Let me clarify here. I hate Mac out of protest because Apple took the Unix OS (a free/open source OS), put Mac's GUI (graphical user interface) on top of it and are selling it for thousands per computer/laptop. Apple is selling computers for thousands that contain, what is suppose to be, a free and open source OS. Because of that, I hate Macs. I am a Linux user and am simply stating how I feel about something that Apple has done and is still doing. Understand why I hate Macs now?
UNIX was never a free system. ATT invented it and was always a closed system. Just groups gradually infringed on the ideas within UNIX.
The code was not stolen by Apple (this is what BSD stands for). BSD's goal is to allow everyone access to good code to build projects on top of. Their view is "Why reinvent the wheel". So how is this stealing?
"Understand why I hate Macs now?"
So you hate Apple for using BSD how it was intended? How very clever of you.
Linux and the software it packages gives you a knowledgement base that you can use. It's not a matter of linux, windows... It's a matter of freedom. Don't you like it? don't use it
And... Are windows, OS X able to let you modify to the last line of code to addapt it to yous needs (about what it can not do, because linux does i you know how to do it)
Linux is made by people for free on their spare time. Most of these people are not good at programming. Microsoft and Apple hire people to do their work. Professionals. Money leads to hiring of professional developers which leads to professional products. And if Linux is so great, and is free, why does it only have 1% of the market? They give it away and it still is not dominate. More people would rather pay for Windows than use Linux.
I'm tired to try nothing with you (about the dicussion) but...
You think it or you know it (let me aswer...you think it) Are you a software developer? Because I am... and you are totally wrong, if not look at IBM and others grabbing software developed by "people in their spare time that are not good programmers..." and selling it under IBM name (its a little bit complicated that that but...it works as an example).
Nine years using Linux and other Open Source Soft it's enough for me to prove it. How many time have you spent using it? and what for?
Linux has become a real alternative to Microsoft and Mac, even with no marketing campaigns. (How much money has Microsoft drop in marketing with Vista? What a fail!).
Linux it's been used, improved and popularized by people that nows something abount OSes. Big sites as google, for instance, uses it (they must be dumb?)
Linux is given away for free and has 1% of the market. The majority of the people would rather buy an OS that doesn't suck balls.
Google uses Linux because it is free. They will add their own proprietary code around the kernel and sell a linux distro eventually. OpenSource is a very good thing. Some of the best things have cam from it. PNG, JPEG and Plan 9 for example. But my point is if you are a company you can hire better workers that know more then your local hobbiest.
Do you think google has money problems to use linux as their insfrastructure? really? So they prefer to save some dollars? do you really think so LOL, LOL. Yopu don't know how hilours it sounds, Don't you heard my laught 7000 km away, at least?
Ok, ok let have this as it was the real motivation. As you argued before, linux is programed by people that are bad, so thier software it bad, right? How a corporation like google is going to risk their it's credibility (and money, because they have contratcs that sure a linked to NO FAILS politics. Google can't fail. never)
People at Google (people that took thhe decission) should be fired at light speed, using your arguments. The reality is other. Linux is not a bad OS.
well, let's have peace :) Despite 99% of people calls it linux its correct name is GNU/Linux. (It would be more accurate to call it GNU) but anyway....
Do you always use GNU/Linux to refer to it? Dont you get the idea I was talking about?
Linux it's not free. Do you know how much a red hat Advanced server license costs? Last time I check it around 2500 dollars. Is not free, preciserly, don't you think.
Once again, People developing Linux are not hobbiest, LOL (Jesus crist!) despite I'm not a beliver, but Your arguments make me... anyway
Once again, What I was trying to explain was OpenSource soft Is not always free (its explained in the GNU license) And is not mandatory that linux (GNU/Linux, if you prefer) has to be for free. Of course red hat develops RedHat RHEL RHAS,...(no free) and fedoraCore (free) There are also people that grabs Redhat RHEL, RHAS,... source code, compiles, packages, and distribute them for free (CentOS) the free and unofficial distro of RedHat
That's why I choose too not use products developed by little amateur hobbyist companies like IBM, Novell, Google, Intel, Oracle and Redhat. (Linux is for a huge part written by the named companies)
That's why 75% of the code of Linux has been written by paid developers...
