I shower at the gym in the men's locker room. I've been on T for a couple years and have had top surgery but nothing else. The shower is just one big room with several nozzles and a sauna. And Swedish men all just walk around in their birthday suits even if they're just drying their hair. Soooo I do the same :) I work out and shower there 3 times a week. No one has ever said a word to me about it. Guys just don't comment on each other's junk.
@sillyyetsuccinct Haha, a couple of friends of mine from Sweden mentioned this too. One time, we were at a hot-spring in Japan with a group of international students, and you're supposed to bathe naked those. The Swedish students just stripped off and jumped in, and everyone else just stood there being awkward for the longest time. It was so funny. XD
I know a transguy who showers at the gym without covering up. He was fine several times until someone laughed at him. But he said he never really got any comments or disrespect. My work-ou bud and I (non trans) never shower at the gym :p
@aryanvaryan I don't know, I'd say laughing at someone else's body because it's different is pretty disrespectful. Does he still feel okay with showering in men's spaces after that? It'd be such a damn shame if that one guy just ruined it all for him.
@JJFanshawe Yeah. Completely agree. He never got disrespected until then. He stopped showering at the gym because he didn't want his fellow students to find out he was trans by meeting them in the shower... I applaud his (and your courrage). Def feel very exposed in a public shower :p Maybe some day I'll do it too.... :)
Massive kudos to you! Not only was that a hugely courageous thing to do, but that was an act of activism right there. Maybe one day we'll live in a world where this won't be an issue. A guy can dream...
@alexhaney100 Thanks! Hopefully I'll get to the point some time where I don't feel so anxious about covering up immediately after, but I still need to work on that.
@Driktulhu Yeah, you told me about going to - I think it was a sauna? - once and it not being a problem. Is that just you or the place where you live being awesome? Do I need to come to Sweden now? ;)
Bravo, that was a really cool story and I'm glad you shared. I currently live in dorms at my college, and every morning I am unbelievably thankful that most of the bathrooms/showers are gender neutral.
ha, i used to go to the gym by my house over here on a daily basis with my girlfriend. this was pre-testosterone. and i passed possibly 70-80% of the time. my trainer thought i was a male, even though on my id it said otherwise, he sometimes called me a female too and corrected himself. i guess he knew what i preferred. and i used to use the mens locker room to change. they had individual stalls for showering lol youre brave for even trying it, sorry for the awkward moment haha
@TransMansable That's great! I don't think I passed that much pre-T. It's good that so many people just automatically got your pronouns right and didn't question you.
@IsThatEtchas Don't worry about it. It took me sooo long to get to this point. Take everything step by step at your own speed and you'll do more than enough already. :)
Thanks for sharing. This was really positive and brave of you. It's nice to see such positivity and courage from your video because my day was actually quite crappy, so this cheered me up and made me feel like the world doesn't suck entirely after all.
I can barely imagine showering in what sounds like an incredibly open display setting with a whole room of other people, not to mention being trans and doing it. I am blown away by how brave you are. Check courage off your 2012 resolutions list!
@Thnx4AnnouncingThat Thank you! Actually, I used to be very uncomfortable with public showers as a kid as well, way before I came out as trans. It's odd how, now that my body is actually more conspicuous and less normative, I've become more okay with them.
I'm pretty much in awe of you right now. Gyms intimidate me slightly even fully clothed. Despite, and partly because of the irony of it, I have to say; You've got serious balls to have done that!
@TheHighlandSnail Hahaha, thanks. Gyms used to intimidate me too, but I've been going to this one for a while now and I feel much more comfortable there. I wouldn't have done this in a gym I don't know.
