded.
Personally, I always felt that there were great songs on both these albums. The lyrics were gospel lyrics indeed though the music was contemporary and out of the norm for Shirley during that time. I always maintained that Shirley has a contemporary edge even before these songs were released and to me her vocals were wonderful on these recordings as well as the many other contemporary songs she recorded through the 1980`s.
This song `Message to the People`was recorded in 1978 on the Roadshow record label. It is from the Shirley Caesar album titled `From the Heart`. Shirley actually only recorded two albums with the Roadshow label. The first album was `First Lady` in 1977 which contained the popular song `Faded Rose`. With the exception of a very few songs, both albums received alot of criticism because the music was considered secular and radio stations wouldn`t play it.

This is from "From The Heart" (1978):

...rather than from "First Lady" (1977) which you have used in the video. Suggest updating it.
Great track though, so nice add! Shame no digital version seems to exist.
