  • I have a Cannon T3. I shoot RAW. I shoot manual. In auto the camera has many more stops. My ISO goes 100,400,800,1600,3200. On Auto the stops are divided into fractions of stops. Can I do this in manual, or am I missing something? Thanks!

  • why do you have so much stuff on your desktop?

  • I'd like a book Jared! :)

  • your vids are amazing to watch. It really describes from a neutral point-of-view, as in not being biased in any way. Lots of content, yet put in a simple manner. Just an idea, maybe if you could make an outdoor portrait tutorials where the sky would be exposed properly with the subject (using off-camera flash perhaps?), it would be awesome other thing to learn for myself as an amateur slr owner.

  • FRO does know photo

  • Yeah! I would love to.

  • Thanks for these videos! I would love a book please!

  • Yes I want a book, I have a point and shoot nikon crap pix, I'm sure once I get my d3100 I'll figure it all out better, but I'd like to get an idea of how this all works for now.

  • I'll take a book! Love the vids dude

  • BOOOOOK1!!!!!!!!!

  • Good Video I am learning a lot can't wait for the book

  • i would love to have the book. c:

  • Love the video Jared...I have a Nikon D7000 ... you are the most helpful to me so far... I am just started a photography course and my tutor told me to get to know my camera and what it does before I proceed, i got shutter speeds and iso down but aperture can get a bit tricky... i got a 55 to 300mm nikon lens and an 18 to 55mm lens....that is the basis for any good picture is aperture, iso and shutter speed i know but the he told me to read the manual ughhh... its so boring to do the manual....

  • good vid

  • I just bought a D7000 and discovered this guy at the same time! Couldn't have been better timing.

  • I learned more in 3 videos than I have from any book! Definitely my favorite Photographer.I would love to have this guy's book!

  • @Patsipad id love to get this book done for you asap, im workingo n it.

  • @Patsipad Yep great videos!

  • Can you make a video on how to use the metering on the Nikon??

  • I wish I would have watched your videos before I took a class. I would like the book please.

  • I would like that book :D

  • Love your videos! They have really helped me understand how to use my D7000.

  • i would love a book please

  • numex106, it's all about experimenting with different iso, apriture, shutter speeds to get the effect you want. Look at his vid before this one and you'll see the difference in the pics as he changes some of the settings from auto. This way you can get the pic just right or go for the affect you want. I liked the pic Jared shot when there was finally no glare from the sun coming through the window. Thanks for the info Jarid, Awesome!.

  • all your videos have really helped me improve my knowledge in photography. Thanks you. and a book you say? how do we get a hold of one?

  • I would love to have a book...

  • I'd like to have a book. I still need to sink every single information and the book would be nice :D. Thanks :]

  • ebook please

  • nice i would like it..

  • A book please!!! x)

  • A book would be nice :)

  • i change aperture from lowest, in my first shot, and highest in my second (same exposure) But I do not see any change in the brighness of the picture. hmm..? :O

  • This is really interesting. I wouldn't mind getting a book please : D

  • Alright whats the deal on the book Fro can I have one really ? I just go a Nikon D3100 and am new to this. I'm trying to learn from your videos but your to fast and I have alot of questions so a book would be great thanks.

  • Hi, could I also have a book please

  • I would like a book.

Im a beginner and i have a hard time figuring the settings.

    Thanks

  • me too! thanks for these vids, they are so helpful!! i never even knew about shooting raw, but i def do it now!!

  • Haha, like other commenters have said: I'm late to the party but would LOVE a book of exposure from you :)

  • Hey Jared,

I'm pretty new to the world of photography, but I would love a book to better understand how exposure, shutter speed, etc.. effect my images.

    Adrian

  • @adrian2104 I 2nd that.

  • YEA!! I'm probably super late but I want a book!!! lol PLEASE :D

  • i really like the way you explain and how open you are to share what you know!!! thumbs up!!! =D

  • shutter speed and app are still foggy to this noobie. Shooting auto to get a starting point then adjusting in manual to desired look makes learning how to compensate less daunting and that much more fun. Thanks so much.

  • Wow, this was really helpful.

    Thanks Fro.

  • yes ! we WOULD LIKE a book !

  • dude u talk way too much....its hard to watch d entire video...its good info but a little annoying!!

  • hey how about that book?

  • I almost always shoot aperture priority. I almost always shoot wide open, so it makes little sense to me to set my lens to whatever the largest setting is, 2.5 most of the time. And then i would set my shutter speed to whatever. if i can shoot at 1/60th, at a smaller aperture.

Like for the other day i was shooting a 200iso FILM!!! camera, wide open, on aperture priority, and it was so bright out, i was shooting 1/1000 1/500, on F22. On M it would have been the same A-S combo!

  • great video jarod!flawless!

