I saw the interviews. ALL HE SAID was that he wanted it to be like a scared animal far from it's natural habitat and that he SEES IT LIKE A LOST BABY THAT JUST WOKE UP AND IS SEARCHING FOR HIS MOTHER. He never said it WAS a baby and there is no reason to believe it is a baby and that the sequel (which may never be made) will have a mother alien searching for it. People don't seem to pay attention to interviews and think EVERYTHINGS a "wink" of secret info. He was making EXAMPLES.

That's why in the scene where the camera is at beach, if you look really closely, you see in the top right corner, something splashing down into the water. apparently that's when the monster arrived.

Maybe it was because they were out of water, or a more likely theory, that the dangers of the city (fire, explosions, heavy artillery) drew them off the monster and away from the danger, then they probably reproduced, which would explain the high number of them in the city.
