@North49Canuck Sittler was a better Captain than Sundin. Clark, Gilmour and Sittler all had habits of rising to the occasion in clutch times. Sundin never really did that. He was a steady goal scorer but was never the leader than the other 3 were.
Doug Gilmour: Drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the seventh round of the 1982 draft. Gilmour was implicated in a nasty civil suit involving sexual misconduct and a thirteen-year-old babysitter. He was quickly traded away to the Calgary Flames in 1988.
He was more or less traded to take the public heat off St. Louis and improve the team's public image. A shameful hurdle that Gilmour never get over. He apparently paid the childs family $1 million in an out of court settlement.
The Leafs honor there jersey numbers because otherwise we'd be like the NY Yankees and have 2 numbers in single digits soon to be 1 once Derek Jeter retires available for players to wear. Even Montreal has a lot of numbers retired, it just doesn't make sense in the long run.
i was there that night, and i sat behind the net. it's hard to see but my dad was with me and was wearing a freaken bright yellow jacket. lol need to find good footage where it actually catches us cause other than the stubs nobody believes i was there
Gilmours not the best hands down Leaf. He's amazing, top 10 maybe top 5. He only had like 2 or 3 good seasons. Remember we traded him cause he wasn't worth 3 million a year? How is a player like that the best Leaf ever?
They don't. Very few players completely drain themselves in every game the way they used to back before the first lockout. Seriously, watch a game from any point before '95 and then watch one now. The style dramatically changed, and the jury is still out on whether or not it's for the better.
haha "the kind of hockey they don't play anymore" how sad is it that they have to revel in a time when they made it all the way to the semi-finals...poor Leafs fans. Gilmour was a good one, though.
God that announcer for the ACC "tries" to sound cool, but it actually annoying... the nest Maple Leafs announcer was the one during the 90's at Maple Leaf Gardens
i was just at the acc and i can tell you that its only numbers 4 and 5 that are retired, or 5 and 6, and of course #99s retired throughout the way it should be.
Dummy - First off all, he had his number HONOURED...not retired.
Second of all, he had 452 points in 392 regular season games . If he was with the Leafs for a longer time, there is no doubt that he would be sitting top 5 in all-time points.
Third of all, he had 76 points in 52 playoff games played.
Lastly, if this is a video about white "trashville", why did you take the time to search for it and watch it?
hate to be the one to point this out, but the number isn't retired, only honoured. Tornoto generally doesn't retire numbers. the only numbers that have been retired are players who died while still members of the team: Ace Bailey (6) and Bill Barilko (5)
I hate the voice of that new Maple Leafs announcer at the ACC, the guy they had at Maple Leaf Gardens was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better. Its as though he tries to hard to be unique...
I had the honour to play with him this weekend and he is such a classy, nice guy. I was star struck, hope to see you again sometime and hope to see you coach in the NHL one day.
For 2 years, that statement is valid. However, I don't think Gilmour was here long enough to make that statement. Gotta go with Keon, Sittler or Sundin over Dougie, as much as I like Dougie.
@louch5 Damn right, no player had the intensity and impact on the ice like Gilmour. No player affected and resurrected the Leaf more than Gilmour. If they didn't have that penalty in game 6 they would have beat LA in 93 and won the cup because they had Montreals number.

Ah, Dirtbag Dougie.
Do any of you guys know why this reprobate was hastily traded from St. Louis to Calgary? (Hint: it involves allegations of impropriety with his 13-year-old babysitter.)
The 92-93 Leafs are the team we need our current Leafs to model themselves after. Put Dougie alongside Ron Wilson and we would see a better team. Those were the days! Gilmour,Clark,Potvin,! Honor that lineup before every game to energize our Leafs!
Sundin was a pussy, Clark and Dougie were all heart!
