"I saw the same "main" tangle malfunction, over and over. Is that a packing error"?
It can be both a packing error or it can just "happen". I've seen my canopy come out straight, be open and then start to twist up. I've never had line twists where I had to chop and go to the reserve. These chutes are all sport / higher performance chutes which when twisted they start to spin fast, whereas mine is more square and when twisted doesn't spin allowing me to kick out of it.
reserves are way more docile...you can bury the toggle and it doesnt spin you as much...they generaly have a longer glide capability....my one flies completely different to my main
Damn... Those were som bad ass twists... I recently experienced something like it on a rented rig, but luckily managed to kick it out, only to discover a hole the size of a tennis ball on the top skin of the canopy! It didn't get any bigger on the way down though, so I handed in the rig and kindly asked for another one :)
you know what sucks the most... I HAD A MALFUNCTION ON MY FIRST SOLO!! lol , i didnt cut tho , i just pulled the brakes and the parachute was fine : / , what sucks is that all i could do is land in a soy bean farm after all that lol , fun times at skydive tecumseh!!
Maybe you had a problem with returning the slider (that's not a malfunction though) instead of line twist. You can't cope with the line twist pulling the brakes ;)
What's up with all the line twists? (I know that was already asked). Well, I slipped off the strut on my second solo jump last time. Two jumps set for this Sunday though. I hope that's as bad as I screw up! LOL
I'm kind of nervous for the day that is going to happen to me! I'm a reserve virgin, so naturally I'm a little anxious... Then again it will be kind of nice to finally have the experience (and the confidence) of knowing that I have successfully flown a reserve.
I have been through a lot of training, but still, there's nothing like experience!
Usually the reserve itself isn't any harder to fly, there's just a lot of anxiety involved with handling an emergency situation and undergoing the fear of a major malfunction. A canopy malfunction is a big deal- you're in a life threatening situation and you have to take the appropriate action in order to save your ass. (usually this involves cutting away and deploying your reserve.) I'm confident in my canopy control, but when my rig malfunctions and I have 20 seconds to bounce- it's a big deal
Understandable. I'm just getting into the sport, so I was wondering if there was any intrinsic difference in controling a reserve vs. a main. I'm trying to conduct as much research as possible before actually starting an AFF course so as to minimize looking like a complete jackass ;) Any tips?
My main advice is... listen to your instructors! They will give you the best advice possible, and will teach you all about how to deal with malfunctions and how to avoid them. They can cater training to you!
Avoid low turns at ALL costs! On my AFF 3 I hooked low and ended up sprawled across the taxi-way. Trust me, I looked like a jackass! (And it hurt like hell.) Unfortunately most students make a mistake or two, but it's part of learning. Good luck! :) You can email if you have any questions!
I'm a beginner too. I've got 24 jumps now. No matter how hard you try you'll still look like jackass more than just once. I almost hit a tree on my AFF 8 and the whole DZ saw it. Another beginner (31st jump) hit a Mercedes Benz in the parking lot causing a huge dent. Remember, If you think you're gonna hit something "feet and knees together". LOL. Shit happens. Don't be too criticle with yourself, just be safe.
Money got short this year, so I may have to postpone it for a while. It's not so much the training that concerns me (as far as money goes anyway), it's afterwards... having to buy my own rig in order to remain current and all that.... Any suggestions? By the way, what is your opinion of AFF vs. Tandem progression/AFF?
WTF, its the same footage over and over again. If I wanted to watch it again, I would hit replay, ass.

Haha you must get used to line twist now?

It seems I saw the same "main" tangle malfunction, over and over. Is that a packing error, or do this main have a tendency to do this? B-6370

That last one was scary. I'm keeping my hands OUT of the risers if it is still spinning up. Last place you wanna be is unable to chop........

My problem was I thought a few lines were cut and I was taught to cut away but I flared and it was just the front left side was folded over.

I concur! But what is that he's doing with the brake? Unstowing it? I had a line-twist mal recently and thus this greatly interests me...

Gotta love a high performance canopy that needs to be cutaway due to line twists.

If this is one guy who has all these malfunctions then you must be a very lucky man.

Is flying a reserve harder than flying the main?