Google, IBM etc.. are all little hobbyist companies that no-one has ever heard of.
That's why 98% of the supercomputers and the majority of servers run Linux, to save some money.
@SjoerdReligion No no... super computers run linux because it is opensource and can easily be manipulated toward the super computer itself. This is for performance reasons.
As for companies, sure big companies dev the kernel. However MOST of the software that is made for linux including the desktop environments (kde, gnome) are all community coded. So basically you are taking a good kernel and covering it with shit. And by shit I mean Xorg, gnome andor kde, and half-assed applications.
Firefox is community coded? Just like OpenOffice KDE and Xorg... right.
And supercomputers only run Linux because it can be easily manipulated, that's why they do not use BSD for example? (Needless too say, BSD is quite popular for servers and an excellent operating system ;-))
First of all, BSD is wonderful. It just doesn't have many rivers :/
Now Firefox is not completely community coded. Xorg is coded by a group of like what, 4 people? Xorg is a complete clusterfuck and you know it. That mess of code is almost un-readable. It cannot even sync to the vertical blanking period by itself. OpenOffice is community coded... Oracle is not deving on it. Thousands of linux apps are community coded.
@JamesManes Yes, and thousands of Linux apps are also coded by large companies.
OpenOffice was coded by Sun, and now Sun is bought by Oracle.
That Oracle is ditching OpenOffice is true, that' s why they (Google, Redhat, Canonical and a few other companies) embracing the new LibreOffice, a fork of OpenOffice.
About X.Org, to be honest I'm not that sure but I am sure that Firefox, OpenOffice, KDE, VLC etc.. are not community coded.
And you missed my whole point 'bout Supercomputers :)
But.. i´m not defending just Linux, I´m talking about Open Source, Linux is just maybe the most known soft of Open Source but there are others. Have you heard about Firefox? (a web browser developed by that programers in their spare time (lol when a red that!)) or Apache web server? (the web server that allow us such a funny time?) Have you ever developed software?
Have you heard about eclipse? an IDE based on plugins extensible to the infinite! (also developed by that friends of us, people programing at their spare time, lol)?
Didn't I prove nothing? sure? read my fisrt posts in this dialog, please!
You have a bad expirience with your hardware while using Linux. it was just by chance. Hardware fails, sometimes!
Have you heard about TOAD (toolkit for oracle)? It's commercial software to adminster and develop Oracle DB. There is an Open Sorce Alternative called (TORA). That guy developed TORA in they spare time, really! I know what? TOAD people hired him (LOL)! they should be... No! They are definetly CRAZY! How a guy that develops in his spare time is going to be good enough!
I will continue using open source (Linux and others...) hoping big coprs can't break that philosophy. Because know what?
While Commercial software companies primary target is to earn money (and offer software solutions, off course) Open Source is based on offer solutions, the money (may be secundary, in some cases)
People programing in "their spare time" are enginiers most of the time that love to code, to code in polite form (remember that their code is accesible all over the world) and their motivation is to offer solutions.
Never again say Linux (and open source) is programmed by "people in their spare time that are not good" It's at least ...hilarous.
there are good and bad developers, but at every where that afirmation is true, even at Microsoft (IExplorer, Vista...)
Linux gives you more power over your computer. Windows limits what you can and can't do on your system. I can't speak for OS X obviously noticing I won't touch it.
I've been using Linux for a while now so I don't remember everything. But, from what I remember having admin rights problems even though I was the admin. Files would lock up, or even the entire system because a file wouldn't read or delete. One program stops responding and pending the program the system lags or even comes to a near freeze. At times, I even had to use command line to bypass certain GUI limitations. There's more but can't remember everything. Linux never gives me those issues.
