  • I was born in N.E Georgia in the foothills of the great appalachian mountians songs like these were, what we were raised on.My great granfather born in 1867 was born in Corbin K.y.who taught them to my granfather and so on.People call us rednecks, hillbillies etc..But they don't know music and that these songs are brought from Euroupe with all our anscesters. The music is a part of all of us.Watch there movie The songcatcher it is wonderful. It tells the story of this wonderful music

  • Who is the other artist singing with Ralph? Awesome job who ever!

  • i officially annex the upper peninsula of michigan to the southern states.

  • @wwcharles76 I was born & raised in Michigan and thank you for the annexing but I think I will stay in SE Ky where its a bit warmer, both weather & people, lol

  • indescribable!

  • Jen Titus version to me Is better ^^"""

  • Great Song

  • I never heard this song with music never always Acappella. Harlan Kentucky

  • @royalmurdock Barbourville/Corbin area but dad's mother came from Bloody Harlan from the Ray clan, married a Stanley from Virginia. Her mother was from the North clan, was born in Little Rock Ark. after the Trail of Tears took her ancestors there. I grew up with a variety of music, & bluegrass was just one of the genre played around the house. I always heard this song Acappella too, with the exception of when guests came in & played instruments. Ralph's is the best I ever heard.

  • thats some cool as tunes .......

  • No offense, but the song sounds too jolly

  • I am sure I hear the late great Keith Whitley singing with Ralph. Awesome !!!

  • 1 person died

  • R.I.P. Papas who passed away last night. Best Granddad anyone could have asked for. Love you xxxxxxxxxx

  • @Haterkiller i wish you long life

  • What a bitter-sweet song.

  • proud to have roots in eastern kentucky

  • I have heard a lot of versions of this song. And this has to be my favorite arrrangement. It makes me think. Listening to this I hope when death comes for me I can have the dignity that Mister Stanley Sings with.

  • awesome song...the pictures are great too

  • Death is an old man with faded overalls, work boots, a patched up cowboy hat, and an old farm scythe.

  • Wow Haterkiller, some very nice photos you put to this. (though I admit, I didn't understand butterfly man or the bears). Nevertheless....I'm going to have a look at your tunes since you are grounded enough and have ears to recognize true human music. =)

  • @Moonchalice Blessed love :-)

  • @Moonchalice Aaah I just remembered who the Butterfly man is!! It's Harry Smith, the guy who compiled the Anthology of American Folk Music. That's why he's in there :)

  • @Haterkiller And the bears are there coz it's mountain music :)

  • @Haterkiller Thanks for the update on butterfly man and the bears. So sorry about your Papas. We lost a very special old person in our family just about the same time as you. Now, the song to listen to is "I'll Fly Away" =) Cheers to you.

  • Gives me goosebumps!!! The high, keening voice of Ralph Stanley gets me every time.

  • My dad died of a brain tumor. Same identical symptoms, but over a year or so. Terrible thing to see. Wish he would've been spared another year, but kinda glad he wasn't. It awful for both sides. I wouldn't wish that death on anyone.

  • @emdixon1987 Rest in Peace

  • Ahhhhh homeboy music for a hillbilly like me.

  • I've been born and raised in deep Texas, this song is so perfect for the South.

  • @BANGuzman For real, and yet i'm a British guy whose never seen the South but believe me I feel this one

  • Awesome is all I can say!!!! Thank the lord for Dr. Ralph Stanley!!

  • God how I love this!!

    thanks!!

  • this is the true country jam

  • Originally they had no separation b/t blue grass, gossip and country music since the music covers all the aspects of living such as pain, love and courage. They only separate later b/c they wanted to make sure each group was defined by a racial grp as if all things that happen to everyone is defined by race not by just living

  • By the way apologies for the 3 minute silence after the song! Fucked up but doesn't detract from the song

  • Dude.

    This song is phenomenal.

I'm 18, and it makes my eyes teary. Shit like this grabs my soul.

Blues, whether you call it whatever you do ahaha

    This is downhome, whiteboy blues.

  • @blueeyedsoldier100 Yes brother music has no colour.

  • @blueeyedsoldier100 No it's not. I appreciate the fact that you like the song, but this is not blues my friend, this is BLUEGRASS. If you want whiteboy blues, look up seasick steve, or watermelon slim.

  • FINALLY!!!

    I found this version.

People keep looking at me like I'm crazy when i ask if they know where I can find it.

They're like "the only version of this song is the one from the movie 'o brother where art though"... and I'm sitting there thinking, uhh I have, er had, the cd... I know for a fact there's another verision. lol

  • @Kelsie154 Yes bro, I couldn't find this version anywhere after hearing it on a documentary so I bought a copy and uploaded it

  • amazing. thank you so much for this upload!!!!!

  • @bossisdead Your welcome man, if you want to do me a real favour go and check out the music I make - search for "Batman is a Rasta" or "Smiley London Storms", those are my tunes. 1 Love x
