New update on FCC site today. They now say that it will be for 30 seconds and not 3 minutes like we'd heard earlier. I worked for years in communications TV/Media and any emergency system test was always done at night not during the day and what’s more you do not need to shut your entire coms link down to do it. You can test it section by section over a number of weeks to make sure that when it is all set up it will work. Why shut all of your TV, Radio, and net links off at once?

What Shawn is saying on the technical level is mostly correct. However if the boxes are only filter the ports for hyper text, there could still be open ports such as SMTP or FTP or the thousands ov other ports. Have you ever noticed when your ISP seems down and can't serve web pages, you can still use programs such as Skype, etc.
Also there is a way to use an old modem to communicate with other computers via HAM Radio in lieu ov phone lines. Slow but effective enough for basic communications.
I think I'm going to unplug my cable modem, computer, pull the battery from my cell phone and unplug my cable box too on 11/9/2011. I don't even want to see their messages.

@Montagraph See, that's the thing... a signal is being sent out TO the cable receiver.. sure broadcasting capability will be interrupted, but this does not affect internet or phone since the EAS is not broadcast to these systems/devices, etc. I read the FCC protocol, rules, etc for this test and see nothing more than standard procedural protocol for upgrading the system and rule changes

As a telecommuncations worker for one of the big 3, I can honestly tell you that since 2008 the Gov't has been putting a buttload of equipment into all our offices and nodes. The excuse they gave me first was that there was problems in the area. I checked and no one else had problems with their phones. So I pestered. Then I was told it was due to a strike. The only logical reasoning i could see them shutting off all communications would be in the event of a major solar flare that would be damaging......but they can shut the electricity off and solve that, so i think something else is going on. I have some serious questions on the validity of this action.
I worked for years in communications TV/Media and any emergency system test was always done at night not during the day and what’s more you do not need to shut your entire coms link down to do it. You can test it section by section over a number of weeks to make sure that when it is all set up it will work. Why shut all of your TV, Radio, and net links off at once?

i bet, anyone who unplugs during this thing, when they plug-in a few minutes later, either none of their shit will work for a while, or they will just get the virus or whatever as soon as they plug back up. u might have to call and ask to be infected so your things all come back online. that would be super-weak.

I am a Cisco programmer and yes, it is possible. I don't know what is up, but packet filtering is as easy as filtering.
In my opinion, this is just a 'rehearsal' for the event and preperation of isolating the country from communicating to the outside world.

What Shawn is saying on the technical level is mostly correct. However if the boxes are only filter the ports for hyper text, there could still be open ports such as SMTP or FTP or the thousands ov other ports. Have you ever noticed when your ISP seems down and can't serve web pages, you can still use programs such as Skype, etc.
Also there is a way to use an old modem to communicate with other computers via HAM Radio in lieu ov phone lines. Slow but effective enough for basic communications.

@Montagraph See, that's the thing... a signal is being sent out TO the cable receiver.. sure broadcasting capability will be interrupted, but this does not affect internet or phone since the EAS is not broadcast to these systems/devices, etc. I read the FCC protocol, rules, etc for this test and see nothing more than standard procedural protocol for upgrading the system and rule changes

As a telecommuncations worker for one of the big 3, I can honestly tell you that since 2008 the Gov't has been putting a buttload of equipment into all our offices and nodes. You have to have a top secret security clearance just to work on the stuff for them. They "DO" have what it takes to shut down the net for 95% of us out here in the real world. Only when they use a foreign server do they stop calling me a liar sometimes. I have also noted a lot of info which is a matter of public record in France is not known in the USA, such as that the last Pope was HIV positive and how and why AIDS started. I have no idea why this information is not available there in the USA.

@jlyon366 everything shuts down, when there is a blackout, the only thing that works are the land lines. I kept calling and they showed up even later than they said. The excuse they gave me first was that there was problems in the area. I checked and no one else had problems with their phones. So I pestered. Then I was told it was due to a strike. The strike lasted about two weeks. The whole thing was weird.

Its interesting that all the msm reports say is that its a ERA test and will only affect our tvs and radio. Nothing about the internet or cell phones. Newfoundland and Cape Breton N.S. Canada are DIRECTLY connected to both North American and UK.Asian Internet through two different trans-Atlantic hubs.
So in theory, all of North Americas internet could go down, except Newfoundland and Cape Breton.
You'll have to dig a little to find this information, and a why such a system is in place.

The only logical reasoning i could see them shutting off all communications would be in the event of a major solar flare that would be damaging......but they can shut the electricity off and solve that, so i think something else is going on. I don't see how they can cut all communications off for 3 mins. That is dangerous....there are calls every second into a 911 center for emergencies and someones life could be at stake, every second counts...pretty fucking sick if you ask me.

then out of no where I see cop car pass TWICE in front of my house, then some random Pickup Truck
packers a few cars away from my door, the guy never got out and I could clearly see him on the phone.

So what about Cell Phones? I have found such conflicting information on this it's pathetic! I know people who have read so many things that they are using it as a test run for their own family plans because information is running rapid on different theory of what is actually going to happen. So I suggest maintaining radio silence on Ham and C.B. Radio until this blows over. What if this is a test to find people with communications as well as internet services? You just never know.