I have had Pidgin lock up on ubuntu and Swap 3 gigs... I'll tell you what that crippled the OS. Linux was fucked. Xorg crashed and it almost burnt my board. Never again linux. Ever.
Use the commandline to bypass GUI limitations? Don't even talk to me about commandline. When Xorg dies on linux commandline is what you must use to fix it.
I don't like Ubuntu. I've tried it but it did lots of stuff for me and I like to do the work to learn. Ubuntu is more for new Linux users (in my eyes). You should try something new. I use Mandriva and don't have issues.
Xorg failes and you had to use command line....really!?!? I had no idea. Lol. I've messed with Xorg in command line countless times. When I first installed my GeForce driver, it had issues so I had to use command line to fix it.
Huge OpenBSD fan. It is the only OS done right from the ground up. But I use OS X because OpenBSD sucks at modern day compatibility. Oh well OS X is part BSD anyway.
Well, I've tried FreeBSD on my system before and after install everything, I couldn't get the X server to start at all. I've read through the tutorials on BSD site and looked elsewhere for help, but still come up with no answer. How did you get X server started on OpenBSD? Because on FreeBSD, by default it starts in command line mode, but "startx" doesn't work after installing X server and all it's options. Is there something I'm missing?
Sounds a little odd... Maybe a graphics card problem? Screen problem perhaps? Not really sure. I usually install Xorg then KDE4 on top of that. Then I add kdm in the daemons for autostart on bootup. Of course I tried that with OpenBSD. I have never really tried FreeBSD.
You know what..I think you just answered my question. When I installed X server, I'm not sure I actually installed Gnome over it which would explain the issue. I have been able to get the X server running once or twice before..but always got a weird screen at best. I now need to figure out how to ensure I install GDM over the X server. Once that's done, I'll have my GUI. Thanks for the help on that.
Have you ever tried to administer an OS in GUI mode using a slow connection?
GUI layer is a limitation in most of cases. In an GUI centered OS if GUI fails you are... in troubles. X server is a service that allows you to work with graphics don you need it? don't start it! If fails? try to fix it from other scenario (command line) the rest of your services can run an serve your users.
Try to automate precesses in gui mode, you will be jailed to GUI possibilities, "command line jail" has more room because it was the origin the rest services. It's uncomfortable? maybe. watch you an 80 old years man using the mouse. Its a matter of practise and knowledgement!
Xorg is nothing to brag about. It is async which means it doesn't update the full frame at once. This leads to flicker and tear. This is good when running Xorg over a network, but on the desktop, it is an annoyance. A bad one. Movies tear games tear everything tears. Xorg has problems with drivers as well. It is being re-written so it is getting changed almost every release. This breaks drivers and turns it into hell for your average desktop user.
An incredible OS that uses natively TCP/IP? An incredible bunch of software from desktop apps to ghrapics and sound and off course huge bunch of software development tools packaged in the distro?
(by the way, due to the GNU license and similars (the obligation to offer the source code) ALL the rest OS win mac OS,... are able to port that sotfware too but not in a genuine way linux does. I mean,
Thankyou for that very cultured and educated reply, you obviously seem a very intelligent person, so I guess we should all just drop Linux this very moment.
The fact here is that people (you) are talking shit about (what a thought) is a very well done OS (for its reliability and for what it represents to software development paradigm). Its very sad to read peoples´ comments that seems to know nothing about what it represents. That´s the reason for "...intelligence people at the front..."
You don´t like it?(do you really know it?) don´t it.
Windows and Mac plainly suck. I use Windows a lot and when I get onto Ubuntu (linux), total sigh of relief. I find my CPU is not overclocked and it looks nicer. It can generally do the same or better than Windows.
of course and, linux will also run on apple/mac... linux will allways run on computers and most electronic devices. to include us government, dod and, secret services deploys linux
Linus Torvalds originally developed the Linux kernel as a hobby OS for the Intel 80386 CPU, incorporating elements from MINIX, although with entirely new code. Don't speak unless you have shit of an idea what ur saying.