  • Dude, you are spot on. I am a beginner is DSLR cameras. Call me a Chimper, Chumper, Chummer or whatever. I take a lot of digital photos to learn. (DIGITAL, I CAN TRASH, HELLOOOOOO!) I spend a lot of time at my computer after I have imported a bunch of photos and I look at the F, ISO and shutter speed and I look at the results on the screen. I start seeing patterns in what I am looking for and these measurements. Not everybody wants to have a blown out background. I could write more but no space

  • Comment removed

  • why is it a bad idea to look at the back of the screen? everything i thought i knew. just got flushed down the toilet

  • I've learned new tweaks on my d3100 thanks to your show. You are an awesome tutor. That book would be of great help.

  • i have a bad habit of checking my LCD after most shots. i need to discipline myself

and tern off the image preview on the camera.

  • @HIRExUP yea, i have image preview off.

  • I went full manual at a baseball game for the first time. thanks for the tips and inspiration. My jpegs turned out ok because i was a little over exposed in several pictures, but overall, they turned out much better than that did in shutter priority (which is what ive been using to shoot). thanks again!

  • LOVE your clips! learn a lot off them. Would like to receive a full book on understanding exposure. Thank you!

  • Yes, a full book would be just great!

  • Yes a book on this would be nice! PDF or online, or what ever format would allow it to be on my I Pad. That would be great!

  • i would like a book on exposure composition thank you ^^

  • A priority FTW :D

  • Yes, pls I would like a full book on exposure. Thanx I lurn a lot from you!!

  • Id love a full book on understanding exposure. :) Thank you.

Would also like if you could do a video. Run throught what your doing what your camera is metering, what your settings are and how you change them. where your focusing and what metering mode. Step by step, dont leave any thing out. Then take differents pictures in different situations and do the run through for them. Love your video's. And love the orange T's. P.S I Shot Raw always. :)

  • When i look at my screen, im looking for blown out highlights.

  • A full book on this would be nice

  • Yes, would like a full book on it!

  • Could you please go over white balance, auto versus cloudy and the like.

    Thank you

  • M in fo da book..love watchin ur shows...gr8 work

  • chimping

  • A book would be nice.

If the light changes and you change your aperture won't that effect the amount of what's in focus?

  • A book would be nice.

If the light changes and you change your aperture won't that effect the amount of what's in focus?

  • please write a book about exposure :) !

  • A book would be really helpful, please.

  • YES I WANT A BOOK PLEASE JARED

  • a book would b great...

  • I look for my composition make sure its nice

  • Great explanation, Hard to find good explanations .

  • Jared, I'm just starting out and would love to have a book to understand more about exposure and my shutter speeds.

  • i already knew that but thanks anyway, i enjoy your videos so much and i learn so much english. it's great

  • If you did a search on google you can find out how shutter speed, iso, and f-stop effect your image. Shouldnt this be the first thing people learn anyway?

  • I learn many good things from you thank you so mutch Jared :D!

  • a book would be awesome! what lens is that?

  • i still don't get something fundamental what's the point of changing all the exposure setting if the meter is going to change the image? does the meter like change specific parts of the image or something?

  • @numex106 the meter is just reading light but in manual it doesnt change your picture.

  • Thanks for sharing. Really usefull for newbees....

I would like to get the book=)

  • Thanks man!! More full manual tutorials please for us newbees..

Looking forward to your next vids. Maybe you can film on location for examples and stuff? That would be the awesomest :)

  • Thx a lot for this help!

Can't wait for the future videos, when you are going to explain the triangle (as you called it)!

For me, this is the perfect timing! I'm just begun dealing with manual mode.

  • A book would be great!

Thanks for the continuing hard work.

  • Great information for a newbie. Thanks for sharing.

  • could you review the 7d please with a 24-70mm 2.8 l

  • i like the video and also would like to get the book

  • hey, i'm going to buy dslr camera and i am choosing beetwen 600d and d90 , wich 'd you prefer ?

  • Yes to the book idea its always good to read up on these things

  • When I use aperture priority, my photos generally come out similar, but quite often a few shots of the same thing are under exposed or over exposed. If I had shot in manual, then all my photos would have been consistent saving alot of time in post processing. I use a 5D original and the screen isn't very good as it is about 5 years old so the histogram actually can be beneficial along with the meter to check everything is okay.

  • is that the D3x or D3s ?

  • @shepr2k0 D3s

  • @russellskates soo the d7000 is shooting you right?

  • @shepr2k0 ? um... no....

  • @russellskates i thought the d7000 is whooting you cuz ur holding you d3s and the orange shirt looks funny. lol

  • @shepr2k0 um... im not the fro.....

  • @russellskates oh damn. i didnt' saw the username LOLOLOL

  • book would be great jared

  • yea do the book as an ebook for digi download or on kindle!

  • bro what your doing is greatness!... btw i would rly appreciate a book on that!

  • i going to buy a new dslr, in fact, my first dslr this kind of recommendations make me feel more excited about the power of manual mode

  • Book plsh

  • I want a book!

  • Yes Jared, PLEASE make a full book on understanding everything! That would be great, PLEASE PLEASE, thank you! :]

  • Yes, I would like a book. Btw, great vids bro. I'm learning as we speak.

