There are four people you get to play as in Fatal Frame 4.

In Fatal Frame 1 There are Mafuyu And Miku (Two Characters)

In Fatal Frame 2 There are Mio and Mayu (Two Characters too)

In Fatal Frame 3 There are Rei, Kei and Miku again (3 Characters)

In Fatal frame 4 There are 4 Characters but the 1st i don't know if we can identify her as a character because she dies fast so after the introduction she is no longer a "people in danger in a haunted place" (unlike Mafuyu who is still alive, but he is uses as a introduction too).

ps: i like how with the two guys in the series so far (not including mafuyu since you barely controlled him) the creators basically gave them the short end of the stick XD. kei had a weak camera and a 'hide' ability, and this poor bastard has a flashlight.

It's a dude! Cheering! Being a girl myself, I love the "strong" female protagonists in Fatal Frame, but a little testosterone balances everything out nicely.

Choshiro isn't a typical pretty boy either! He's a man! A manly man! =D

I think the producers blended in silent hill, the only thing that it is missing is some malee weapons and a radio. (when you think about it, it is about the same) it has the static in the back ground too!

Well, if there was just the flashlight obscura, it would be darn too simple, no? Cause all you have to do is keep shining on the ghost and he/she will screw and go away. Game completed time 30 mins :P Takes lots of game play out :P