Did you make this video in Linux? If so, Linux must be much better at video editing than I thought. I'm new to Linux and I dabble in Adobe Premiere and After Effects in Windows, but I can't make anything that good in Windows. (Not that it can't be done in Adobe, just that I'm an amateur.)
probably. theres the same for linux as there is for mac or windows. you can run most win apps in linux using wine, and if you cant im sure theres one as good if not better for linux. just look at all the option under graphics in add/remove programs (at least 50 apps)
No i didn't. It was done in window with max. It could be done in maya (it can run on unix-like boxes) or it could be done in blender (3D software 100% open source) that also run on linux, windows,.... I'm not sure if there is an alternative for the other software. I'm not a graphic designer so I don't spent too much time of that stuff. I'm a software developer in that context things are different, don't you think?
oh. by the way if you find alternatives let me know :)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
tengo mis motivos y mas bien respetelos. tengo una muy mala experiencia con linux. mis disculpas, pero respete mi desicion. translate it. : I have my reasons and respected me. I have a very bad experience with linux. My apologies, but respected my decision.
yeah, you have to be an enthusiast to even begin to use linux. linux is not for one minded people. ubuntu is easy for noobs esp. the 7.10 version. other than that, I recommend linux to anyone who is willing to learn a solid OS.
Just because something is the best seller does not make it the best. That just means they know how to take peoples money. Like you said, you tested Linux, try using it next time and see the difference. Read the TCP/IP code in windows and you will know they stole it from UNIX.
I DISAGREE WITH YOU SMALL ******* I BET YOU NEVER EVEN TRIED LINUX BECAUSE YOUR TOO SCARED THAT SOMETHING MIGHT HAPPEN OR YOU JUST WANT TO WASTE YOUR LIFE PLAYING STUPID SHOOTER GAMES.
WINDOWS IS A GREAT PLAYSTATION BUT IT's DEFINATELY --NOT-- A GOOD CHOICE AS A --REAL-- PC. I PLAY IRAQ WHEN I C WINDOWS!!!!!LINUX=Allah
how much does a vista OS license costs? (piracy is not an alternative) besides a hi-tech-like GUI(which requires speed) and software to find any PHOTO or MP3 that fits perfeclty to disastrous user does it has useable software. An OS is not only a search engine with a cool look and feel
Is not only the fact that windows crashes whiout doing nothing, but everything in the system is hidden. Why or how this or that works? you know it? neither me. And what about the tools that it offer? I you want it for playing games thats ok.
Look, i already posted ealier on that Linux kicks ass at server side and grid-computing/web-services. Having worked on the latter, i know, ok. (Too bad i don't know much about Windows Server 2003 functionalities). Oh well, I'll look into GNOME. Thanks. Yesterday I found something called Fedora.
Actually i'm forced to use it at uni. Linux is so labour intensive: having to mount a usb stick (aren't we in the plug-n-play era), unzipping and the flurry of options -o e... etc. i want my time spent on solving real problems and not "Linux's RTFM".
really? you look like a little bit lazy. In fact windowing progrmas do the same (a lot of options at the end of the command). What about an ALIAS to the most used commands? alias="doSomethig -a -e -i -o -u ..." or a shell script
U mentioned that u used 3DS Max for the above rendering. I wonder what OS it runs on, eh? Out of the 3D packages, did u pick 3DS b'coz of its user-friendliness and power? Well, for me Linux is just power and user-Unfriendliness. I'm a programmer, the OS shouldn't add up to my problem list.
I a programar too, and and sys admin. The reason I used 3dmax was that times I didn know blender or maya for linux.
In a normal distribution how many languages and tools can you find? A lot of them and in windows? ZERO.