  • you saveddddd my friggin SOULLL

    hahahahahahahhahahaha

  • YES FOR BOOK

  • HDR...... :)

  • I don't understand the problem with 'chimping' - back in the day of film, I would have given anything to be able to see what my pictures were going to look like.

  • yer, i would like to won a book like that Jared, by the way, that is quite the formidable fro

  • I should leave a note, maybe just to show n' say that i'm following along a lot of these clips. Just got a D7000 and getting back to shooting again. With that said, I sold my F4 about 3 years ago and been without a slr since. So thanks for some great advice Jared, if not the shooting then the gear ;) Bless

  • Im all for videos Jared

  • Jared I really need your help!

i just got into photography and i bought a nikon d3100. i am now looking for some new glass.

i tried following your advice and looking for the 35mm 1.8 but its sold out literally EVERYWHERE!

i dont want to buy it for 300+ when its really only 200.

can you please recommend another lens that is similiar and low cost or that is better to use than the kit lens?

    thanks.

  • @hahatrainwr3ck Im not Jared but I can give you advice, take them or dont. Tamron 17-50 2.8. is a decent lens to start with, better than the 18-55 and better than the 18-70 3,5 but a bit more pricy 459$ at B&H, you have the Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 who's even better at 499$ at B&H. Or you could buy the 50mm 1,8D for about 150$ but then you'll have to use manuel focus because you dont have a built in motor in your entry body dslr camera like the D90 etc. You can check some result on pixelpeeper.

  • @Tortuga699 thanks alot i appreciate it. i wanted to try the 1.8 50mm but wasn't sure about the manual focusing part. i guess i can get it from bestbuy and try it out for 14 days and return it if i'm not satisfied.

  • @hahatrainwr3ck For the incredible low price and the big bang you get from this lens, you should simply keep it.. If you ever decide to move for a more advance dslr, the autofocus will work. I think the hardest part will be to focus at the widest aperture since the DOF (depth of field) will be very small at close range, it's easy to miss but with practice you should be ok. If you're not familiar with DOF & hyperfocal check out DOFmaster or google depth of field calculator. Have a nice day.

  • i would love a book

  • Right now I'm learning completely opposite. I'm actually trying to get used to automatic shooting. In my film class, all I have to take pictures with is a fully manual Canon AE-1. I just got my first DSLR and I first started shooting in Manual because I didn't like the automatic, but now I'm slowing working my way into automatic.

  • E-BOOK!

  • I would like a book, haha :D!

  • Jared! One of the biggest advantages of shooting RAW is that you don't have to worry about all this minute little exposure problems. Just set the Aperture priority to what you want for the depth of field you want, and the ISO until it gives the shutter speed you want. Then, shoot away! If you exposure is off a little in a few shots, you can fix it how you like in post! THIS IS RAW AT WORK!

  • i always watch your video even if they dont pertain to me.. :D

  • BOOK!

  • Maybe not a full book, but a long ass video would not be bad.

  • ok so i am a total newb at DSLR's and i just started to pay attention to the meter and my pics come out sooooo much better!! before i saw this vid, i would just put in random setting in M mode and try to find the best combo which would mean more time which would prob cause me to miss the shot in the field. many spanks for making me read the meter

  • Quit confusing huh! Im confused myself lol. Sry for my English, as you can see it is not my primary language xD. You guy should realy take a look at those chart, priceless.

  • then you will have to cranck up your shutter speed of 3 step (wait that mean if I dont touch my speed I will end up having 3 times more light than I have now, which will might result in a white picture), because from f11 to f4 there is 3 step (like from f4 to f8 there is 2 step) so now we have 1/250 shutter we will divide it by 2, 3 time so we'll end up with 1/2000 for f4 at iso 100 and we should have the same exposre that we had with f11 1/250 at iso 100 on the hystogram screen.

  • Im Trying to learn the EV chart or the exposure value, there is one on wikipedia and another one on the pentaxforums (french language). f1 f1,4 f2, f2.8, f4, f5.6, f8, f11, f16, f22, f32, f45, f64 should be the referance in aperture & everything else in between are just weird aperture. So if we have the correct exposure at f11 iso 100 with a 1/250 in a suny day xD and you want the same exposure but with a wider aperture for a little creativity, let say you want f4

  • Comment removed

  • what about ev correction when the light meter going "wild"

  • i would like to have a book :)

  • Thanks for the helpful tips!!

  • hey jared, how would you expose for something that is very bright such as the sky and the subject. Sometimes when i take pictures of a subject the background is blown out and the subject is correctly exposed, but i want the subject and the background exposed. how would i go about doing that?

  • @no0dzzz Illuminate your subject with some off camera flash. Use flash settings to properly expose your subject and set your camera up to properly expose for the background.

  • @no0dzzz Oh yeah, another technique is to use HDR, but that doesn't always look natural...and Jared will probably ban you for doing that!

  • How to?

    Buy a leica M9.

  • book would be nice fro

  • Great explanation! Thanks Jared!

  • i would also like to have a book

  • I leave my comment here as I want the book . . . =]

  • i would like a book, i just started out in photography with my canon 60D
