Sorry to find out about your hearing condition - I wish you well for the future mate.
Proud of you for trying.
I was in the forces in the early 90's and miss the outdoor nights - im hoping to do the same this Saturday and film it all to go onto youtube soon.
I agree with your inspirations like Pete (mindwiseman) & Mike (armouredcockroach) for me are good eggs - they have both been major factors in my decision to get more involved in bushcraft & "GET OUT THERE" as they say.
Fantastic stuff bud, Really really really enjoyed that :) Hope you enjoyed your overnighter! I wish i had a companion ( Dog ) to accompany me on my journeys!
@tallpaulbenedict Go for it Paul.Experience the solitude and quietness, and the hint of awkwardness that you sometimes get when your camping somewhere you shouldn't !!
@g0vqw , Yes I hope to get out soon too, I do have permission for one woods near me, but it seems to be used by teenage drinkers of an evening, so thats no good for me, I will find somewhere. many thanks Sandy :-)
This is a very good vid! You must be a real outdoorsman to love camping in the wild, on your own during nighttime. Keep a sharp lookout, now you've confessed to being a law-breaker, they might come after you! Since SBL been caught, they've got lots of time!
Very nice video. Loved the views and the music of the forest. Your very humble as you appear to be very comfortable out in the forest and seem like an old hand at it. Yes, The Mindwiseman Pete is a huge inspiration for me as well. Love his videos too.
Well despite now living on the edge of a town,I grew up in a small village and even now work outdoors on a farm.So I am used to countryside things I guess. But to spend the night in a wood is wonderful.
Thanks very much mate for making this video, it is so natural and unscripted. My absolute favorite activity when in the woods is to listen to the "Morning Chorus" and rain falling on the tarp. My wife has two hearing aids also, and hearing loss is common in her family, so your comment about hearing the "Morning Chorus" while you still can, really hit a chord inside of me. I was thinking just the other day that of all my senses, hearing is the one I want would want to lose last..
Thanks Barefootschild,Unfortunately my hearing is due to a tumour on my acoustic nerve.I had surgery a few years ago to remove the first one now it's back,so having regular MRI scans.
Yes,the sound of rain on the tarp is just so wonderful.I love camping in the rain. Then the sounds of the dawn chorus and the damp earthy smell. It makes you feel very alive!
Hi there Sandy. I really enjoyed watching this genuinely unpretentious and refreshing video. So glad that you feel inspired to enjoy the great outdoors along with your great little mutt. You're never too old to enjoy and experience real 'life' and to thirst for adventure and new experiences outside the mainstream towns, cities, rat race, etc. I hope that your experiences prove rewarding and immensely satisfying. As a relative newcomer to bushcraft myself I know where you're coming from. Best, D
I just had to get out there and experience nature close up.Even tho I work outside on a farm, this is'nt enough for me.The only problem is wild camping in most parts of England is illegal, hence the cammo tarp!I hope your adventures are as rewarding as this was.I hope to go out again soon and will try and shoot another video.
Nice video, it’s been awhile since I’ve done any ‘real’ backpacking. However your video has sparked an interest in doing at least some short trips. Good info on the use of knots and stowing the ropes with the hank. Good idea.
BTW: it sure looks like you’ve got the makings of a good squirrel dog there!
Every now and then I have to get close to nature.Even tho I am 48.I hope I will still do this kind of thing when I get to 88!I am going to try a hammock soon! Also some backwoods qrp sounds a good idea.Plenty of trees to hang a wire.Yes,Elsa would like to play with the squirrels. My other dog Jess would just chomp them if she could catch one!
I know Bivi's and basha's aren't for everyone, but I slept soundly warm and dry.A good way to see nature. Also because the gear was cheap,if it got damaged I wouldn't get too upset!
So I shall be doing more of this and hope to combine it with some qrp radio.
Heyup Sandy, nice one! I'm sure you'll recce new places to try or have a stealthy regular place/area. Nice simple content to your vid, bird song and views were really clear. Nice sense of where you were. Wholesome kit, wildlife, trangia brew, dog companion....all good stuff. Sorry to know your declining hearing, let's hope it stays as best as poss' for a long time to come, I trully hope so. Out in nature sharpens our instincts. Happy to have inspired you, well done m8. Cheers - Mav' Pete
I'm so pleased you enjoyed this vid.I'm going to get some cheap cammo netting soon because some of the places I have in mind dictate covert camping operations!Ha hah
I just felt the need to experience the outdoors more fully.I guess you could say it's kind of adventure. Now age 48 I need adventure more than ever.Life can become too full of work, worry, mortgages, bills etc..
@thenrylee I am by no means an expert, but by configuring your tarp the way I have done it is easier to fold the tarp when striking camp, also there is no risk of chafing or destroying the waterproofing on the ridge of the tarp.My tarp has eye's and loops to allow it to be installed in this fashion.
@thenrylee Having the ridge line under the tarp can cause heavy down pours of rain water to run along the line under the tarp and drip into the footprint space i.e. under the tarp.
Very cool. It looks like you and your dog had a great time. I have the Trangia stove and the MSR Titan kettle. It's a good cook system. Keep on keepin on.
I really like my Trangia setup.Nothing to go wrong. The burner it'self holds enough fuel for several brewups. The only thing to look out for is the wind. These stoves perform much better when screened from draughts. Also the Titan kettle is just great.Strong and lightweight, but I don't like drinking from it so use a smaller enamelled mug.
Thanks so much for the nice comment. It's a great thing if you can combine your love of the outdoors with a wonderful hobby.I also have plans to do a qrp overnighter too.Watch this space.
Glad you enjoyed your first night out. There is the right to Rome act in the the uk so have a look into it. Wild camping ant like you moving in with you caravan. 73s, from m3cvo
I only wish the laws on wild camping were the same as in Scotland.Still must exercise caution as some land is used for shooting and I don't want to be part of the bag!
Thumbs Up! Really enjoyed watching your video, thanks for sharing Sandy.
Your camera picked up the dawn chorus fine and you got a good shot of that squirrel, your dog would have been after that one if she could!
It's really great to get feedback and see the skills & knowledge we share being used & thanks for sharing it on, no doubt others will watch and learn something from your video. All the best,
I'm so pleased you gave my video the thumbs up.I hope this will be the first of many wild camps. Thanks to you and others the knowledge you have shared through the medium of Youtube has made my experience very positive.I now feel much more confident.Thankyou Ashley.