What about the system/networking tools? the same and also in linux or unix system you can use a lot of them (sys tools) via line command and remotely can you do the same in clean windows install?
i didn't leave the MS-DOS screen decades ago to go back into it through something called Linux. Even though i agree Linux kicks ass at stuff like server side and grid computing stuff.
Sorry but only in a command line you can really tune up your system. One more thing: the Linux shell is much more powerful that DOS command line. If you never used it, you can't talk about it!
Great Video! I am a happy 'buntu user here.

Xorg failes and you had to use command line....really!?!? I had no idea. Lol. I've messed with Xorg in command line countless times. When I first installed my GeForce driver, it had issues so I had to use command line to fix it.
By the way, it's /etc/X11/xorg.conf :)
pyro1flame 2 years ago
I don't use ubuntu. Look at my tutorials. I used Arch Linux until moving to OS X. OS X is much more UNIX.
JamesManes 2 years ago
I noticed your page says OS X/ OpenBSD...you tried BSD?
pyro1flame 2 years ago
Huge OpenBSD fan. It is the only OS done right from the ground up. But I use OS X because OpenBSD sucks at modern day compatibility. Oh well OS X is part BSD anyway.
JamesManes 2 years ago
Well, I've tried FreeBSD on my system before and after install everything, I couldn't get the X server to start at all. I've read through the tutorials on BSD site and looked elsewhere for help, but still come up with no answer. How did you get X server started on OpenBSD? Because on FreeBSD, by default it starts in command line mode, but "startx" doesn't work after installing X server and all it's options. Is there something I'm missing?
pyro1flame 2 years ago
Sounds a little odd... Maybe a graphics card problem? Screen problem perhaps? Not really sure. I usually install Xorg then KDE4 on top of that. Then I add kdm in the daemons for autostart on bootup. Of course I tried that with OpenBSD. I have never really tried FreeBSD.
JamesManes 2 years ago
You know what..I think you just answered my question. When I installed X server, I'm not sure I actually installed Gnome over it which would explain the issue. I have been able to get the X server running once or twice before..but always got a weird screen at best. I now need to figure out how to ensure I install GDM over the X server. Once that's done, I'll have my GUI. Thanks for the help on that.
pyro1flame 2 years ago
Have you ever tried to administer an OS in GUI mode using a slow connection?
GUI layer is a limitation in most of cases. In an GUI centered OS if GUI fails you are... in troubles. X server is a service that allows you to work with graphics don you need it? don't start it! If fails? try to fix it from other scenario (command line) the rest of your services can run an serve your users.
nachogarciaescudero 2 years ago
Part 2
Try to automate precesses in gui mode, you will be jailed to GUI possibilities, "command line jail" has more room because it was the origin the rest services. It's uncomfortable? maybe. watch you an 80 old years man using the mouse. Its a matter of practise and knowledgement!
In linux GUI leans in command line!
nachogarciaescudero 2 years ago
Xorg is nothing to brag about. It is async which means it doesn't update the full frame at once. This leads to flicker and tear. This is good when running Xorg over a network, but on the desktop, it is an annoyance. A bad one. Movies tear games tear everything tears. Xorg has problems with drivers as well. It is being re-written so it is getting changed almost every release. This breaks drivers and turns it into hell for your average desktop user.

Part 1
An incredible OS that uses natively TCP/IP? An incredible bunch of software from desktop apps to ghrapics and sound and off course huge bunch of software development tools packaged in the distro?
(by the way, due to the GNU license and similars (the obligation to offer the source code) ALL the rest OS win mac OS,... are able to port that sotfware too but not in a genuine way linux does. I mean,

Windows and Mac plainly suck. I use Windows a lot and when I get onto Ubuntu (linux), total sigh of relief. I find my CPU is not overclocked and it looks nicer. It can generally do the same or better than Windows.

