Control scheme ported straight from Resident Evil 4? No.

There is one simple difference which makes Dead Space scores above Resident Evil 4 or 5: the ability to move while aiming and firing your weapon.

Outside of that little tiff regarding your control analysis, I agree with the review that only the slightest matters held this game back from being a ten out of ten (back in '09).

Influenced...not 'ported straight from'.

The latter implies a lackluster copy of the earlier title, and while there is a notable influence, you cannot deny the differences between RE and Dead Space, particularly, the improvements to the third person shooter, survival horror formula that Dead Space 1 brought to the table as opposed to more recent Resident Evil titles (Dead Space 2 improves combat among other things with the sacrifice of the horror).

@razorniels i own dead space 1 (just picked it up today) and have not played it yet nor have I played dead space 2... But I can tell you even without playing any dead space games that yes you should buy dead space 1.

Why? Well thats easy... Dead space 1 is discontinued meaning you CANNOT buy a new copy. Used at EBGames is $8 Canadian so around $6 american. If this game is as good as everyone says then thats one fucking amazing price. Go to your local EBGames/GameStop and get it used.

I downloaded the game. Couldn't key map what I wanted and then found out that the dlc are not available so I contacted EA and had it refunded. Kind of sucks because I wanted to play it but being a lefty makes the arrows keys a must for direction. Have fun.

Before I buy this...one question...I play with my left hand on the directional keys and use the outer number pad keys, delete, end, etc. I read that there were problems with keymapping. If so...would that cause me issues. Thanks.

I was looking for a next gen survival horror game, and really couldn't find much until I played this game. It does have its moments of suspense, as an original biohazard fan I would say this game comes closest to being like the survival horror resident evils.

This game WAS NOT scary and i played it at midnight and beat it. The only things that STARTLED me was when everything is quiet and then something REALLY load happens. Dead space pulls that bullshit a lot during the game. However it was a good game even though a few levels were annoying. Condemned is definantly scariest game i ever played

From a horror perspective, what Dead Space wants to be after all, this game dethroned Resident Evil and even Silent Hill by a long shot. They're not even in the same league.

Definitely the scariest game I've played since... well, can't even remember. :D

If you're not put off by the silent non-charismatic idiot of a main character nobody can possibly refer to, absolutely fantastic game.

Even though this is one of the most ambitious games I've ever seen (Zero G combat, time manipulation as a combat skill, VERY unique ideas for weapons) and it does it well, the thing that really sets it apart is the detail in everything you see.The graphics are fantastic and there are all sorts of strange writings the walls, many in a different language, but all of them mean something.

Dead Space was scary to begin because I felt weak just being a repairman with no weapon. Later on tho you become too overpowered which takes the horror away, bosses were too easy aswell :(

truthfully, this game was not that scary. It had moments of jumping, but not that many. The only part that actually made me nearly drop the controller out my hands was when you first encounter the Brute. It depends. I find psychological horror more scary than "boo!" scary. And this game is filled with the "boo" kind of scares. I'm I saying that boo scary is not scary? simply put, no. But it is more unsettling when is psychological horror.
