  • Short Stuff used to come to a bar I hung out at in the 70's and 80's in Harvey ILL called Just Angels. Used to see them whenever they would come down. What a great band. Jimmy was one of the best harp players and showmen that I ever saw. Did a great version of Wooly Bully. I still have a copy of their Talk is Cheap LP on vinyl.

  • Great!!!

  • @dannyboyvlc i lived a couple of blocks over / just angels was on halstead and i loved them also

  • Jim & Junior. It doesn't get any better.

  • Hello Matt,

I met your Dad and actually sang with him many many moons ago, at Teddy's on Farwell. He and Jr. were just the best!!!.... and still are!!!! ... My husband and I bought a Wurlitzer juke box, and I want you to know I have two original 45's "Talk is Cheap", it is A 1 on our box, I still have the receipt from 1812 Overture..I paid 69 cents each for the 45's.. We play it almost every day! My husband still thinks I yacky yacky all the time....Oh no!! Love to you and Jim,

  • Hey Matt, I just talked to your dad today about doing a gig or two with us in Chicago in September. I'll have to torment him about this one...lol

  • Excellent. LOVE IT. Short Stuff was GREAT and ANYTHING Junior does is tops. Gary Lane

  • WOW!!! Thanx for posting this!!! I used to see/hear them on Milwaukee's East Side back in the days/nites. Awesome to see this vintage footage. Would be great to see more.

  • Matt, I'm Margo and worked at Hunter Agency/McManagement for/with Mike Short during the early 80's. "Back in the day". If you see this, please have him get in toucvh with me. I "think" there is an address here to send a message? "Hi Jim! So now you're a legend, huh?!!" Glad you're still playing. XIO

  • Matt, I'd absolutely love for you to post some of his stuff off their album in 1977. Coda kid, Kenny Arnold's drunk song, Disco Kid, Junior's I Made A Mistake. That album was and remains a gem. I've got it somewhere but no longer have a turntable and the cassette I made from it has since busted.

I saw your dad sooooo many gigs in Milwaukee, Waukesha and Madison it's silly. One of my alltime favorite nights remains seeing them at the ChurchKey in Madison in April or so 1977. Awesome gig.

  • @bendbadgersteve I believe Jim wrote I Made A Mistake,Did Jr. sing it on that album?Nice hearing from you Matt,(Ive got the Blues for Shut Ins CD,)Love it! ,nice to have the JL Blues combo on record that had Perry Weber and Dave Kasick. With any luck i'll be seeing your Dad during my annual visit to Chicago and Milwaukee in August/ September.

  • Matt - Please keep posting this stuff. Shocked to see McKenty and Danny Shmitt. Love it! Jason

  • Hi Matt

Thanks for the response. I used to watch your dad and his band play in Green Bay and surrounding areas back in the 70's and 80's. He has always been my favorite harp player. It's nice to see memories on video! I have a copy of the Short Stuff album and still listen to it often.

  • Cool! Thanks a lot! Jim Liban is the on of the most influencers in harmonica playing for me! I have a vinyl copy of "short stuff" album but I think it must be reissued on cd!

  • Where the heck did this come from??? I loved Short Stuff but don't remember this song. It's still great!

  • @dinodgr I'm Jim Liban's son, Matt- He's slowly going through the stockpile of Short Stuff "stuff" and giving me a few gems! This was their "new wave" stuff! Dad has done a few different versions of Manic Recession and has recently added it to his list once again as a slow blues...

  • @asti247 Jim Liban is one of the most overlooked harp players from any generation...

  • @DennisGruenling I certainly agree Dennis,(Id also add the late, great Mark Sallings to that list.) I saw Jim many times in MKE during the 70s. the best memories are from Teddy's (now Shank Hall).where Short Stuff played often at the time when Howlin Wolf,Hound Dog Taylor,Willie Dixon(with Carey Bell),and the great James Cotton graced the stage.I prefer the stuff they were doing at that time(such as Talk is Cheap,Stop on By) to this VDO, but Jim's playing is always great.