Did you make this video in Linux? If so, Linux must be much better at video editing than I thought. I'm new to Linux and I dabble in Adobe Premiere and After Effects in Windows, but I can't make anything that good in Windows. (Not that it can't be done in Adobe, just that I'm an amateur.)
adanedhel728 4 years ago
you dont make something like that in linux. linux is an OS. its the software that counts
jrockpunk1 3 years ago
Well, what I meant is that I didn't know there was software for Linux that would be able to make a video like that.
adanedhel728 3 years ago
probably. theres the same for linux as there is for mac or windows. you can run most win apps in linux using wine, and if you cant im sure theres one as good if not better for linux. just look at all the option under graphics in add/remove programs (at least 50 apps)
jrockpunk1 3 years ago
No i didn't. It was done in window with max. It could be done in maya (it can run on unix-like boxes) or it could be done in blender (3D software 100% open source) that also run on linux, windows,.... I'm not sure if there is an alternative for the other software. I'm not a graphic designer so I don't spent too much time of that stuff. I'm a software developer in that context things are different, don't you think?
oh. by the way if you find alternatives let me know :)

My recommendation would be to make an educated estimation of usage requirements of both OS's.
I'd even go so far to suggest having a Windows gaming rigg, and another rigg (Linux) for browsing to minimize spyware and trojans.
And dont listen to zealots ;)
Make up your own mind.
Listen to opinions, but always test them for validity yourself.

Just because something is the best seller does not make it the best. That just means they know how to take peoples money. Like you said, you tested Linux, try using it next time and see the difference. Read the TCP/IP code in windows and you will know they stole it from UNIX.

Is not only the fact that windows crashes whiout doing nothing, but everything in the system is hidden. Why or how this or that works? you know it? neither me. And what about the tools that it offer? I you want it for playing games thats ok.
nachogarciaescudero 4 years ago
Look, i already posted ealier on that Linux kicks ass at server side and grid-computing/web-services. Having worked on the latter, i know, ok. (Too bad i don't know much about Windows Server 2003 functionalities). Oh well, I'll look into GNOME. Thanks. Yesterday I found something called Fedora.

more "user friendliness" they put less fredom you have
nachogarciaescudero 4 years ago
natasha HaVE YOU HEARD ABOUT GNOME?
nachogarciaescudero 4 years ago
Actually i'm forced to use it at uni. Linux is so labour intensive: having to mount a usb stick (aren't we in the plug-n-play era), unzipping and the flurry of options -o e... etc. i want my time spent on solving real problems and not "Linux's RTFM".
Natasha26 4 years ago
really? you look like a little bit lazy. In fact windowing progrmas do the same (a lot of options at the end of the command). What about an ALIAS to the most used commands? alias="doSomethig -a -e -i -o -u ..." or a shell script
nachogarciaescudero 4 years ago
U mentioned that u used 3DS Max for the above rendering. I wonder what OS it runs on, eh? Out of the 3D packages, did u pick 3DS b'coz of its user-friendliness and power? Well, for me Linux is just power and user-Unfriendliness. I'm a programmer, the OS shouldn't add up to my problem list.
Natasha26 4 years ago
I a programar too, and and sys admin. The reason I used 3dmax was that times I didn know blender or maya for linux.
In a normal distribution how many languages and tools can you find? A lot of them and in windows? ZERO.
What about the system/networking tools? the same and also in linux or unix system you can use a lot of them (sys tools) via line command and remotely can you do the same in clean windows install?
nachogarciaescudero 4 years ago
hmm...In ubuntu I just plug in a sub drive/camera and it mounts automagically!

i didn't leave the MS-DOS screen decades ago to go back into it through something called Linux. Even though i agree Linux kicks ass at stuff like server side and grid computing stuff.
Natasha26 5 years ago
Sorry but only in a command line you can really tune up your system. One more thing: the Linux shell is much more powerful that DOS command line. If you never used it, you can't talk about it!
